    While I have never been to Australia, I can say that I fondly recall flying on 747's when they were used on domestic routes across Canada.
    You are very right, while the 787 and A380 are gorgeous planes, they will never be "The Queen of the Skies."

    When I was approximately 10 years old in the mid 70s, my school group went on a field trip to SFO airport. Part of the field trip was the opportunity to tour a Pan Am 747 and I had the opportunity to sit in the captain's chair. That cemented my love for all things aviation and I went on to become an avionics technician and a private pilot. Some of my favorite childhood memories include planespotting with my father at SFO. Back then, they had an outdoor observation deck, immediately below the control tower. The view was breathtaking and afforded me the opportunity to see all of the great airliners and airlines of the 60s and 70s. Later on, as a young man, I deployed overseas for military service several times by 747. I will always love the aircraft and how it represents a happier, simpler time in my life and fond memories of my father.

      Such a great story David! I suspect that a lot of bonding happened on airport observation decks!

    Was lucky to have flown on this very aircraft in 2004 when she was painted in the Wunala Dreaming livery. I remember being impressed with the 777 style cabin fixtures. I'd never seen that in a 747 before or since. It was a special charter day trip out of London Heathrow to Cork, Ireland that I managed to wangle myself onto via the company I worked for at the time. The QF London sales office arranged it all and there were spare seats at the last minute first come first served. Without even getting the leave cleared with my boss, I just went ahead and put my name forward.... And it paid off. We had a few hours courtesy of Qantas in Kilkenny Harbour followed by lunch in a hotel in the town which was followed up a short talk/speech by the captain who was the 747 chief pilot for QF at the time, giving an insight into the flight planning for that day, routings, alternate airports etc... before we headed back to Cork airport to fly back to Heathrow. I remember there being a ATR42 and a A320 in at the time and OEJ just dwarfed them. Quite surreal seeing Qantas up on the departure board at Cork too! TV cameras caught our arrival although the footage on the RTE website is long gone. There were crowds who'd come out to the airport, their cars lining the access roads as we taxied out waving us off. An absolutely amazing day. I also managed to fly the original Wunala Dreaming 747-400 in 1998 LHR-BKK. While that was a scheduled service with all the bells and whistles of Business Clsss service to appreciate, it just wasn't as fun or as intimate for me as that day out to Cork on OEJ. That will always be a truly special day for me.

    First flight , BA Singapore to Perth in 1997 . Recently did Sydney to Perth on VH OJS, we are seeing some days with up to three Syd to Per return 747 crossings at the moment , some good opportunities to be sentimental if you are crossing east to west or vice versa.

    I didn't realise the 747 had Kruger type slats, I would have noticed this from your video, but thanks for showing this in the first place. They do the job, but not very efficient! I first flew on a 747 in 1972 as a young kid and apart from the fact it looked huge from the outside, the scene for me was set going through the forward door, it was like walking through the entrance of a mansion compared to any other plane. Then you saw the massively wide cabin, so wide the toilets and galleys were positioned in blocks in the centre of the plane. Never seen that before either. I was awestruck even though at 12 years old, I'd already been on more than 40 airline flights on nearly all of the types available from 1955 onwards.

    Never flown in a 747 but always dreamed of having a seat in the upper deck. Now spend my time watching the cargo version fly in and out of my local airport at Glasgow Prestwick, together with the occasional visit from Air Force One.

    Fantastic video, Paul. My earliest memories of flying on 747s are from the early-mid 1980s when we flew SYD-LAX. This was pre nonstop flights to the USA so we went via Tahiti (other stopovers between Sydney and the West Coast were Nadi or Honolulu). I can't tell you exactly what model the aircraft was but I distinctly remember the brilliant flying kangaroo livery and the spectacular spiral staircase that led to the upper deck. In those days we spent most of the flight using the old stethoscope type headphones to listen to Barry Bissell present the latest hits on one of the music channels. Of course there was also the odd movie played on the screen on the bulkhead but as a kid I had next to no chance of being able to see over the seats and passengers between me and the the screen. In later years I remember the first time I travelled on a nonstop flight back from the USA on a 747-SP. I also remember my first flight on a 747-400 in the mid 1990s and loving the look of the winglets. Thanks for allowing me to reminisce about what will always be my favourite passenger jet.

    Great video Paul! I flew OEJ on the sector before your flight (HKG to SYD landed 27/09). It’s an awesome aircraft that looks amazing in QF colours (although looked even better when it was Wunala Dreaming proper). I hope to book another Qantas 747 trip before they retire.

    • @PaulStewartAviation
      @PaulStewartAviation  6 років тому

      Yes I agree that the Wunala dreaming livery looked great! It would have been great if they kept it although I suspect it was too expensive to maintain (repaint and the extra fuel burn from the added weight).

    My dream since I was a child, far, far too many years ago, was to fly in a 747 in the upper deck before the 747's go the way of the Concorde (another airplane I've always wanted to fly on but could never afford the cost of the ticket). I will finally be able to fulfill my dream when I'll be flying on a British Airways 747 on the upper deck from Vancouver (YVR) to London (LHR) in December 2018 and return in January 2019. Iam SO looking forward to it. One more item to tick off on my bucket list. I love flying and only wish I could afford to do more.

    Its amazing how well the 747 has ages - the older it hets, the better it goes. I remember flying back from UK in 1972, the plane seemed to stop everywhere - 7 times I think from UK to Sydney, including a stop I'm Darwin.And now 45 years later they are still I'm the sky, one stop to UK. Or non stop Sydney/Brisbane!!

    We recently did a trip to the US which included stops in Victorville and Everett. Our flight over to LAX was on an AA 787-9 and we flew home from SFO on VH-OEJ. Fourteen hours to appreciate just what an amazing aircraft the 747 still is and reminisce on how sad it will be when they are all gone.
    On paper everything about the 787-9 flight was better than OEJ, but sitting in 1A/1B knowing it would be the last time we would fly on a Qantas 747 was so much more special.

    • @PaulStewartAviation
      @PaulStewartAviation  6 років тому +1

      Agreed! Objectively, the 787-9 (and A350 and A380) are much more comfortable, although they're not as special as the 747. :)

    Great tribute Paul. I’m old enough to remember the first 747 arrival at Sydney back in 1970. I, along with a large crowd, watched in awe as the Pan Am jumbo taxied to its gate, dwarfing the 707’s. I have flown on the queen several times since, but I might just plan one more flight, just as you did.

    I only found out about the domestic flights a few days ago and booked myself on one to Brisbane. I've always adored the 747 since I was a kid, when we flew an Air New Zealand 747-400 to LA. Was truly "Love at First Flight". Was disappointed about possibly not getting one last trip on a 747 before they're all retired from passenger service.

      You may be glad to hear that there's rumours around that Qantas may delay the 747 retirement, but we'll see. :) But it's true that the 747 will be gone soon (2020 or 2021) and it's a sad day for aviation. I can't wait for the SYD-BNE flight next month! Hopefully we have some clear weather!

    Oh nice, I actually saw this exact plane, same day flying over Archerfield airport during an aviation flight camp. Heard a noise, looked up and she suddenly emerged from a cloud and looked massive from where we positioned.
    We also went into Hanger 3 at BNE, and watched that Hawaiian A330-200 seen in the video do an engine startup + test. Was a good week.

    Spectacular footage of the Queen of the Skies departing from Sydney. It is always interesting - to me anyway - to see on rotation the wing flex upwards as the weight of the aircraft comes off the undercarriage and onto the wings as the aircraft lifts into the sky. I flew in one of the first Qantas 747's back in the 1970's to Singapore and then into a Douglas DC9 onto Kathmandu and then trekking in the Himalayas. The 747 opened up the world of flying to poor university students like me back then in the 70's. Thanks Paul for the usual descriptive commentary - eg the "General Electric CF6's explode fuel into music". Great footage on ascent over Sydney and descent into Brisbane.

Have flown in 747s to Fiji (QF -200 & Air Pacific -400), South Africa (QF -400ER, SA -300 upper deck on an internal flight and a SA -SP, SA still flew them to Perth in '01), Thailand (TG -400) and just this year Japan (QF -400), probably my last time in a 74. Great review Paul. Many Qantas 747 flights to remember. My first brought me to Australia many years ago (from Ireland/LHR via bangkok, I was sitting so far down the back I was almost in the baggage hold. Thankfully iv had a few upstairs too. Have probably my last in a few weeks to SFO upstairs. Great work on the Dom flight from the F lounge, a perk I utilise myself.

      Yep, I would have taken the flight just for the 747 so the fact that we departed from T1 sealed the deal! :) I'm sure I won't retain platinum next year so I need to take advantage of it while I can!

    First B747 flight was Sydney to Melbourne in 1999... to visit a girlfriend. Ah. I was off to China for work last month so I took the route via HKG so I could have what I believe will be a final farewell on the Queen. Sat down the back on the green seats with the tiny tv screens. But loved it. Ended the trip in the cockpit. That was on the ‘Philip Island’.

    I haven't flown on a Qantas 747, but I have been on 5 of their A380s! Three return trips in the Queen of the Skies with other carriers though: London to San Francisco (1989 Pan Am -200), London to New York (2002 BA -400 and upgraded to the upper deck on the return!) and then London to Seattle (2007 BA -400)

    Flew Qantas in 2006, 747 excellent service, excellent view out of the window, especially at night had wonderful views of cities at night. I kept the the window shades up all night because I'm not a small bloke. Last time I flew out it was a 787 run by Brunei International. Absolutely awful, that gel is horrible, no view out of the window at night. QANTAS 747 everytime for me. I might be taking a flight to Australia in a few months, I think I'll try for a QANTAS A380 at least it goes into Melbourne and there are actually window blinds.

    VH-OJA set the distance record for the longest nonstop flight by a commercial airline in 1989, London to Sydney. However, that record was broken by Airbus' World Ranger A340 in 1993, which flew Paris to Auckland. Apparently, a 777-200LR currently holds the record. I was working with Qantas in 1989 and followed VH-OJA along her journey with great pride and amazement. Sadly, Airbus didn't generate the same interest. The 747 is definitely the Queen of the Skies, and rightly so :)

      That would be fascinating although quite sad. I was watching a doco (Living in the age of airplanes) last night and felt sad seeing all of these 747s falling apart in one of those aircraft grave yards (unsure if it was Mojave or not.)

So much history and to see them wither away like this is most saddening. And in the link, the very first video I saw of yours, is VH-OJT. ua-cam.com/video/lJUiUaMXi9M/v-deo.html

    Hi Paul, How on earth did you manage to find out ahead of time that Qantas scheduled the 747-400 on SYD-BNE (and that it departed from SYD T1!?) Is it as simple as checking the routes each week and hoping to get a day off from work? For a bit of nostalgia I've pondered jumping on one of the 747-400 operated SYD-PER flights you mentioned. But I would far prefer to do a day trip such as the one you have done in this video, or the SYD-MEL flight you took a while back. PS the first flight I took on the 747 was back in 1997 flying on JAL. SYD-Tokyo-YVR. Being 12 at the time, the leg room and recline was ample.

    You care a lot about capturing the flight experience. In footage with such a focus on takeoff it would be best to keep horizons horizontal with respect to the frame. The camera will need to be rotated to compensate for the angle of the climb. This will actually reveal the angle of the climbout to the viewer.

    • @PaulStewartAviation
      @PaulStewartAviation  6 років тому +2

      Hi mate, it would be difficult to keep the camera angle horizontal to the horizon and the wingtip may get out of frame. While I see your point, it seems that most people prefer I keep the camera still.
