    Fun Facts of Life facts - Jenny O’Hara grew up in Warren and Charlotte Rae passed away in 2018 - the year the Warren Mall officially closed. Growing up in the 80s, my dad was a mailman and the mall was on his route. Seeing the mailboxes made me particularly nostalgic.

    Ace, quite interesting. I watched the other vid of this mall when you got inside prior to it going away. I go way back, I was the district manager of the Kay Bee Toy store in this mall as well as the Chautauqua Mall in 1980. Both of these malls were pretty slow back then from my perspective. I grew up in Rochester, got sent to Buffalo by Kay Bee, opened the store in Thruway Mall, same for Eastern Hills, the promoted and sent to Jamestown. Only spent 1 year there but do remember these 2 malls. Sad to see them gone, though surprised and glad they lasted as long as they did. Watching a lot of your other vids too. Good job and thanks for doing these!

    Such good memories from that mall. Ponderosa, KB Toys, Aladdin's Castle. This was a trip down memory lane. I moved away in 2013 and while I do go back to visit every 3-4 years, I miss it greatly. The area was hit with such economic disaster that it is so hard to find a decent job and make a living there.

    I too was there in 2018. I think it might have been July. Walking through the mall while they were demolishing part of it was scary because it seemed like nobody would be accountable if a ceiling fell through! I went to the Bon Ton and scored myself an awesome rain jacket, a pair of sturdy hiking shoes I still wear today, and some airtight containers that I use today, too. But I felt like I was part of the problem. Warren hadn't been able to pay full price for goods at Bon Ton for quite some time. My favorite thing I saw walking through the front doors, when you took a right into the first hallway there was a store that was closed and mostly empty. But in the front windows there was one of those "Warren Bears" (like the one at the Visitor center) posed as if he was leaning into a big garbage can. Whether he was supposed to be digging for food or hurling into it, I took a picture of it. There were also fixtures all over the place that I tried to arrange for donation to the Senior Center, that they could have had for free, but nobody was willing to go there and take the items. Our sense of re-use is broken. The fixtures were stamped "Made In America" but nobody wanted to spend 1 dollar for gas to pick them up. Guess they would rather buy new crap, from China.

    Westland Mall in Westland MI is currently a dying mall that I expect to be closed in the upcoming years. Macy's closed their doors a few years ago and Sears is closed now as well; JCP may be next. There's also an old wing thats walled off now where an old Burger King still stands.

    • @joeybuddy6
      @joeybuddy6 3 роки тому +1

      I ran a store in that mall for 6 years and left *right* before Macy's closed. Last time I was there I thought Sears was still open, but that was probably June or July last year.
      My question is... what walled off wing are you talking about with a burger King? Lol

    • @RandomTechWZ
      @RandomTechWZ 3 роки тому

      @@joeybuddy6 Its near the JCPennys. If you're looking at Pennys from the mall, to the right is a white wall with double doors. Behind those doors is the BK! My dad used to take me there back in the early 90s.
      If you drive around the parking lot, in between sears and Pennys, you'll see a little paved area, you can actually see the old BK windows from there.

    Well done. Found your channel from Sal's channel. Just came 1st time today after his livestream. This mall reminds me a bit of a mall I went to in my early teens. It's not completely dead but half the area that it used to have, much of it demolished n replaced by external buildings (offices, dr's offices etc.) with both anchors cut off from the mall which was pretty stupid considering the grocery store entrance is still just 10 feet away from the new entrance.

  • @jeremyud
    @jeremyud 4 роки тому +1

    I consider this the bizzaro world version of Indiana Mall. Still a dead mall, but they somehow managed to keep on to all 4 anchors until 2015. It's also used as a community space pretty often.

    You do a good job with these videos. I don't think many malls will survive this with only 15% of retailers paying rent. One of my busy malls reopened this week and I went in. Dicks was the only anchor open along with just a handful of inline stores. Just about everything else was closed. Nothing open in the food court though Aunt Annies was selling pretzels. Lenscrafters was open but Vision works was closed. That is a sad damn situation.

    Kinda reminds me of what is left of my local childhood mall turned shopping center (wal mart, lowes, tractor supply, burlington,planet fitness). The Riverside Mall (now Riverside Center) in Utica N.Y.
    Now I believe just the old mall offices and the backroom of a Bradlees actually still remain. Some more of it remained back in 2009 and I was lucky enough to get in there while they were building the Burlington. The old storefronts remaining then were Electronics boutique, Lane Bryant, Friendly's, Regis hair, Barbara moss and the backroom of Bradlees.
    If you're ever bored Ace do some googling of "Riverside Mall Utica NY" there's a ton of pictures and stories out there. It was a great mall.

    End of an era. I remember back in the 1980’s this was the place to hang out on Friday nights.... cruise the mall halls... Pink Flamingo downtown too... hahaha
    Aladdin’s arcade was a frequent stop. Pizza at Napoli’s.... KB Toys was where we bought Transformers and Nintendo games as a kid. Big G’s was a sportsman’s shop before The Jock Shop moved in next to JC Penny’s....
    K-Mart with the “blue light” specials.
    I remember KITT the car from Knight Rider and the A-Team van made their way through this mall back in the 80’s. Sitting on Santa’s lap in front the the Bon Ton when we were little twerps....

      Sometimes there is a theory that a replacement of something different will bring people to a place. Example would be the town i work in the UK used to have a bustling mall but the town has had a reputation and part of the mall is dead (doubtful if i will be able to explore). What happened is they built a new complex up the top of town with food store, restaurants and shopping centre, gave free parking but then charged down the bottom of town. So new complex was busy, most of town now dead, and even new complex suffered over the years. Now the town has nothing except a few ok shops and worse with current situation. But it used to be the army home town, and that carries pride amongst some people

    The Chair in that Mall Office was FILTHY!!! OMG, I believe that was the source of the odour. I could smell it through my monitor. The loss of 7,000 is a big impact on a very rural location, so I can see why it was doomed.
    I liked the light fixtures (Sal would probably agree with me on this). There’s something about that smoky glass light fixtures that never goes out of style. With this still in flux are there any locations that remained for the area? I realise that the area has far too many malls and strip malls that are now vacant, but I hate to see when instead of some healthy competition you can see where it can doom all of the shopping malls because they’re just trying to slice up the money pie, leaving every retail venue dying because they can’t receive a large enough chunk of the regions relatively limited and declining income. It makes me hope that their downtown area is seeing a Renaissance of some decent shops to return the charm around the towns and cities of the area. It’s a vicious cycle. A Mall (or Malls) are built, closing up the CBDs (Central Business Districts) of these quaint towns and cities, and now hopefully there are some places that still have the structures in the CBDs to create a revival in its interest. It would be great to see that happen!
    I really like that camera! What make and model was that? It was a definite improvement in quality, and it could be mistaken by the novice for a torch. I’m so very glad that you are doing these Cabin Fever getaways. And for dessert? The Facts of Life! I believe most of the actors ended up in rather rough circumstances. Yikes! I forgot just how popular Mauve was in. May that colour never be used again! Are you able to cross over to Ontario? This looks great, Ace

The story of each mall going with the video is what makes each one different and unique in some way even though they all end up with pretty much the same fate at the end. You take the time to research your info and give accurate info which makes it part of history. From what I am noticing from your videos most of these malls seem to have been built from the mid 1960's to late 1980's. It's very interesting for sure. Thank you
