It is surprising how tunes of the past stir up nostalgia. When the first tune came out
I was supervising a contract in Guyana and returned here in the October of 1971.
My next contract was at Pencader, some twelve miles north of Carmarthen and one of
my colleagues invited me to be godfather at his sons Christening so I felt justified in
    giving some memorable presents.
I selected a music box which played 'Raindrops keep ....' and a small tool kit for the boy.
I was staying at the Blossom Lodge pub at New Inn which was nearby - now closed
and derelict. The profuse playing of the wind-up box , and the removal of his doorknobs
produced lavish and grateful thanks which could be heard the other side of the Rhondda!

Hello Ian, I love your comment. You are quite correct, and believe it or not when we worked in Clubland, for over twenty years,
certain songs would have quite an effect on some members of the audience, recalling some event in the past, maybe a
Happy Occasion or a Sad one there were folks who just couldn't hold back the tears.
Certain pieces of music and songs do bring back memories for members of an audience and both in Clubland performances
and Organ Shows I have noticed people leave the room and then come and apologise and explain themselves after the show.
Thank You for your always welcome and thoughtful comments, PAUL.

Thank You so much Robert. I have always been lucky. I had a good teacher on the church organ, 1961 to 1964. I left school 1964
and managed quite easily to get professional bookings no less that four days per week all year round. I didn't bother about holidays!
Around 1965 I was busy but found time for daytime lessons with Charles Smart at Lillian Eden's Acadamy of Music in Arden Road,
Finchley in London. Later I had lessons with Ena Baga, "The Queen of the Keybords" at Chiswick Hammond Organ Studios in London.
It is only in the last couple of years I haven't been able to do any concerts at the Music Palace in Ynyshir which I founded a few years ago with Ben Snowdon and Anthony Meads which we set up as a Registered Charity, which houses our collection of wonderful Theatre Pipe Organs, PAUL KIRNER'S MUSIC PALACE in South Street, Ynyshir, in the Welsh Rhondda Valley.
I live opposite the museum. Thanks for commenting Robert and hope the above is of interest. Best Wishes, PAUL.

@@ComptonLodgeStudios Very interesting Paul, thanks for replying. You are a true master of the instrument,im impressed. My Granny played church organ and harmonium but my parents didn't think of getting me piano /organ lessons sadly. It must have been good seeing a lot of the old cinemas before they started to be shut down and be demolished and working with the old organists like Charles Smart .I know Ena Baga or rather her unusual name has stuck in my mind.I would love to visit your Museum some day, what a treat to hear live. I've only been to the place in Norfiolk ( i forget the name) twice as i was on holiday nearby .I often play your channel, so relaxing and tuneful and atmospheric of past years.

I remember when "Rain drops falling on my head" was new. I can't say how many requests I got for that tune. I was playing on my then new Hammond B3. I bought an X-66 shortly after. I sometimes think of the money I spent on instruments that never paid for themselves in the long run. There was just not much money in salary and tips for playing in supper clubs. However; my Electone ELX-1 has more than paid for itself with the gigs I had since I bought the instrument used. I had it a the East Troy railroad museum where I played for the dinner train cocktail hour. We have a virtual organ there now and so my ELX-1 sits in the same room my Wurlitzer console sits. I sometimes wondered about keeping an expensive instrument out someplace. This is a long comment I know. Gary

So do I! I was working on average five to seven days a week, fifty-two weeks of the year, and you've got to keep up with the latest "Pop" numbers - Paul.

Question: How big is the room that the organ speaks into?

    • @ComptonLodgeStudios
      @ComptonLodgeStudios  2 роки тому +7

There was seating for 60 in proper tip-up Cinema Seats ex-Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton
courtesy of the late Steve Tovey, Wolverhampton Civic Hall Organist.
There was seating in the "Reginald Dixon Bar" for another 15 or so.
Thanks for your interest. All the Best, PAUL.

@@ComptonLodgeStudios The reason I asked was I noticed a bit of reverberation. I was not sure if the reverb was added in the recording or if it was natural. My Wurlitzer speaks into a much smaller room but the local organists really like to play it.

@@HD7100 Yes! There was a reverb/echo unit which helped make the organ sound as if it was in a larger hall.
A Wem CopyCat tape unit which pretty well all vocal artistes had in the United Kingdom - Jolly Good Sound for about £75.
The recording studios where we recorded our Long Play Records was SRT, who had some terrific Reverb/Echo gear -
they could even make one voice sound like a choir! They used about twenty recording tracks for Hammond & Leslie,
Drums and Vocal. Very hard work - We completed the recording in one day, stayed over night, and did the re-mixig
on the second day. Bloody Hard Work!
Our fans loved the albums of both the Trio and my Solo Electronic and Pipe Organ.
My solo work was all on Cassettes to start with, then of course CD's.
      Thanks for commenting, PAUL.
