Well put.....this has to be among the dumbest cars on the road (for 99% of those who buy it).....I see quite a few of them in my neighborhood....most a driven by trophy wives who maxed out how much they could spend on Botox and plastic surgery so went with a 4x4 Chihuahua hauler to go the grocery store...

I was in the market for a capable vehicle that would satisfy my wants and needs. I considered this exact G63 however due to lack of third row seating I now drive a 2013 sienna.

G Class's never been offered with 3 row seats. If you want like this one and luxurious ( kinda they're not rivals) check the GLS or the X7...

This is a special edition (hence the edit) that has the all new Mercedes V-2 engine to replace the V-8. Because a V-2 is much more German than a V-8.

I was in the market for a off road capable luxury SUV, and was considering this G Wagon. But with my growing family, I went with a 99 Toyota Land Cruiser instead as it has a 3rd row seat.
I have a hunch the reason they aren’t really advertising it too much is they don’t want people buying it for clout they want people who will actually use it for it’s purpose to buy it, and the type of person who would drop 350k on a luxury off-roader is definitely the type of person to know about it without them advertising about it.

Not really, Mercedes is using a cut-short marine engine commonly used in German Destroyers.
Its an overpriced clunker designed to rob americans and enrich germany and thats very very bad. Try to sell germans a 350k car and theyll laugh at you while they gl to the bank with all our money
I've had the pleasure to also drive the new 4x4 and one pet peeve of mine was when you turn on the digital rear view camera you can see the top of the spare tire along the bottom of the rear view mirror.

These 2 LED's on the roof front aren't high beam offroad lights but additional bi-funtional DRL's/clearance lights (in Europe they are required from factory due to vehicle height), so that's why they are disabled from the factory due to laws and light colour. It's actual lazy from MB side that at this price point they didn't replaced them for true high beams and similar additional offroad lights for American market just stuck some cheap LED clearance lights for DOT...
Well thats what we’ve come to expect from carmakers anymore. They know we have to have them so they can get away with not doing things for our benefit.

The new G63 4x4 Squared looks so much better then the old one. Living in Sindelfingen, Germany (until recently Mercedes Benz biggest factory in the world) I sometimes see Cars like this. I saw this one first when a neighbour took it home to test drive it and I was stunned, it looked awesome. Then I saw the old one and it really looked goofy. The G36 already is basically a huge fride. But this lifted car looked like if you would put a washing machine or a fridge on top of a giraffe.
I saw one of the old gen 4x4 squared's parked in my small town in Finland once, it had french plates and i'm still flabbergasted.

I can't believe Doug got to review the limited "Edit V2" edition of the new G-Wagon G63!! I hear only 1 was ever produced! Truly astonishing.
I rented one of these in Miami a couple weeks ago. It was electric lime green and totally bad ass. Got more attention than the last time rented a convertible Bentley. Just like that car, while I could afford one, id never ever consider owning one.

The Mercedes AMG G63 4x4 Squared EDIT V2 is indeed such a beast at off-roading.
Doug forgot to mention the speed holes that are cut into the auxiliary bumper too cut down on wind resistance.

Me too! I wish there was more transparency with videos and people put parts of unedited videos out.
Schockel Mountain is also where they test the Unimogs. It kind of is to Daimler offroad vehicles what the Weissach test track is to Porsche sports cars.
This will always be remembered as the ‘and then we had nowhere else to go so the market crashed’ moment for the auto industry.
The last gen 4x4 squared was bonkers. I remember seeing one in traffic on the freeway it was next to a metro transit bus the 4x4 squared was almost as tall as the bus!

I'd consider that color well worth the extra money, myself. Just love the color scheme of this in general, that matte red, and of course you can hardly ever go wrong with all black wheels. This car's way the hell above my paygrade but damned if it's not impressive.
When I see these G-wagons I now think of the whistlindiesel 100 foot jumps and torture tests. I respect these suvs so much more now.

I saw a G1 4x4² the other day on a transport truck. Was cool finally getting to see one irl. Didn't know they even made them after they updated the Gwagon.

I feel like a lot of people don't understand suspension or even transmissions like they do engines. I don't think Doug doesn't know suspension, but I feel like he glosses over it because he thinks it's not worth talking about it.
My east coast dealer has one exactly like this one for the same sticker price BUT with a $150,000.00 market adjustment add.
And a MB sticker on the windshield that states do not drive / do not sell until February

Man engines are getting so much smaller nowadays! A V2 in a giant SUV would’ve been unheard of in the 90s.
Actually you can have those lights, and they can be wired up to be functional from the factory, however they have to be covered if they are functional. In the state where I live if you have those lights in order to pass inspection they have to work but they must be covered.

Funny story, I was recently getting service done to one of our cars and this beast wagen was in the service bay. It was new, but had plates on it. I just assumed the owner did an aftermarket lift, but I was wrong. It’s nice, but not 350k nice…

I’m going to get me one of those! Pretty nice ride, but everyone is saying it is a monster truck? My first Mercedes was a Unimog model 406 with portal axles and 20 spds. Forwards and 8 spds. Reverse! And the tires were 40” tall, now that’s a monster truck!
