- SINGER B.J. THOMAS DIES AT 78
Five-time Grammy award winner and Grammy Hall of Fame inductee, B.J. Thomas, died on 05/30/2021 at home in Arlington, Texas at the age of 78 from complications due to stage four lung cancer.
Thomas’ career was anchored by numerous enduring hits, among them his million-selling cover of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” the Grammy-winning “(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song” and the iconic “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” which won the Academy Award for best original song. A five-time Grammy award winner and Grammy Hall of Fame inductee, Thomas has sold over 70 million albums worldwide, scoring eight No. 1 hits and 26 Top 10 singles over his 50+ years in the music industry. His lengthy chart history led to him being named one of Billboard’s Top 50 Most Played Artists Over The Past 50 Years. Such memorable hits as “I Just Can’t Help Believing, “Don’t Worry Baby,” “Whatever Happened To Old Fashioned Love,” “New Looks From An Old Lover” and “Hooked on a Feeling” have made him a staple on multiple radio formats over the years.
Born in rural Hugo, OK, Billy Joe Thomas moved to Houston, Texas with his family and where he grew up absorbing a variety of musical influences from the traditional country of Ernest Tubb and Hank Williams Dr. to the soulful sounds of Jackie Wilson and Little Richard, whose “Miss Ann” was the first single B.J. ever bought. He began singing in church as a child and in his teens joined the Houston-based band the Triumphs.
Thomas’s first taste of success came in 1966 when he recorded “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” with producer Huey P. Meaux. Released by Scepter Records, it peaked at No. 8 on the pop charts and became his first million-selling single. He released the follow-up single, “Mama,” and delivered his first solo album that same year.
Thomas’ second million-selling hit came in 1968 with the release of “Hooked on a Feeling,” from On My Way, his sophomore album for Scepter. During his days with the New York label, he became friendly with Ronnie Milsap and Dionne Warwick, who were also on the roster at the time. It was Warwick who introduced him to songwriter-producer Burt Bacharach. In January 1970, Thomas topped the charts with “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.” Penned by Bacharach and Hal David, the song was featured in the classic Paul Newman/Robert Redford film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, earning the Oscar for best original song. Sales quickly exceeded two million copies and it has remained one of the most enduring pop hits of all time, reoccurring in such films as Forrest Gump, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, Clerks II, and Spider-Man 2 as well as multiple TV shows over the years. He followed that career-defining single with a string of pop/rock hits, including “Everybody's Out of Town,” “I Just Can't Help Believing,” “No Love at All” and “Rock and Roll Lullaby.”
After six years with Scepter Records, Thomas signed with Paramount Records where he released two albums-1973’s Songs and 1974’s Longhorns & Londonbridges. In 1975, Thomas released the album Reunion on ABC Records, featuring “(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song,” which holds the distinction of being the longest titled No. 1 hit ever on Billboard’s Hot 100.
Like many successful pop/rock artists, Thomas fell into drugs and battled substance abuse. His wife Gloria became a born-again Christian and the turning point in Thomas’ life came when he became a believer in 1976. He immediately quit drugs and found an avenue for expressing his faith in gospel music. Thomas signed with Myrrh Records and released the album Home Where I Belong in 1976. Produced by Chris Christian, the project won Thomas a Grammy and became the first of two Dove Award wins. The album became the first gospel record to sell a million copies. T
In addition to his country and gospel success, Thomas also enjoyed a healthy run on the country charts in the 1980s with such hits as “Whatever Happened to Old Fashioned Love,” “New Looks from an Old Lover Again,” “The Whole World’s in Love When You’re Lonely” and “Two Car Garage.” “(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song” was No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Country Songs charts. It won the Grammy for Best Country Song in 1976 and was nominated for CMA Single of the Year. On his 39th birthday in 1981, Thomas became the 60th member of the Grand Ole Opry.
Though Thomas will be remembered as one of this generation’s premiere vocalists and a consummate entertainer, the humble artist was most proud of his family. He’s survived by his wife of 53 years Gloria, their three daughters Paige Thomas, Nora Cloud, and Erin Moore, and four grandchildren, Nadia Cloud, Keira Cloud, Ruby Moore, and Billy Joe Moore.

I started singing with engelbert when I was in school. I got saved at seventeen and was introduced to bj's music. I became addicted to his voice and style of music and have been singing his songs ever since, in fact last Sunday I sung one of his songs in church. 😂Will keep on singing his songs until we meet in the clouds. Bless his soul. I am now going to 63 years of age.
I just turned 63. BJ was one of my cousins. He was a star, but never forgot his roots and family. I miss him.
BJ Thomas was so gracious, friendly, charming, down to earth, friendly, empathic, understanding & an great guy that really did loved & adored his millions of loyal fans! he was always good to everybody, his fans, his family, his staff, and band mates, everyone loved him , especially all of us baby boomers! #BJThomasFansForever I met him twice, the first time, i went to his concert in 1979 on my 21st birthday, he sang for me and gave me an color autographed photo and invited backstage for a meet & greet, then in 1982, he invited me to do sing song duets with him at his concert in New Mexico which i did .
He was awesome in person. I know, we were cousins. He was always down to earth and loved us all.

Sad day. The very first song I remember singing, and my parents always commented...I was a foster child at 5yrs, well, evidently when the social worker brought me to thier house, I was singing, raindrops keep falling on my head. I had been through several foster homes, and out off all the different music I'm sure I had heard, raindrops was the one that stayed with. Thank you BJ Thomas, RIP.
my long time friend JOHN D. was a foster child and what a wonderful guy he turned out to be. I think he only had one long term foster parents. 30 yrs later i rented a place to a woman who was in many foster homes and became a patho. liar...I guess its how she survived. She didnt want to talk about her fosters at all. so sad.
Yary gork, all depends your outlook I guess, from the time I was 2 yrs old till I was 5 yrs old I went approximately 25 foster homes. Granted I already had the personality I was gonna have by there time my parents adopted me....I was good at being alone.... I'm a OTR trucker, stay out 2 months at least at a time....I couldn't enjoy anything else. Tried the married thing, didn't work for me, luckily no kids. Like to think my foster home journey made me better at what I do today.

@@johnm.3762 one of my foster homes really had an impact on me, my religious, political views and more, you could say I grew up wanting to be like my foster dad, and not my real dad that I still know today and who I care for. I went through hell but when the smoke cleared I have several children, many grandkids and an awesome wife. I am happy with who I am. Those of us who went through the "system" are fighters some are good and some are bad. I like to think I'm one of the good and I can probably say that about you.

We were fortunate enough to see Mr. Thomas a couple times at a small Opry House. We were about 30 ft from him and could see all the effort and feelings he put into each song. He also talked about his early years traveling with a lot of the other big stars and how he got messed up with booze and drugs and how his family caused him to get his life straight. Not many dry eyes in the house until he got back to the music. It was one of the best concerts we've ever seen. Another time he came to town he was sick and apologized up front if he didn't sound right but he didn't disappoint - he was just as awesome! They'll never be another BJ Thomas!!

He was definitely one of the best male vocalist around during the latter part of the 20th century. I'm glad all of his songs were recorded for all to enjoy! The lady that helped he and his wife adopt the Korean daughter, also helped my parent's adopt a Korean girl back in the 70's. Her name was Nora Lam and she helped a lot of families adopt Korean children.

What a legend so glad I grew up with his music, and it has lasted many many years, and will probably last many many more years to come
He still had the quality of voice, that richness, was still beautiful. I remember seeing him in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and that raindrops song all over the radio all the time. I remember when I became a Christian and then later he did and his were some of the first Christian albums I bought. He kept his faith, kept his wife, kept his voice. Now he's singing with the angels and he is truly a Happy Man.

He was really a nice down-to-earth guy. I was going to college in the mid to late ‘70’s in Nashville, TN. I was working in a hotel on Music Row and he was staying there-and his wife Gloria-while he was recording some music. So I had the opportunity to see and talk to him. It was not long after he had been in some trouble but also around the time he was getting his life straightened out. He was kind a gentleman to everyone. Some didn’t like his wife very much although I had no problems with her. Paige was just a little girl. Looking back I could see that Gloria was really just trying to look out for him-which I kind of suspected even at the time.
seemed like a nice, quiet spoken humble type of guy..never met him...just an observation going by his interviews/ interactions with others on video.RIP
What a great story. '78 there about is when he and Gloria found salvation. He had so many close calls and actually was dead on a plane and was revived. I'm sure Gloria was extra protective early on. He literally got off drugs with God's help and had no withdrawals. He had been thru withdrawals plenty before and was dreading what he knew was coming.. God spared him the pain. Home Where I Belong is the book that he and Gloria wrote. It is jaw dropping..he was up to 500 pills a day! Loved him so he put on awesome concert performances. I feel so sad for Gloria, his 3 daughters and his grandkids!
Without Gloria the world would have lost this incredible talent in his 30s.

Such a great loss. Losing a great and talented Man with a magical voice will be missed. Mr. Thomas may have earned his wings earlier then most but he did leave us his music and so many memories of the person that sang those beautiful songs. You were Loved and will be Greatly Missed. Rest in Eternal Peace. My Condolences to his Lovely Wife Gloria and his Children as well. I too have lost a special sister to stage four cancer and it's a loss that takes time to heal. My Thoughts and Prayers for All who have experienced this painful loss. God Bless You All. 🙏🏻

I am a huge fan of B. J and my sincerest condolences go out to his wife of 53 years, his daughters and grandchildren. My husband and I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert at the Majestic theater in San Antonio many years ago. It was an unforgettable experience. There will never be another voice like that of B. J. Thomas. God bless you all and comfort you during your time of grief.
