    I think I remember a video you made about this some time back Anthony, but I never used the feature. I will be using it now as part of my 2023 plan to become a better landscape and waterfall photographer, and a better organizer of photos I make!

    Thanks Anthony for explaining this process. There are many times I need to get a couple of photos into LR that aren't coming from my camera. This will be very useful.

      Yes, most useful here. Else 1st copying fm card to import folder later auto import may duplicate the time.

    I use this feature to import photos from my mobile phone. I have OneDrive set up to automatically backup on the phone, and this is synced to the computer. Lightroom auto import is pointing at the OneDrive camera roll folder on the computer

    Nice video, Tony. I'm looking for a way to get clipboard images into Lightroom, like copy and paste. Is there a watched folder for the clipboard?

    Very interesting. I keep all my images in a single file folder named “Photos by Year”. Each year is listed and includes sub folders such as “01-22 Grand Canyon”. After each trip or shoot, I load the latest images into a new sub file and then import the file into Lightroom. At that time of import I add keywords and import instructions. Now, if I make the “Photoshop by Year” the target file, will Lightroom automatically import the entire new sub file into Lightroom. Thus, a one step process instead of two. One of the things I like about Laminar Neo is that it does seem to update the catalog. I hope this makes sense.

    I think Adobe could do better. Surely it would be a trivial task to have LR create separate subfolders based on import date - or the date of the images?

    Anthony, I bought myself for Christmas, a 4TB external SSD drive. I would like to have my catalog and pictures all on this drive so that when I travel, I have access to all my pics and my catalog. I just imported my catalog over and it is searching for the old drive. Can you go over the process of having the catalog and pics both on the desktop and external drive, and how you keep them synchronized.

  • @richardpearcephotography599

    I use this method to monitor the folder on my sd card. As soon as I plug in my sd card the images auto import directly from the sd card. I then move the images using LR to the final RAW folder.

    I have a file/folder management system that predates my use of Lightroom. I have always "manually" copied my raw files from the camera media to my desired hard drive location and then imported them into LR at that location. I don't like it when LR tries to do something else, and I have no reason to change.

    • @oneeyedphotographer
      @oneeyedphotographer Рік тому

      Similar, because Lr is inflexible regarding the layout on disk. Capture One has many more options. These days, I use a shell script (on Cygwin on Windows) to organise by date. I search every properly-located DCIM folder, and use file creation date. EXIF capture date would be better, but I haven't found a good way to access it from raw files.

    • @rghurst
      @rghurst Рік тому

      @@oneeyedphotographer My file/folder structure takes care of all that. All my photos are organized by shoot location and date. I have a folder for each location with sub-folders for the date of each shoot.
      Location1
      - yyyy-mm-dd
      - yyyy-mm-dd
      - yyyy-mm-dd
      - yyyy-mm-dd
      Location2
      - yyyy-mm-dd
      - yyyy-mm-dd
      - yyyy-mm-dd
      - yyyy-mm-dd
      Then, as soon as I import a batch of files, I rename them to location_yyyy-mm-dd-orginalfilenumber. I don't need to run a script. The organization is just always there. LR supports all of this perfectly.

    I use a Windows PC and copy my files from my card into my chosen folder . I could be on UA-cam Amazon anywhere. When this is done I open Lightroom and in the library module drag and drop into centre of the viewing window. The Lightroom import dialogue opens, OK it and the link to the files are created in seconds.

    Long ago I made a desktop shortcut to a folder on an external hard drive where all my photos live. I have just drug the photos into that shortcut folder and they endup in the external drive folder. But it is not automatic. I'm trying to decide if using your method would confuse me. But looks cool.

    Is there a way to have the imported files follow the date structure for folders that the default import uses. I know many people organize by project but I still organize by date.

    Enjoyed your video. I use the import dialog to rename the files and insure that they end up in specific folders (typically based on photo location). I select a subset of photos to go into a specific destination folder. If there are many photos on my input media it will take some time to display the thumbnails from which I make the selection. I then complete the import. However if I have photos from a different location I must repeat this process. That is, I must start with "Import" again, wait for the thumbnails to display, then select a subset from the remaining photos and complete that set.
    Is there any way to iterate through the displayed set of thumbnails, selecting a subset, importing to a destination, then selecting the next subset, etc. without having to reinitiate the overall "Import" operation again?

    Anthony, I'm trying to use a desktop folder as my watched folder, but Lightroom gives me an error message saying I can't use a network folder as the watched folder. I'm confused since obviously a folder on my Mac desktop isn't a network folder. Ideas? Thanks.

    I’m really struggling how to import images into Lightroom because, please call thick if you wish, you say in your create a folder, but you haven’t said what to name it, which makes no sense to me at all or where to put it, I’m using a Mac, it doesn’t have a c drive, I’m really lost, I’d appreciate if it I knew where to put it, I can think I can understand seeing all of your images but I’m not to sure please would you run this again because I’m just not getting it at all, many thanks Simon, oh I shoot an awful lot of live music shots do you have an email address that I could send you a shot from one of my gigs to see what you would do with it please, I’ll ensure I have the permission from the artist of course.
    Many thanks Simon

    This is the same process you need to do for tethering, nothing new really. Also not very good when you need a new folder for each shoot you do since you need to create the folders anyway, may as well do it via LR when you import. Even if you use one big folder then create collections, you're doing the same amount of work basically
