If I listen to a Messiah recording that's old-school, I want it to be REALLY old-school and sound awesome, like this.

Although this aria has been sung by mezzos and countertenors, it begs to be sung by a bass or baritone, and Jerome Hines's rich and powerful basso voice does full justice to this number.

Klemperer chose the tempi, not Hines.

I would believe tempi, etc. would be an agreed-on collaboration between artists. With extended runs throughout, experience indicates vocal artists and conductor most likely agreed-on these during & perhaps even prior-to rehearsals.
'Old School' or not, This Recording, along with my teachers, Sam Shaffer & Mark Owen Davis are my models for preparation, even though I cannot hope to sound anything close to J.Hines or M.O.Davis/Sam Sheffer, The Masters😅!!!

Could be but someone strategically placed the slight accelerando in exactly the right places for help in breath control.

I tend to feel that the slower tempo lend gravity to the piece and to Jerome's voice.

@Bryan Doane I prefer this tempo. North America has a tendency to take everything off to the Campton Races.

Могучий голос Хайнса не должен звучать как колоратурный басок, хотя его подвижности можно только позавидовать.
