What I use to sharpen my tools:
www.worksharpt...
I bought a 60 degree V-tool with a handle made from recycled skateboards and have used it quite effectively to clean up some corners. This video has convinced me to look for some gouges too.
Thats pretty cool sounding.
Great advise for beginners for sure. I use 16mm No.5, 6mm D12 V Tool and 7mm D7 a lot when carving small pieces of basswood. Helps me get to the shape I want before shifting to knife.
Ah nice! Thanks
Thank you Alec for the chisel lesson. I just sold a carving and $$$$ hot in my hands! I LOVE V tools!
hahah! I feel you brother! Spend wisely! Nice job on the sale!
Oh perfect timing I'm looking to add some palm tools to my shop.
Thanks Alec for a great lesson ..love your work
Thanks a lot Gene!!
Great video...I'm just now getting back into carving. I have all kinds of different gouges, knives, and chisels in my collection...the one gouge I can not do with out is my #3 - 1 inch. I also have a fishtail gouge that I recently bought. I think it's a 12mm? I can see that as being another tool that I reach for often!
Thanks for showing us your collection and advise on what to get ,ive been in touch with my local area and there interested in one of my kidneys so when i recover i can go on a chisel gauge spending spree wooohooo !
Good luk with the surgery! The good Lord didn't give you two so you could keep em bof to yourself!
Well explained . Thank you!!
Thanks Tom! Only took me 6 tries too! I'm a natural!
Never tire hearing about the types of carving tools. Especially interested in your favourites. Thanks for sharing ! Oh, also, what category does a Pheil #18 fit into?
Thanks Tom! I’m not familiar with a #18!
If I said that I must have misspoken!
You hadn’t mentioned it, I happened to have picked a couple up upon recommendation. A #18 is like a very deep #11, perhaps with even more vertical sides. Maybe just one of those miscellaneous tools like a fluteroni. Appreciate you replying.
Hirsh chisels are a favorite of mine I believe they are manufactured in Germany.
Nice new videos here 👍
Unfortunately not everybody have the chance to buy used tools. When it comes to new tools, would you recommend a set for someone just starting out? Or rather buy individually piece by piece?
I recommend buying them individually if you can! Yes!
and thank you!
Any fishtail gouge helps me get into places I couldn't with the ordinary gouge. I saved my money and bought some pfeil gouges then bought some palm tools and relief carved a rose
That's the truth Greg! Awesome tools! Nice!!
Great vid. Ben wanting to advance past the one knife carvings. Palm tools is the way that I would go. So the same sizes for favorite 5 on them ? Thanks.
I would! Yep!
What is the difference with an inside or outside cutting edge, and when would you use a gouge with an inside cutting edge? I see all yours have outside cutting edges.
Lol yes ladies can carve...I tell my daughter's the only man you can change is one you have carved.
Monika, you had me actually laughing out loud over here.. Had to read your comment to my wife.
Best comment iv seen in a long time Tu bro dad of two daughters 🦁👊🏼
If I could only figure out how to successfully sharpen my gouges. I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy that WorkSharp 3000 like you have.
Definitely worth the buy!
Thank you
The basswood blocks say unavailable. Do you have alternatives?
I'll look into it! and post them in my next video!
Make sure to wear a glove?
