You deserve your Award Mark. We appreciate all the tutorials and the time you spend teaching the rights & wrongs so that we advance our own skills. Thank you Mark. Well deserved. Neville. J.
Congrats on the Silver Playback Plaque Mark. One of the best parts of Wednesday is watching your videos. Ever since I started watching you I’ve learned so much more about photography.
Thank you Mark for this informative and helpful video! I always appreciate your tips! Your videos are easy to follow. The pace at which you speak makes it easy to follow!
Awesome video this week. Congrats on the button. Your videos are always so informative and the content is clear. I look forward to each week. Thanks and keep up the great work.
hey Mark, great learning on how to use polariser and filter. Your videos are always bring something new to learn about and most importantly... from bottom of your heart. thanks a lot!!
One note I'd like to make is that when you place reflection shots right in the middle, "ignoring" the rule of thirds, I think you actually can still use the rule of thirds. IMO, the center point of the reflection is not a focal point usually, but rather the objects being reflected are. When you see a mountain reflection shot, how much time do you spend looking at the point where the water meets land? probably almost never. Therefore, you can still follow the rule of thirds because you can place, say, the mountains in a way where their sunny peaks appear on the top and lower third of the frame simultaneously due to the reflection. You aren't breaking any rules because the central point of reflection is not being used as your subject.
I'll say it AGAIN, You ARE the man!!!!! The way you go about explaining the different techniques is SO easy to follow and understand. I've guided a couple of people I know who are just starting out in photography to your channel so they get the BEST advice and training in photography. I also told them to not forget to subscribe, follow and click on that bell 🛎 Once again thank you SO much for your time and effort you put into all these videos Mark. OH and a HUGE congratulations on your Silver Play button 🍻🎉
Another great video Mark. Congratulations on your 100K+Subs and receiving your Silver Play Button. Keep up the great work. Look forward to your videos/vlogs.
I'm flexing in the mirror, watching my own reflection ,while looking at this great reflection tutorial. Thanks Mark ! And congrats with the Silver Play Button!
Good video and congratulations, Mark. I love the ambiance of your videos. May I ask, what do you use for your purple background lighting, and what is that cool yellow light on your desk?
Well done Mark on your award, i think the reason i subscribed is because you obviously know your stuff, but you also get straight to the start of your videos and they are presented very well, personally i can't do with long intro's i always skip to the main event of others, keep up the great creative content.Regards Neil in UK.
Congrats on the 100k. This was a great video, I can’t wait to practice some of these techniques I’ve always been fascinated by reflection photography’s!!
Congratulations on 100K! You have earned it with your thoughtful and well produced content. Your video is timely as I am trying to decide on a variable ND filter vs separate ND filters and stacking as needed. If you have time I would appreciate your advice. Thank you, and thank you for your channel.
Congrats for the Silver Play Button! I started paying special attention to landscape photography a few months ago, and the information you share is super interesting and useful!!! Thank you!
Hi Mark, greatly appreciated those useful tips. Photographing reflections are some of my favourite nature captures. I like the sometimes abstract results I get. Great topic and well delivered as you always do. Big cheers Mark for your well deserved UA-cam plaque, quite an achievement. Congrats!
Very nice video about reflections. Images are awesome, though I have already seen in some videos of you. Yosemite National park reflections are great images. Thanks for your valuable video. Bonus tip is informative one.
no problem with a thumbs up, thanks for all the tips, they come handy for sure. And congrats again for your achievement so far, well deserved. can't wait for your next video
Good tips. I love shooting reflections. While flat water is great for mirror like images, I also like having a ripple in the water to give it that impressionist painterly feel.
you have so many great photos, When did you know, that you was ready to travel out out home zone. meaning trying to get the most of your environment by search out hidden locations
Thank you for posting. Lots of very valuable tips. The only point I would quibble with is no. 5. Where I live it seams that the sky's are clear or overcast. Under these situations cutting out the sky is the way to go (sometimes using negative space works well) and I often go for the 16 by 9 or 10. However if there is a good foreground you can tilt your camera down so that the reflection and foreground takes up the majority of the picture.
Very interesting & congrats on the 100k award. Fully agree with Tip #1 which always seemed logical to me from the outset. Particularly interested to try out your bonus tip and to very the polariser more. I guess you could use 2 images with different polariser settings and blend them?
Thank you for the great channel, Mark! The timing of this vid couldn't have been more perfect for me. It was fresh in my mind when I got out at blue hour on a local lake the next morning and captured what I think is my strongest image year to date (helped some by the fact I've already sold a print for sure :) ) The version I ended up going with had my focus set on the reflection of the moon in the water (with my glass at its f11 sweet spot of course).
Reflections and sunsets, my favourite subjects. There is just something magical to hunt the moment with perfect water and perfect sky. Maybe it never happens, but the chase is still fun. And no huge mountains or waterfalls here, so reflections adds something to our flat scenery
Congratulations, Mark..........you surely earned that recognition! After your first year or year and a half when you went full-time photography, you published your revenue stream. Are you planning anything like it at this point? I don't blame you if you don't.
Really INFORMATIVE and GREAT video! It is a coincidence that I recently just took a photo (of a river flowing in a forest) incorporating reflections :)
Great tips Mark, especially liked the filter advice. I try and offer similar advice about polarisers on my workshops and camera club lectures. Polarisers aren’t there to kill the reflection it’s about controlling the reflections and highlights to get that natural look. Something I like in the example images you showed us.
Love this angle, man. Don’t think I’ve seen you use this shot in your studio much. I also see what you did there with the reflection of the salt lamp lol. Keep crushing it friend. Congrats on 100k!
Great tips as usual. I shoot a lot of astro on the beach and sometimes struggle with star reflections on the ground. Can I use all of these techniques for astro as well or anything different? Thanks!
Mark, As I started to watch your reflection video I had three questions, do I use a polarizer? Best time of day is best? And lastly was is it better to be high or low? Thank you, you answered all my questions. Congratulations on your 🥇 award.
Great video. I love reflection photos. I have a question regarding filters. If you are using a polarizing filter and an ND filter, is there an order as to which should go on the lens first? My thought would be to put the polarizer on first so you can set how much polarizing before it is too dark to see. But I have never combined them before.
What would you say your total useable/good photos are compare to how many you take? For every shot or scene I am trying to capture I seem to find myself taking an upwards of 40 photos total at different angles and really only getting a couple (if any) of good photos that have solid composition/exposure/etc. that I feel are useable.
Ah! It’s comforting to hear that my skills are in some type of normal range, if there was such a thing. That also reduces the pressure of getting the great shot. Thanks Mark!
Thank you ALL for my Silver Play Button!!

For every shot or scene I am trying to capture I seem to find myself taking an upwards of 40 photos total at different angles and really only getting a couple (if any) of good photos that have solid composition/exposure/etc. that I feel are useable.
I'd say only about 5% maybe of my photos ending up being images I consider keepers.
Ah! It’s comforting to hear that my skills are in some type of normal range, if there was such a thing.
That also reduces the pressure of getting the great shot.
