Have you tried oatmeal this way? You have great ideas. I have subscribed. I am alone and having one person meals available is a great idea - esp if the electricity goes out for a long time. I have been basically doing single ingredients with the idea of putting it together when I am ready for it. I use coconut milk and a nut mixed cereal (homemade). I am going to try some and it might be a good snack too.
My first batch of my own granola mix did good, but I did not have the small mylar bags yet. If you go to Rose Red Homestead, she has meals in a bag video. She puts whole meals made from her own canning, dehydrating or f.d. foods to quickly put together a meal. This was basically for at home after a long day at work, but I realized that I needed a meal in midmorning and then my nighttime meals. TY so much for your creativity and showing how you do it. I have the small f.d. bags this time and will add my own coconut milk that I f.d. - so just need to add some purified water. I am also doing my own eggs and will add the milk and dehydrated vanilla powder into those also (will test that out) might add some fully cooked bacon bits too - or in a small jar to add later. I found tiny 1.5 oz for seasonings or may dressings and 4 oz with lids (unfortunately, my sealer just doesn't seal the regular sized lids - so I put a oxygen absorber in them. I absolutely love the idea of putting together my own f.d. ingredients that with water are ready to eat - I am alone and cooking for one is - well NOT fun :-( But, taking a meal all ready and eating it is great! Oh, and I bought the brown bags with handles on Amazon to pack and label for a meal or a day. If backpacking, you would probably want a big mylar bag for each day. or something like that :-) You can come to TN and hunt on my farm - have a Bobcat that needs to be offed. The blue state people are buying up everything here and not growing anything - but definitely pushing the wildlife all around to find quiet land. I have 28 acres and guess it is not big enough.
Nice one. I was planning some MRE-style meals myself and my breakfast options were a little lite. I'll need to find some larger molds I think. Thanks for sharing John! Appreciate you and your work.
I just came across your page and have been binge watching!! Love your creativity! Were the Cheerios soggy, once reconstituted? Did you try them dry? If so how did they taste?
The pink molds are from amazon you can find them in my affiliate store at: www.amazon.com/shop/johninbibs and the metal dividers were purchased from frozenright.com look for the modular moulds that is what they are called
I've done so many videos that I don't recall. The molds I use here are great for single serving sizes and in a nut shell I would say that is what I use them for. I really like them and they are good quality! Not too expensive
I wonder if you mixed up your powdered milk with half the amount of water then put it with the cereal in the cubes? That way it would already be smooth with no clumps when you reconstituted it. Or add some of powdered milk to what ever milk you put with the cereal making it a stronger solution. Again no lumps. Maybe.
You do think outside the box! The cherries are already dry so why not just put them and fd milk in bag? Not tried either way so I don’t know. Also have you tried buttermilk? I think I would like to try ingredients for biscuits, any thoughts on that?
Is boxed cereal REALLY dry? For long term storage I didn't want to take the risk especially with milk. I don't like buttermilk but do like buttermilk biscuits
I just ordered a machine so I've been passing time watching your videos. 2 questions. 1, could they have been left in that silicone mold and put into the freeze dryer or did they have to be taken out and 2, could you have eaten the cereal as that little solid brick as if it were say a granola bar?
congratulations on your exciting purchase. The quick answer is yes the silicon molds will withstand the freeze dryer and it would work. It would probably take much longer as there is less surface for the moisture to evaporate from. I would remove always myself. These particular bars could be eaten as a snack bar but they were kind of delicate, most probably they would crumble to pieces after the first bite.
You said you let the milk soak into the cereal for 20 minutes before freezing and freeze drying. I was wondering how quickly the cereal went soggy after rehydration. Is it comparable to non-FD cereal, or does it get soggy quicker since it was soggy before FD?
Love it. As a mom i might even leave the cereal in bars for an on the go breakfast for the kids.
So glad to have found this channel. Still waiting for our Freeze Dryer to come but watching your videos helps keep me focused. Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!

Sorry I haven't
Oatmeal stores for many years in bulk, so there is no real need to freeze dry it.

Thank you, the cheerios were just like fresh from the box when rehydrating not soggy and tasted great dry as well
John, much appreciate your channel and advice on freeze drying. Where did you purchase your pink mold and metal tray dividers?

i wonder if you could just freeze dry the cereal then add more of the powdered milk when storing?
@@PS-ut5ct agree! I wonder!
Did you freeze the molds in a regular freezer to get the Cheerios/milk bars stay together and then put in the freeze dryer?
Yes
Hi John, I was wondering what other items you have discovered to use with your pink molds used in this cereal video.
I've done so many videos that I don't recall. The molds I use here are great for single serving sizes and in a nut shell I would say that is what I use them for. I really like them and they are good quality! Not too expensive

Great idea.
How long did they take to freeze dry?
Hi where are those moulds from

Where did you get those pink molds.
I bought them from Amazon, here is my affiliate link: amzn.to/3GOhDeH
Did you freeze them first before you put them in the freezer dryer
Yes I pre froze and removed from the molds before freeze drying

Nope. Just like boxed cereal. No quicker
