This performance is a true stand out. It hits me in a peculiar way, like much of their art does. But this piece in particular is so strange, beautiful, and sincere. The Residents were really hitting a high mark here.
Brought my girlfriend to their show in ´85 at the old Metropolis in Montréal. The fact she liked the show was one of the reasons that made me propose to her a year later... (she said yes).
I'll be seeing them in February. I still think Mole Show, Cube-E, Eskimo, Wormwood, Freakshow and Icky Flix were my favourites - But Cube-E tops them all for me, with Freakshow coming in just behind. I always wished I could have had a chance to see this show live.
This great concert was recorded in 1989 in Munich at the OFF BEAT NIGHT (german TV-Channel Tele 5). I am glad to have it on VHS tape. The whole show was called Buckaroo Blues. So sad I was not there to see them live. But I had another chance to see the Residents in 2001 in Moers during a Jazz Festival with their Icky Flix show :)
Looking forward to Cherry Red and The Residents bringing all of the Cube E recordings and DVDs together when it's turn comes up on the pREServed series.
One of my all-time favorite performances by them. I *finally* got to see them this year, and though a very small venue, I felt so blessed. I also realized just how *physical* the lead singer's performances are, and have been. Though no longer in his early years, he has so much passion and energy, it's incredible and he's gotta keep in shape just to perform and tour like that.
the first band to scare me and was lucky enough to get into in 83 maybe,i saw the hello skinny vidio on public access tv,it gave me nightmares,but then their 13 year record came out with that kick ass version of jai house rock? they have lost my attention with their last few record,but i never said i was perfect,and thhey are a band that yoiu have to give your ears too
Says the homophobic computer nerd who sees sexuality in everything he watches on youtube. Maybe get a girlfriend to release some of that built up sexual frustration? Or you can continue watching random videos and projecting homosexuality on them to make you feel more "hetero" if that's what floats your boat I guess! BTW I think the videos you have uploaded are about as "gay" as they get :o)
@catrileo68 - The residents are always re-making their songs in different versions. This version I think is only on the Kettles Of Fish... Box set and also I think in the early special UWEB series "buckaroo blues". Both are live versions, Im not sure, possibly this exact recording.

I am a moderate fan of the Residents, and I have to say I think this is one of their best songs (if not the best); I have fond memories of listening to this with my Uncle as a kid. Thanks for bringing back the good times.

@catrileo68 - This is only live unfortunately, you can get it in the CUBE E boxset, theere is also some similar I think in buckaroo blues, but that was only a limited ralph club release (uncle willies?)
I discover them thanks to a friend of mine who was investigating about Primus and he found that their principal influence was The residents, after that we saw the Third Reich 'n Roll video , man i've never hear something like this (Sorry for the english)

I saw Cube E from the front row of the Barrymore in Madison back in 90. I'm Happy to see this portion again.
Saw it in Chicago back then, too. discovered them for myself on MTV in 1985 showing Mole Show. I was like what???🎉 So happy/lucky to see Cube E live.
