- In this episode I'm gonna try to build a low tech SSTO capable of landing on Minmus and returning, but first we're gonna need to take a billionaire to orbit and orbit the Mun... No big deal right?

I always just use some drogue chutes for breaking sstos on return, that way it doesnt matter if I come zooming in on the LZ or not.
They also just look awesome when deployed going down the runway!

@@smooneychad would be great, remember that all planets in the kcalbeloh system are also reverse named
Something that can help with the wing construction is deciding what wing shape you want, and add whatever fuel tanks, landing gear, or whatever else you need. Then rebuild it with the wing part that is in the middle and attach everything to it. Once that's done, you can now just rotate that one wing piece and the whole wing will rotate with it.
I wanna see electric props on Eve! Otherwise its a bit of an escalation and you should probably do Duna first lol

Thanks for the heads up! I haven’t tested an approach yet like in the video but adjusting the planetshine settings made Minmus and the Mun much less washed out and overly bright (it’s the vacuum brightness setting for those interested)

I found out
parallax 2.0 is responsible for the mun getting brighter when you get close to it

The second you said you'd use the horizontal stabilizer as an airbrake I knew what was coming, you're basically locking them in place so you're left without yaw control.

Keep an eye out for tiny rocks on surfaces. You can pick them up with a kerbal, and they give a good chunk of science. They are pretty easy to spot, especially on the minmus flats. Every planet and moon has them just keep in mind they aren't found in all biomes.

Hey thanks! Really glad you like the vids!! I was originally gonna add Restock AND TURD to this playthrough but found out that they apparently don’t work together, which is a bit of a bummer
Your planes get unbalanced during re-entry because the fuel is consumed! You should consider this when making any plane, but i have some tips:
- In the hangar, empty all the tanks (fuel and oxidizer), balance the plane, return all the fuel and oxidizer (do each separately) find a way it ends up with the same center of mass. Usually, some fuel tanks will not use full capacity, your job is then to find the combination that has more fuel;
- Use the fuel on the nose of the plane as a mid-flight balancer, set it to not be consumeable and, when you need to move the center of mass, transfer it.

Rcs build aid shows full and empty com, and they were in the same spot
@@Trailmaker. In this case, I still recommend using 1 or 2 tanks, with no consumable fuel, to balance the plane by the transfer of the fuel
I also find it better to make the plane nose heavy during re-entry, one of the problems he had

That was actually what the original plan for this mod pack was, way back before my aircraft only ksp2 series! The series was going to be called “Inside” and I still may do it if I can find the time (would be normal ksp with rockets and everything but never leaving IVA after taking off from the KSC)
17:33 Bradley Whistance moment but 17:57 without pretending it was intentional. He always does! XD The most efficient takeoff is tangential to the surface, so he does that whenever he can, but I'm not sure it's enough to explain all his close passes.
Come to think of it, I probably should have played it all off as intentional🤔 (nearly) Slapping into Minmus hills in the name of efficiency! lol

As weird as it sounds, the air breaks needs to be the other way around.
They should deploy "outwards" rather than "inwards" like you did.
No idea why, but i had the same problem and that fixed it

For the moon getting brighter, Check if youre running Stock Visual Terrain. This mod replaces the planet textures, but if youre running other mods like parallax on top of it, the ground textures might not match the space textures.
Tip for engines: less is more. 1 terrier would give far more dv than 5 terriers
Once you’re in orbit this is absolutely true, but with one terrier the TWR would have been 0.12 which would never get to orbit with this SSTO.
@@smooneychad I was thinking 3 would work, while of course I dont know the craft statistics I think that should be enough to get to orbit with the extra wing tanks
according to Mike Aben, that manuver is called the 'jebediah manuver'.
You should check out atmospheric autopilot. You can use it to allow control like the f22 raptor has. It let's you fly like a real plane with its fly by wire and makes planes just that much better

I think you can enable crossfeed in decouplers and set tank priority to have drop tanks without fuel lines.
The mün getting brighter is parallax changing the texture of the mün as you get closer.
Mmm if that’s what is causing it then I guess I’ll just have to get used to it, parallax is far too cool looking

you should go for eve cause wings on duna will be more of an issue but youll probably want to how to make a propeller plane
Loving the series thus far and it's inspired me to do more career mode! I just have a question, how much ram do you have? just OPM alone eats ram but I wanted to add kcalbeloh too. I only have 16 gigs so I want to know if this is possible
Sorry for the late reply. I’ve got 64gb (upgraded it to keep from crashing with very high part counts on other projects) but I’m pretty sure 16gb should be enough for both packs, as I used to run OPM,MPE and few others on 8gb. Though it does all probably depend on your other specs as well. Thanks for watching though I hope that helps! :D
the mun gets brighter because of scatterer and other visual mods when the surface loads in
9:19 so every planet and moon have day and night, so it was night right there before then it became day basically

SSTOs are cool and all, but once you get out of the atmosphere its basically a rocket. So i wanna know can you do a fly by and return from minmus using atmospheric engines only? youd have to get all the speed you need in atmosphere AND do it in exactly the right place to just to encounter minmus

What if you make prop plane with all the other ssto parts, use the props to go high up, then detach them and go on like 10km in the air full on fuel, it would more efficient would it not?
It would be cool to try that out as I’ve never seen it done really, kinda like an Eve ssto sort of thing!

The edge of the rocket nozzle has to clear the edge of the jet engines, even by a pixel. Or, the Kerbal way - trial and error

somewhat overbuilt. you can get a minmus landing and back with an ssto of 1 panther and 2 terriers without stacking tricks. Enough to bring early game experiments, including science module.

I'm very confused on space planes. I have the exact plane you made for the landing on Minmus, with the exact fuel count but slightly lighter since I don't know all the internals you put on the craft, but I can NEVER get my plane up to the speed you achieve even with the after burners on. What did your flight slope look like for this? I tried 10 degrees, 15, and 20, but none of them ever let me get above Mach 1, and most of the time I fall very short of hitting that speed. As I said, I have the exact same plane (maybe my wings aren't exactly the same angle but idk for sure) and I can't even get close.

I didn’t have crossfeed unlocked yet, you need to unlock the fuel lines before you can enable crossfeed on decouplers. Luckily I finally have that unlocked so, yay droptanks! :D

So far all of the crafts have been stock besides the paint job and occasional cameras, so it kinda has been stock though that’s gonna be changing very soon. But I definitely would do a complete stock play through if I had the time!

But thanks, oh and by the way i have a suggestion... try and make your own version of the British Space Shuttle prototype, of course it would have to take off from the runway, and an SSTO to put stuff in orbit! You could make entire space stations in just a few orbits, with refuelling stations on most planets and/or moons! You could go anywhere in the Kerbol system!

1 note you keep reading your current total science instead of the science earned for the missions. The layout of that info has always bugged me because i would see the total and be like "sweet I got 1000 science from that mission" when really i just had like 900 i hadn't spent quite yet and only earned like 100 so i would leave that screen expecting to see my total at 1900 and be REALLY disappointed
