Thank you for having the humility to show your mistake for the world to see. This way, hundreds could learn from that mistake instead of having to make their own to learn the lesson!

Living to talk about it is always a great plus.

I am amazed your boat wasn't a write off! I think I'll be looking for a plastic one as my first proper sea kayak!

Nope, no need to sell. It was all fixed within 2 and a half weeks for $500. See other vid. I swam out of the rocks, using a scissor kick and my paddle. The guys then toggle towed me out a little further to do the rescue. Thanks.

This reminds me of the old cartoon:
Beginning paddler: I hope somebody sees me if I capsize.
Advanced paddler: If I capsize, I hope nobody sees.

Thanks for the comments, I like the camera on the helmet as I have better control and I can point it towards things I want to film. I leant into the wave as per being in the surf, I did this deliberately to let the boat take the hit. I guess I was a little arrogant because I failed to show respect to the ocean, in that I knew it was not ideal for rock hopping.

Thanks damionmtb, capturing the footage was the one plus from the incident. I was lucky from a personal injury point of view. I did hurt my elbow a little but it seems ok now. It could have been much worse.

Yep I love my Nordkapp, although there are still some gel coat cracks she still looks and feels great.

Good video!! I will keep an eye on the used marked to not offer for a yellow nordkapp on sale!!! :-)
Not clear in the vid how did you get out of the rocks, did you swim or they threw a rope?
Gladd you made it out in mostly 1 piece!!

I think I'll stick to my surf launches rather than take on the rocks, thanks for sharing the footage and glad to hear you're okay!

a plastic boat would have had scratches. composite boats just lack the impact resistance required for rough boating.

Ha ha - typical Aussie understatement: ''Lil' bit of arrogance, you're down one Nordkapp'...

Rockhopping--->Rocksmashing :)) Sorry about the damage. Learning by doing. Happened to me in my NDK. At least you get some experience in kayak repair. Denzotape rules on the water.

Sorry about the damage on the boat and it seems that your body sustained none (?)
Great skills (evasive action before impact) and all capture on camera! Cool.

Happens eventually to everyone who goes in the rocks... Why I paddle the plastic boat in the mix ;-)
You may know this, but Reed sells an excellent paddle holder for keeping your splits in place while you're getting pummeled. Nothing like swimming with the boat when it's nasty, and having your splits slide out.
    Cheers.

    Ever consider the Nordkapp RM?

The area you took out from didn't seem too risky.. I think your timing was out. As others have indicated, plastic is more suited to being knocked around by rocks. If your into these sort of challenging entries, investing in a second plastic is a good option to risking further damage to your nice rigid and responsive ocean going fiberglass K. I have an Aussie made "Lattitude" SOT with a very low COG which is great for this type of thing. All the best and enjoyed your clip. Hazza

Thanks TJoKayaking, a little bit of instinct kicked in and a lent into the wave which meant my hull took the main impact instead of me.

Pardon my cynicism, but the area you were paddling through looked as if you were asking for trouble, large rocks with 3 to 5 foot swells crossing them!!! I have never taken my kayak on to the ocean yet, but being a native Minnesotan and paddling Lake superior for years, I respect rocks and waves. Superiors waves a much closer together and the basalt shoreline and outcroppings make for some treacherous conditions, so I stay clear, besides lake superior has an average of 38 degree F water temp. capsizing is incredibly dangerous here. Glad you weren't hurt! live and learn

pfeif55406 It's something that people do on purpose called rock gardening.

It's called rock gardening, and some people live for it. It's the sea kayaking equivalent of WW.

Great bit of footage though I would have preferred the camera mounted on the back of the kayak.
Still, I reckon you were lucky to hit it with the hull instead of your body. If it will do that much damage to a Nordkapp what would it have done to your body? I guess you might have instinctively leant the right way or was it just luck?
At the end of the video you say "a little bit of arrogance". What did you mean?
And those Aussie waters just make a pom like me green with envy.

Crazy stuff, take care, definitely need a helmet there. Yes an Ambit watch would withstand that kind of punishment :-)

You are a lucky man, I am refering for fitting your spraydeck, only in 4 steps:
    1. Fit back side
2/3. Fit one side and then the other.
    4. Stretch the front side and ... spraydeck totally placed.
Does your spraydeck seal all around that cockpit?
