I'm 59, and Engineer Tech IV, and a great ET III and cable fabricator. I'm rock solid at diagnostics for the most part.
Still your comprehensive knowledge of these amps and components just blow me away. You exhibit decades of knowledge that only comes with time or amazing awareness/comprehension. Seriously you are a freakin genius, Sam. Seriously keep growing your knowledge because your awareness is going to create amazing things no one else has thought of before.
You need to sit on what you learn on these amps that can help you to create the ultimate amps. Patent your intellectual property and Trademark your designs. You will be set for life.
The fact that you didn't edit out the mistakes says so much about you as a person! Your a beast, love the content and keep the raw footage coming in we absolutely love it .....cheers!

Valuable lesson learned when we are trying to fix something. Don’t assume everything is perfect the first time; recheck all of your steps just in case.
Used to repair PBX 's.replaced and Reversed an 8 pin ic switch for the PSU . Was like an arc welder when plugged in.
Lesson I learned making a guide of my 1200/1v3 amp that is the amp in page photo, I made the booboo of slipping and arcing the rectifiers together with my multimeter probe. Talk about a loud ass boom….. luckily I have fast hands. Everything is ok, and I still have my guide for repair. Be careful with high voltage amps, and do, use fuses and the proper equipment to test high voltage equipment.
we've all had to eat humble pie at some point, great vid. Once received a EXO phone system chassis from a distributor, didn't check the voltage selector on the back and assumed it would be set correctly being it came from an in country distributor. Plugged it in and my heart sank when the magic smoke started flowing. Checked the back and the selector was set to 110v. Thankfully i hadn't put any cards into it so only had to pull down the power supply and replace the unhappy bits inside.

my story - had a lighting circuit in the shop they had used all black wiring through a double pole switch. i was removing the 8 foot light fixtures and had cut away from the back of the switch - what i believed were the runs going to both light banks. however, there was a piggy backed wire in a junction box farther up that i did not see and this left one of the wires live. when moving them with my cutters - it grounded. melted half of my cutters off and welded the metal handle to the junction box. didnt trip a breaker but they were 50A breakers.
To make a long story short-ish: I accidentally shorted my RCA inputs on an old Pioneer amp. I ended up replacing the output mosfets which fixed it (I tested it outside the case). In my excitement after getting it working I forgot to cut the legs on the new mosfets. I reassembled it into the metal case and I'm sure you can guess what happened. The amp "blew" again but it took out more than just the mosfets. It still sits unfixed to this day, but I haven't given up, I'm just taking a break from it lol.

I once repaired my amp and turned it on and it seemd like it worked fine again. then the fan kicked on and the solder i bent up slowly came down due to the vibration of the fan. Shorted random bits and bobs on the board. Took a lot of time to find all the parts the solder touched and killed.
Keep up those videos been bingewatching them in the last few. Actually thinking about design my own Class-D amp just to try it out.
I have done a lot of troubleshooting over the years and it always comes down to the basics, I always assume I could have messed up, and whether or not i did it seems like the issue gets fixed a lot faster. Love your videos!
I work in IT and was troubleshooting a server that wasn't coming online. This was at a major data center that serviced a large metro area (we're talking 8 million people).
Long story short, I put my toner on a line that took down four central stations and killed telephone and data for about 3 million people.
I never did admit to what I did as they would've fired my ass for it. Made the news and everything many many years ago.
Best part though: I learned to be just a little bit more careful and to not let someone else rush me when I'm trying to do my work. Still make mistakes but none that affect millions of people at a time (that I'm aware of).
Not an amp repair or even a tech repair,
but I once had a French horn with a small bit of a scrub brush lodged inside one of the rotary valves, which meant I couldn't even get the valve out to remove the stuck brush. I tried using a tool that's basically a screw soldered onto a long rod, to try to get it to catch on the brush so I could pull it out, I ended up screwing straight through the other side of the valve casing 😬 it left a hole that surely would've made part of the horn unplayable
Luckily, I was able to close it up a bit by hammering down the metal that the screw tore up, then I sealed it with some soft solder. It was (mostly) unnoticeable afterward!
Easily done. I do at least 10 stupid things B4 breakfast. B+ is another name for Vcc +, an American term, in UK we use HT = high tension = high voltage. SW is short for switch, B+ SW = positive rail switch. It's a good idea to keep a notebook as a record of jobs, so easy to forget, a record stops you disappearing up your own arse again, hopefully. Yep… happened to me on my first ever diagnosis. scope was not isolated and a giant short of -83V to ground destroyed an entire channel (which was already kind of buggy but then this made it much worse)… also a big BOOM right at my face🤣
Ironically it got the amp out of complete protection and allowed the good channel to start working perfectly fine again lol
Was servicing a five thousand dollar computerized sewing machine. It was a hot dry day. "ZAP" the static charge hurt me and my wallet. Found a used motherboard for four hundred US dollars. The lesson was, touch metal ground before petting the circuits. Another thing, those ribbon cables are a pain in the butt to get just right. Especially for touch screens.
Working in an MTX 1501D and didnt notice a small piece if solder on the backside of one of the new 50N20 output mosfets (low side rail). It shorted the drain to the heat sink and annhilated the low side power regulation circuit and toasted a trace as well.

Awesome video. I just went back the other day and watched one of your old quarter wave videos where you were sitting at a table outside talking about T line quarter waves. Back when I was doing electronics repairs I had a VCR that blew up a bunch of DC capacitors in the power supply circuit on the bench. Because of some moron I worked with dropped some stray solder balls on the board. It was like a paper confetti bomb went off in the workshop.
Last week working on a Skar RP2000.1d that had smoked all of its power supply and most of the output section. Stripped everything off that was blown, then gave the amp 12v and ground and was promptly met with sparks and smoke!!! (In my haste i had reversed the polarity of 12v and ground!!!!!!)
Sooooo 8 2X and 8 2T sot23 transitors later i try again. This time no smoke but only a quick pulse of switching then nothing.
A quick talk with perry babbin and my suspicion was confirmed bad tl494 as pin 14 was only outputting 3.81v instead of something close to 5v AND the protection circuitry was looking for rail voltage. Now the power supply is fully operational but now im habing problems with the PWM switching signal being stron enough at the gate pads. Output buffer transistors are good. Octocoupters appear to be good. The output of the switching wave from the TL072 to the LM6172 has good voltage but varies all over the place.....
Love seeing ya put a full bridge amp that isn't from Brazil on the bench. So many guys knock Brazilian full bridge without realizing brands they know and like are using them.
I remember when you had 2 of those pioneer 12's doing work in your car.
Can't even tell you how many wire cutters and screw drivers I have welded with. I once tripped out a power company fuse on a pole starting a chiller that was grounded. Took down power to the whole building.
My latest head-scratcher: I put 2 strips of foam under the bottom plate of the amp along the rail that the screws go into to both raise the bottom plate away from the tall rail capacitors and to hopefully nullify some resonance from the plate. I also put a strip on top of the rail caps to stop the tops rubbing on the bottom plate. But after doing so, I got bad signal noise and turn-on pop. I finally tried the amp without the bottom plate and it was fine but even after removing the foam from the caps it persisted, meaning it turns out that the bottom plate is somehow actually closer to the PCB with the foam, and must be pushing the backside into the chassis, shorting out the negative rail. Luckily the amp is fine

Get the proton fluid filmed/oil sprayed if you don’t want it to rust away. After rust repairs of course.
One time I needed to replace old leaky caps and I thought if I had bigger caps it give the amp more head room and I changed them and the caps popped !!
I work on my own laptop. I have broken a handful of parts but one big take away is to never work when tired.
I removed a fuel tank on a chevy pickup years ago, removed the old pump, set it on the bench, grabbed the new one, set it on the bench, and the proceeded to reinstall the bad fuel pump. Then scratched my head for a while trying to figure out why I still didn't have fuel pressure. Oi. Newbie mistakes!!!
My buddy put a wheel on hand tight while he went to grab his impact, got distracted, wife drove car and wheel came off on a steep hill. Very hard to jack up a car when it's all the way on the ground LOL.
Got a jet ski for really cheap because when they installed the starter solenoid they lost the insulator and then energizing the starter sent starter amperage through the entire ground harness. melted all the way to the stator at the flywheel LOL.
Fixing a laptop that I was given with no PSU, so was using a 2 pin adapter pushed into the end connector of another PSU I had. Worked fine until I reconnected it and didn't double check polarity. There was no protection and I had to replace mosfets on the motherboard.
OOOPS that I did once was.... Start soldering on a amp that was still on. Had my foot on the deadman pedal and never turned the amp or the power supply off. Instant FIREWORKS.......

Real Man shit right here still posting this, lol. My flib was thinking 1405 were output FETs snd the 4868 were power supply FETs ...put power to board and killed a 4868 but that was it ...can’t believe I did that, it was my first time working with those FETs 😅
Biggest mistake is not verifying that the description of the fault matches reality, before taking the device to pieces and looking for a fault that may not be present (you may need to remove a cover if something has 'blown up', just to look (or sniff) for damage). Years ago, I took something apart to try and figure out the problem, and finding nothing obviously wrong, was stumped. If I had only checked the fuse in the plug first; D'OH!
The other good one is totally re-assembling something without testing first, and then finding you have to take it to pieces again (sometimes a nightmare process) for another attempt.
Happens to the very best of us. It was still entertaining. I enjoy the chase the veers game

lol ops. me and a friend was putting a mother board in a pc case and we forgot to put the stand off post which go in the back metal plate for the case and the back of the mother board so when he pluged it in it made a nice mess lol and costy :( lol

ok, I will try to remake my bigest stupidity of my life. I had to repair a technics su-x955 stereo. it needed a separate cable to power it and I soldered a cable directly on the 220v switch.... why? becase I saw the same brown and blue colors of neutral and fase that I had... and bang, that was a big short I didn't see first time. I have blown the switch becase where I had to repair this amp, there were no fuses or protection circuits. so there was a big darn pop and huge smoke out of that switch. so yes, after so many years of practice I did manage to destroy some stuff!

Never wire a relay the wrong way for headlights. You will take out the headlights. The High beams, and the BCM, and the ECU that tells the BCM what to do on that circuit.
Ordered parts for a Server. They sent the wrong one. Did not look at the connector at the end.
Server go POOF!

these videos are fucking great. the live streams are fun but the short vids with editing i suspect will open your channel up to far more views. i checked shipping through DHL from my work and found about 80 bucks to ship an amp to bristol UK. not sure how far away that is from you. the amp is either a Directed Electronics (the car alarm company) its a rebranded/modded orion from back when they sold those OR a HCCA 5000. it was pulled apart a long time ago and is missing components/burned up caps/fets. it would be a bit of a shit show to repair which is why i think it could make a great live stream
80 bucks shipping, then 45 bucks import tax and duty, then 80 bucks shipping back, then probably similar import tax your end, and before I've even touched it there's at least $250 on the table.

I am confused. How did the cable get installed backwards before you got it? Didn’t you hook it up before you started to diagnose the original issue? Obviously the customer didn’t send you an amp that was working to be fixed.
