I've watched Dave's videos on Guadalcanal many times because I find them so interesting and educational. I'll watch a video, do some research or reading and come back to the videos again and again.
I had the honour of meeting Mitchell Paige back in around 2000 at Camp Pendleton for the 1st Division’s birthday. Even got a photo if he and I. I will cherish that meeting for all of my life….
i had the privilege to meet and talk with Col. Mitchell Paige several years ago. it was a meeting of the local boy scouts where he told the story of his life, including his childhood, enlistment and focusing on the details of battle at guadalcanal. a true american hero.
These are excellent tours that you are sharing. I am in the midst of reading James Jones' The Thin Red Line for the second time - having seen both movie versions. Although the story focuses on the Army actions against the fictitious Dancing Elephant in November - December 1942, your tours lend a better understanding of the island's topography and the challenges Marines and soldiers had to deal with driving the Japanese off the island by early 1943. Immense thanks to you for doing these.
It seems that men who perform the greatest acts of courage during war are humbled by their experience. Conversely it seems that the braggarts are those that did little in comparison.
@@guadalcanal-walkingabattle5349 I noticed you pointed that out, very cool. Amazing place, so much history and heroism. We appreciate you doing these videos
@@guadalcanal-walkingabattle5349 I have been reading about WW2 since I first read Guadalcanal Diary at the age of 14. Your videos have provided a context that brings to life the story of these famous battles. The battle for Guadalcanal and Savo Island sometimes get lost behind the subsequent battles and victories. You also provide a history of the Corps and weapons at this point in the war. These Marines and Army units took on the battle hardened Japanese Army using WW1 technology (and likely ammo). Truly a testament to training, tactics and the determination of individual Marines fighting together as a unit. Excellent videos and history lessons. Thank you.
I remember living on Kola Ridge as a child. I spent all my spare time collecting relics of the war. I recall finding a fox hole six skeletons not far from home this was 1968.
There are 2 Marines still missing from that fight and were buried on the field. I imagine those skeletons were Japanese? I imagine the place has changed a bit since you were there.
Thank you for your efforts in bringing us this video about Mitchell Paige. I have respected him above many others, including John Basilone who heard of Paige's experience and attributed some of his story to himself.
Mitchell paiges real name is mihajlo pejic im preety sure thats serbian not an anglo american name lol. he was proud of his serbian heritage also his parents weren't americans but serbs from hercegovina
Ok, I love the videos. Probably some of the most important battles not many Americans know about. Have to ask though. I hear an Australian accent slip out here and there. Is it just from living around there?
His description of the events is awesome! The video of, and description of, these heroic events is hard for me to grasp. It might be just me. However, I think it could be done much better. A key might be the analysis of American Civil War battlefields. Just a thought. Dude does a masterful job otherwise!!!!
Thanks for the feedback. I filmed it on an iPhone 7 including the editing on the phone. At the same time rocks were being thrown at me and my life threatened by a group of unruly gang youths. Lucky that anything was filmed at all.
@@guadalcanal-walkingabattle5349 OMG, dude! That's insane. Please be safe! But, on another note, and this goes way back to college anthropology days, OUR WAR wasn't necessarily THEIR WAR. Get me? IMHO, often times we(western "civilization") never spends much time with the effect of our madness on their cultures.. I'm sure that the average American has ZERO idea of what those people think, feel, believe,, love, hate, etc. THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DO!!!!!
This island...especially the most formidable battles ever fought on land, air or sea, should have been memorialized long ago, to a much greater degree. These people living on this island, are literally living on top of a mass grave site.
I lost all twelve. I lost all twelve. It's insanity up there. I told them what to do. I told them where to go, and I gave em a push. I don't know who's in charge I DON'T KNOW WHO'S IN CHARGE! @Jason Forbes Lol I was wondering how many people if any would pick up on that. Back in 2009 I was a new PFC in the Army 3ID 2BCT 1-64AR, and I used to make half of my platoon crack up by reciting those same lines. I've seen it so many times I can recite most of the lines.

Love you videos. I was a machine gunner with Weapons Co 2/7 from 05-09 and we still proudly carried on the legacy of Paige.

That man was from my hometown Charleroi PA we are all proud of that man he is a hero of our country 🙏🏼🇺🇸

Thanks and make sure you look at my Charles David MOH. That’s the area where Jones was WIA on the Galloping Horse (Dancing Elephant).
I had the honor of meeting Mitchell Paige. We had a cocktail party for him. What a gracious man. It was an honor.
In 1999, I got to spend an afternoon with him at his home in La Quinta, CA....he autographed my Mitchell Paige GI Joe!
Great video of a heroic Marine. Had the pleasure of spending time with Mitch. I have dome great memories and items to remember him by.
True American Hero Serbian Dude 🇷🇸 Mitch Paige = Mihajlo Pejic
Paige was born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. His parents were ethnic Serbs, immigrants from the Glina region, originally surnamed Pejić.
We met Mitch Paige at a 1st MarDiv 60 year anniversary celebration. He was very humble. Such a nice man.
It seems that men who perform the greatest acts of courage during war are humbled by their experience.
Conversely it seems that the braggarts are those that did little in comparison.
Was that the one at Pendleton? If so I remember him there too. Was an impressive tribute and touching ceremony that day
Outstanding, thank you for airing this.
An absolutely superhuman effort. It's difficult to try to comprehend the odds and sheer effort it took that night. SF.
Yet another terrific machine gun sergeant who knew what to do when the chips were down. Amazing.
Have to apologise for some reason I said 1945 instead of 1942. I think the kids throwing rocks at me was a bit of distraction!
Excellent video as always 👍 thank you sir
Great views over Ironbottom Sound toward the end.

There is an excellent interview done by Oliver North with Mitchell Paige on "war stories".

Could you give the location of the skeletons Tim? If Marines, they need to be recovered.
My father was awarded the Levion of Merit citation for his service as a Regimental Suveon at the battle of Guadalcanal

As usual, great. Hallowed ground, half a world away, and you do it justice.
Mitch was a great Serbian-American, brought up by his parents to be proud of his roots.
He was an AMERICAN. Just happened to have Serbian ancestors.

So no one is gonna talk about the dog @ 5:50 who looks like he’s in a foxhole?
Wow. Never saw that myself and even missed it when filming. How cool is that.

Eric Harmon I guess I picked it up from living 25 years there.
How can I get more information about my father's service in the battle of Guadal Canal?
I have a Facebook page with the same title as here. Send me a PM.
Thanks! Do you drive on the left on Guadalcanal?
Yes it’s a British commonwealth country.

Jesus... That photo at 5:07 is a horrible scene.
Psycho's Neighbor I’ve came to know since that’s it’s actually a movie scene. This photo is commonly shown to be real as I was lead to believe.
Completely destroyed the history of what that truly represents. Truly, a very sad ending.
1945? I don’t think so.
I must have had a brain slip in there. I think I corrected it?
