The Wayward Sailors Ep 9: Yacht work fixing our rusty steel hull

- After we sailed Cape Petrel back from the Abrolhos Islands we knew we had to get her out of the water ASAP because there were a few rusty parts of the hull needing attention. Little did we know how rusted she was, or how lucky we had been not to scrape some reef and sink! Some of the hull was held together by rust and paint! We enlist some mates and get busy on the 5-inch grinders, using 1mm cutting disks to cut out the rusted parts of the yacht hull to be re-sheeted. The 2 major problem spots were under the aft head/ bathroom, where condensation had caused major rust, and on the port side near the exhaust (the temperature changes must have exacerbated the rust). In classic wayward style we started cutting holes the complete wrong way because we no idea of how to do it properly, and ended up having to re-do everything the right way! Thanks to all the helping hands who put in time cutting, grinding and welding and who pointed us in the right direction (eventually).

Why dose eveyone take guards off grinders. They are there for a good reason and u can still work the grinder perfectly with them on. If that grinder kicks back or slips your hand is going straight in that blade.

Yeh we know, Phil, with boat work there is a lot of tricky angles and quite often you just can't get a grinder in with the guard on, aside from that we try to be as safe as possible!

The big worry about banging a big hole in the hull is not just the leaking but also the fish entering thru the hole and stealing the cats food.

This is brilliant guys! You have cut out rather small pieces and replaced them. I have a hull of a small 100 year old ship to fix in a similar way. Using smaller patches will avoid having to bend the plates , as my hull is even more rounded! Would love to get in touch… and hear how it all lasted. Seems a better method the double plating!
