  • On Sunday, December 15, 2019, a new roadmap, the K20, came into force. And the biggest change in this roadmap is that all international trains between Copenhagen and Hamburg now run via Funen and Jutland instead of via the crossing between Rødby and Puttgarden. This is the end of trains on ferries in Denmark. Ever since May 14, 1963, when the ferry connection opened as part of the Bird Flight Line, there has been a ranking of trains aboard the ferries in Rødby and Puttgarden.
It is precisely because of the large railroad work that will be connected to the Fehmarn connection that it is more difficult to drive this road to Hamburg. Both in Germany and in Denmark, the lanes are closed several times and replaced by train buses for long periods, which is why DSB chooses to run the trains via the Great Belt, so that the passengers avoid the hassle. And because the trains now only stop in Ringsted, Odense, Kolding and Padborg, travel time has been a little shorter by driving this detour. Only when the Fehmarn tunnel is completed sometime in the future will trains return to this direct route, also called the bird flight line. This is the end of trains on ferries in Denmark.
