  • In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Leonardo de Vinci was 40 years old when this happened. This must have been like the moon landing back in 1492 to discover a new land on earth. We went to the actual spot where these three ships disembarked on their discovery mission from the town of Palos de la Frontera where we also ate dinner. The ships are just replicas but very good ones. The is the 525th anniversary of their mission. The museum is very interesting with some of Christopher's diary to read. He describes the people he met on the islands of the Bahamas.

thank you, that was fun, I am from Boston and saw them when I was in 3rd grade. At that time they had a case with the dental Dr tools. I have a lot of respect for people at that time. Amazing to think 30ty something men to each ship. Mostly crew. Mad respect for people. We are so sheltered

It is awesome to go to the exact spot where Columbus sailed from. How much the world has changed since that expedition.

Those were actually small ships for the time. Not intented to be large. Just fast, exploration ones.

The replica Mayflower near me isn't much bigger and wouldn't want to sail it down Cape Cod Canal never mind across the ocean.

@@millstap I just noticed in Wikipedia that the actual size of the ship is no known and there are several replicas. The largest one is 100 feet long. That might not be as bad for a long trip but I still think it was madness.

@@ugaugauga488 Yes, the Santa Maria was the largest and the other two smaller. Just having enough healthy food and water to make it was a feat in itself because they didn’t know exactly how long it would take. Then when everyone panics, the mutiny ensues. Not for the faint of heart for sure.
