- The students of Tawa College, Wellington, New Zealand, did a staged performance of a remixed version of Julie Andrew's "Do-Re-Mi" at the Wellington Railway Station. They were filmed with the purpose of creating a music-video supplimentary to their annual musical performances - starting on Friday 24th July 2009 @ Tawa College.
The Do-Re-Mi dance idea has been inspired by a mass-mob dance in a Belgium train station, as what seems to be dozens and dozens of people dancing in public, taking many daily commuters by total surprise!
Check it out: • Sound of Music | Centr...
Tawa College's dancing was also captured by TV One news cameras:

I don`t care how you guys name this, it is lovely. Look into all this happy faces. Thank You Wellingtons
Wonderful. I lived in Melbourne for more than six years and traveled to New Zealand many times. The world would be a better place if more people adopted their values.
These kids carried out an amazing performance...and contrary to some comments, this was not intended to outdo any other flash mob performances.
Well done Great performance.
I've been to this place....it's been a long time....but loved the city. I loved New Zealand....very nice people and very pretty.
Congratulations! The group showcase a best performance, interpretation and concept of the sound of Music. I hope schools around the globe will follow. Thumbs up Youth!
I live in Canada. I watched the one in Antwerp which was great, but hard to see clearly. Love this one as everyone was visible and clear. Great job! Great dancing! Thank you for sharing.
Lovely !!! What a joy !!! So many young & fresh faces all having a grand time !!!
This sort of thing make so many people happy, just look at the faces of the audience and the people dancing, wonderful. Now I am happy too so thankyou for the upload
WOOOW...VERY...VERY NICE....YOU GUYS ARE REALLY GREAT. AND SWEET.!!! REGARDS FROM CHILE...
Awesome! Thank you Ricardo!
pretty good guys!!! I think the matching outfits kinda gave it away.
It doesnt get the whole effect of the Belgian version but then again they had the crowd power to get the element of surprise. Still, that must've been blast to do! well done guys
I don't care what all of you say - I liked it. I really liked both of them. I was trying to imagine how I would feel standing in the train station and Julie Andrews comes singing over the loud speaker. That would have put a smile on my face. Then to have these 'comuters' suddenly explode into dance - why I would have a HUGE smile all through it (and would probably wish I was somewhere in the balcony to get the whole effect). That probably brought smiles to many who really needed it.
Really great! Very entertaining! These students have done themselves and their college proud! It would take a lot of courage to get out there and do a public performance like this, and they did a fantastic job! Well done!
Anything that makes travel weary people perk up and smile is always a positive. Kudos to those kids...it took many, many hours of practice to put up this show.
Well done kids! It takes courage to perform something so public without an expected audience or audience reception. I thought it was great!
I love this I paused it because I know it's amazing so now I'm going to watch the video again so thank you thank you thank you and thank you
A big thankyou, I really enjoyed it and had tears in my eyes as my dad use to work at Wellington Rail Station and I use to live at Takapu Road not far from Tawa and the college. I now live in Australia.
I am a music teacher and I loved it. Definitely going to use some of your moves (although not all of them with 7 year olds!) Brilliant.
Excuse me but, this is not correctly how to sing I am in professional choir and im sure in there voices they're not using there "Aw-O" sound. And they do not do correct movements and breathing such as sucking air into there stomachs, keeping tight, and also they do not have a correct posture for singing. Please reply if you think what I think, I would appreciate it alot. 😄
That was a very pleasant blast from the past. Quite surprising, the youngsters picked an old, golden number. Beautifully performed.
What a fabulous performance! Wish l had been there to soak up the enthusiasm of the children. Hope to hear more of the same. Thank for making my day. Tom
This is absolutely amazing and beautiful Thankyou for sharing
Wonderful - this chance discovery has got our Sunday off to a great start. My 2 year old loved it every bit as much as me :-)
Thank you +Patrick Cheeseman! I hope you both have a happy New Year.
Well done!!! I always enjoy when young adults make good use of their time and entertain in the process. Don't compare to Antwerp!!
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!! This song along brings a smile to your lips and seeing the energy and enthusiam everyone put into it made me get up and join in while watching it. GOOD JOB TO EVERYONE INVOLVED!!!!!
This is so wonderfull. I just like this very much. When I hear this song it makes me so happy . Thank You all !!!
Quit criticizing. The purpose of this one is to advertise the college play. They did a great job of it! The Belgium one was for the purpose of causing a surprise and it was also accomplished. Why compare the two? Different purposes. Great dancing, both! I love the song.
Rock on guys for a great performance. Pretty sure Julie Andrews would not have expected be en vogue 50 years later. Sooo pleased she is. Class act x
that was Excellent. I loved the dancing, music, and Julie Andrews too.
It doesn't matter that the kids "weren't as good" as Antwerp or whatever - they did a wonderful job on their own merits, and that's a happy song no matter where one goes. I think some of the onlookers were surprised by the events, even if it was staged - there's always someone that didn't see/hear any announcement in news media. And the more the kids perform, the better they get! (and I LOVED the button-rimmed hat, 1980's or not!!). Well done!!
It was AWESOME! I am from Canada...and LOVED it!! Great job guys!!! THE SOUND OF MUSIC is a world wide movie musical favorite. I am sure if Julie Andrews watched it, she would think it neat!!!
We need more and more of this..... The look on passers by's faces says it all and the look on the dancers' faces is a gift all on its own...
F A N T A S T I C
Give us more!
spectacular, fantastic job to all the college students who were a part of this
I would love to know how these young people have made out on life's journey.. Their exuberant expression of life is wonderful.
Paul I was thinking the exact same thing mate. These appear to be great youngsters who just want to bring happiness to the world, I in 2021 am watching as I browsed UA-cam for a bit of joy in these weird times and this made my day.
When I was a kid i use to go through that train station atleast 3 times a week for years .
Love Wellington.
Sadly i haven't been back there since 1981.
Excellent choreography. Enough vibe. Good visualization.
Very nice!!! I'd like there to be a unique local version @ every regional train station in every country on planet. Bring joy and art to the world.
Great kids, great performance, lots of fun for all involved. Keep up the spirit, the world needs lots more of it. Sure beats most of the other stuff out there anytime.
Fantastic! This had a completely different feel than the Antwerp version. They were doing it as an advertisement, but this was your school work. The expressions from your faces is great. This made me smile just and much as the other one.
You all deserve an A+++++++++++++++++!
This was a wonderful performance! Thanks so much for posting it. The energy and enthusiasm is so apparent - I'll be smiling all day!
Love it. Thank you all for giving me a good start of the New Year 2010. Well done New Zealanders.
I also like the Antwerp Station more. But anyway, this one is also very enjoyable. I joined them singing Do Re Mi during the run.
fun stuff .. train stations entertainment .. love it ..
This brings me in a very good mood ! Thank you !!!!!
if people would read the comments at the side before commenting they would see that this was not meant to be a flash mob but a tribute to the antwerp flash mob. this is a college class making a music video and it was very well done. thanks i actually enjoyed it.
Watch the UA-cam video w/ flash mob of this song in Antwerp Belgium. It is positively magnificent! This one is OK on a small scale but can’t begin to compare w/ Antwerp.
congratulations the kids of tawa college,i heard med students burnt sofas at a cricket ground not so long back, you kids are a credit,i mean it from the heart, well done, brilliant!!
That was really excellent, good on the kids for having the nouse to get up in front of strangers and doing this. They should all be proud.
¡Me ha encantado! Es mi película favorita desde niña y esta interpretación es espectacular.¡Hasta me daban ganas de bailar!.
I think it's pitiful that people are so judgmental of these kids. I think it's absolutely brave of them to perform in front of strangers and in a public place. Bravo, I don't I'd have the guts to do it.
So i saw both versions of this the Belgian and the American version. i give these students a great deal of credit, unfortunately. Our American Culture is so far down the toilet it seems that many people will not value the importance of the arts or any culture. As for everyone complaining it was a copy. So is every piece of music once performed after the original. Remember that next time you pop your CD in, or by tickets to a hip hop concert. Its still a copy from the first.
Dear UA-cam,
I would like to remind you that there is a description bar which A) states that is was not an original idea, B) that it was for a school performance, and C) it was filmed by one person - the cameras you see are from tv news.
A show like this is for your ENJOYMENT, and not your over-zealous critique. Sorry Sanni3003, I don't mean for your to cop the brunt of this message, but, sometimes messages left on this video are plain senseless.
Have a good day,
Andrew
Loved it! It's easier to see than the other video because the floor is lighter and the area is better lit.
Wow, that was something. A great song and a great effort on the part of those kids.
Muy superior y original el hecho en Belgica, en la estación Antwerp. Aunque es de reconocer el esfuerzo neozelandes,, felicidades a ambos.
Great job. Do more like this.
The kids are great and from America I would like to say "thank you" for your effort.
Well done.Very enjoyable.A wonderful performance.
Magnificent presentation!!!!
I wish I'd been in Wellington when this happened. I went to that New World when I was staying at the green hostel over the road! New Zealand is the most awesome country!
This is what music is about ..fun and enjoyment. Well done!!!!
Congratulations! Alus bisaan euy truslah berkarya from west java indonesia
this was pretty awesome. but i do like the phone adverts we have here in england where people just start singing in the middle of train stations :) i love the reactions on everyones faces
It is always wonderful, and a miracle of the joy of living, when young people perform in a moment of joy filled time. This IS true art.. whatever all these comments and comparisons are about, who cares! Any joy, anyplace in this world, is a reminder of something larger than ourselves and our momentary issues, that should be embraced with gratitude, not attitude.
The beauty of the happiness and energy that the youth can bring.
When I say young people, it's really young. I bet that the biggest of them will not have more than 22, it is nice to see the smile of the people who watch them forgetting for a moment the daily problems that torment them.
Can you imagine being in Union Station and this song is suddenly played over the loud speakers, etc.? I think it would boost the morale of all the commuters!
As someone who often takes Via Rail from Toronto to Kingston, I have to say I was a bit surprised to hear them announcing my train in Wellington. XD Such a great and cute flash mob! :)
I don't know why people criticize this, it was great to see it just like the Antwerp version was. They all seemed to be having a great deal of fun and isn't that more important then whether they are costumed, or whatever. Lets just enjoy watching people enjoying themselves. This should be repeated in every major station in every major capital city.
I really enjoyed the Belgium video. It was totally unexpected. I loved how people you assumed were just bystanders and/or audience members ended up being a part of the actual production! This one is cute too though. Great job guys!
This performance looks a lot "more made" because of the costumes and acting etc.. I'm prefering the Antwerp version because of it's instant improvisation and collaboration with the public because of it's mob.
This one isn't really a surprise but rather an act. There could be a lot more potential with this, if it would be less of a closed prestudied act with more collaboration towards the public.
Still, very good trying to create something similar with a smaller group. Kudos!
I enjoy to see it, I love this song and the movie, I have had seen almost 200 times in all my life. But telling you the truth, the belgium way was much better, surprising the people was great to see it. But keep going and getting better...
Love it...esp being from my kiwi friends in nz...way to go guys...awesome...
Enjoyable - - and the smiles on the dancer's faces - - they lift your spirits.
So Refreshing and Beautiful ! Thank you!
I remember this, ended up staying and watching it and ended up being late for an appointment but what could I do? It isn't every day random kids come out and dance in the middle of Wellington train station, you just had to see it. xD
Great performance guys.
the fun part about the original was that the dancers looked like normal commuters...
Thanks so much...some much needed refreshment especially in these trying times
I think the kids did an excellent job, but i like the Belgium one better because it seem more spontaneous. Good job!
This block buster musical hit of 1965 directed by Robert Wise starring Julie Andrews n Christpfer Plummer looks as fresh as ever.Great film watch even today.👍👍👍
This is wonderful. So glad to see other countries getting on this as well! I don't see it as a "copy", I see it as an "inspiration!" To keep it going throughout the world..PEACE!
Still amazing and many thanks in 2021😍❤
Excellent! So happy for you to have accomplished such a wonderful performance! Donna in Alabama. U.S.A.
Loved it, did well to have so many dancers in such a tight space & it not be an issue too.
love it, so uplifting, i wonder what there doing now , 11 years later
Awesome job ,by a group of outstanding performer.......
Great. I hope that not too many people missed their train because of your performance.
Looks like the performers and the audience had a great time. KUDOS to you for this!
@djjorgie
The Belgium one was staged too. Check what the description box said in the original video "More than 200 dancers were performing with just 2 rehearsals, they created this amazing stunt! . It is a promotion stunt for a Belgium television program, where they are looking for someone to play the leading role, in the musical of "The Sound of Music". The Belgium performance was 1,000 times better than Tawa College...both performances were staged and rehearsed too.
Even if it was staged , It was well done !! I think the anthwerp performance was also
staged , Only differance was the people in the station carrying on about there every day buisness had no clue it was which is what made it so good. But your remake was also good. Well Done !
Thank you guys, you put a smile on my face.
genial, levanta el espiritu, lo esucho y veo todos los dias, para darme animo. Gracias por dar alegria
This is actually quite good. I love what you did with the kids, the choreography is great!
What are all these people whining about. This performance is not to compare with the one in Belgium. As the person in the description box said, it was inspired by the one in Belgium, that doesn't mean they wanted to do better. I think it's a great video especially considering its purpose.
Great job guys. :)
Impressive :) very enjoyable and I love the song being used!
I saw plenty of happy faces there - nice job!! It was kewl. Thanks.
Absolutely amazing, wonderful performance of a fantastic group of young people. Such a happy clip. My fellow Belgians might have had the idea first and it's since been done many times, but this is by far my favourite interpretation. Uplifting and warm, I love the sunny faces.
Beaucoup de créativité!
A lot of creativity !
Joey.
i read the description and i loved it. very well done new zealand. i thought the costumes and make-up were cool.
Remember of Very Beautiful Family Old Movie SOUND OF MUSIC 1965. Thanks to Tawa College Students.
To correct some common misunderstanding here, this was not supposed to be a 'flash mob' surprise/guerilla theatre event. It was a more formal planned and staged event.
And it was high school students, not professional dancers.
All in all, well done Tawa College.
This version may not have been as big as the one held in Belgium, but the fact remains was equally aspiring and great to see the students enjoying their work.
I love this! It's so passionate!!
