With the 180 and constant speed prop it has to perform very well

The AV-30 is a great tool and now the next time I see one in a Airplane I’ll know what this is capable of doing

Correction I looked at my picture the AOPA 170 is a constant speed prop IO-370. Your 170 had the engine controls all in a row. AOPA 170 had the prop control underneath below the throttle control .

What is cool is you now have your own AOA indicator. It would be cool to see how your dedicated AOA (Alpha I believe) compares to the AOA on the AV30. Furthermore, what I am interested in seeing broadly is can either of these AOA's somehow distinguish between a skidding turn and a Slipping turn? The AV30 is probless, and uses some fancy algorighms.. I would imagine this approach would be better to distinguish between a slip and skid given you could program it to tell the difference and the alarms should be programmed to be very different given that consequences are very different :) Sorry for this long request, but you seem to be the only true youtuber who is an AOA fan :) .. plus you have the two tools as well!! :) A video on this would be awesome and maybe might save a life or two :) Cheers!.

The problem with AV30 is that it drifts more than my old and tired vacuum DG. It works great as an attitude indicator, but without magnetometer, the DG is worthless, you’ll be correcting it for compass heading all the time if you are making any kind of turns at all.

I can confirm this. The last time i flew with an AV30 i was inbound to KICT and it had me indicated at a NW heading when I was direct inbound to the 19L approach. It drifts really badly.

@@Keys879 I have heard they have a fix for this now?

I am not seeing this problem, mine was from December 2021, maybe they fixed it?

@@motoadveBackcountry182 There have been hardware and firmware upgrades to the AV30C that added an internal magnetometer and from reports from friends have gotten the heading drift down to the level of a good vacuum DG. I have installed them in a project plane but have not flown with them yet. Also, uAvioncis is coming out with an external Magnetometer (now available for the AV30E). I plan to prewire for this. It has been taking them about a year + to get additional features approved through the FAA for the certified version.
Also, it looks like Jose is using GPS data for the DG, which while does not exactly replace a good magnetic reference, almost makes the drift issue a mute point.

@@motoadveBackcountry182 maybe so, maybe they fixed it, but I paid for my 2 AV30s in 2020 and it was sold to me as a certified instrument. There’s certain criteria for DG allowable drift, something like no more than 5 degrees every 15 min or something like that. Mine drifted 30 degrees by the time you depart the pattern. When I contacted Uavionics, they basically told me to take a hike. They did not stand behind their product. Shame on Uavionics and shame on the FAA who gave it certification and allowed sales in the first place. Not acceptable in aviation. Never again will I buy uavionics stuff, they lost all credibility.

What is your empty weight and CG now? My Javelin tank helps with the CG some. I have put 5 gallons in it get myself back in CG with a heavy passenger. My plane is 1498 with the rear seat out and a CG of 40.4.

I would if I did not had the Alpha Systems AoA already installed, which I have used for more than 2,000hrs.
