The Problem With Adobe Firefly Is BIGGER Than You Think!

  • Adobe recently released Firefly, their new AI Image Generation Platform-- and there is a big problem with their AI Art Creator. It has nothing to do with the image quality, prompting, or Image Control, but is rather a much larger problem about the future relationship between AI Art and Artists.
    In this video I'm going to take a brief overview of Adobe Firefly, and then chat a bit about how ethical Firefly really is...Does Adobe really have the interests of its users in mind with Firefly? Let's find out!

      Adobe keeps treading VERY lightly in their verbiage, saying it will be "likely" to be integrated into photoshop/illustrator etc. To me, that says: "we're planning to, but if there is a lot of backlash, we'll pull the plug."
      Given that I haven't seen a lot of bad press or negativity thrown their way, I'd say it's pretty likely.

    Adobe has said they're working on a way to compensate stock contributors. I agree, stock is (mostly) dead. The remaining uses will be documentary footage, and images that need to be technically accurate. If you need the interior of an operating room, for example, and you're conscientious, you don't want to trust an AI to get the details right.

    • @TheoreticallyMedia

      So I was in one of the Midjourney Office Hours Q&As where someone asked if they have trained medical reference images, like the illustrations.
      That’s one instance where I’m pretty sure it isn’t a good idea to go full AI image!
      …well, that and doctors would keep wondering why we all don’t have extra fingers…
      But yeah, those that were making a small income off Stock Images and Music? Of which I was one. That meager income is now lost,
      I’ll look into the Adobe Stock compensation statement. I don’t want to be overly cynical, but I do feel that if it happens, it’ll be one time and more of a gesture than actual compensation.

      Stock-- I don't know, it's a small part of the pie, I do know a handful of people who made a significant cut in that system, but the vast majority are at about the same income level as your mother.
      But even then, those marketplaces (particularly music) were trending into larger corporate owned channels. I think that's the biggest trick when it comes to making a living as an artist: Being able to spot an opening and getting in before the giants show up and gobble it!

    • @markborok4481
      @markborok4481 Рік тому +2

      @@TheoreticallyMedia Stock was always bad for artists. The stock house takes a cut, and fewer artists get work. Not to mention bland, generic photographs that often aren't the exact match for what's being illustrated (e.g. an article on outsourcing illustrated with a piece of generic business clip art). But at least Adobe will want to keep its stock artists happy, the more its AI has to draw on, the better its output will become. If I were them, I would merge the two; use the stock art as a source of "image to image" generation. You buy a stock image and use AI to alter it to your specific needs. Everyone wins.

    I have subscribed to your channel and love your your mid-journey videos a lot.
    This video, I am surprised you got it so wrong.
    Mid Journey is great for creating awesome images but it doesn’t have any real main stream applications.
    Photoshop is all about real world applications. Generative fill is a 100x more useful and powerful than midjourney is when it comes to professional application. Plus the other tools like remove, select subject etc besides everything photoshop already is, makes it far more creative than midjourney is.
    You made a snide remark about photoshop images being “stock photography” … if you think about it, that’s a compliment, because stock photos are real world pictures.
    If I am making a brochure and need a particular model, looking and wearing a particular outfit, I can do that. It even takes existing images and poses the model in different ways.
    You got this terribly wrong in my view.
    Mid-journey and Photoshop (Fire Fly is now Generative fill within photoshop) are two entirely different things

    • @TheoreticallyMedia
      @TheoreticallyMedia  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, I’ll admit- this video is a little dated and came out just as Firefly launched (Pre-Gen fill)- when it looked more like Adobe was going for the standard MJ/Stable Diffusion image generator model. In retrospect, I can see if Gen Fill was the plan all along why it would be so…well, bland for lack of a better term.
      And while I did see that Adobe was talking about profit sharing with those that contributed to Adobe Stock for training the firefly model, I remain skeptical of any corporation (particularly Adobe) who claims to be looking out for the little guy.
      I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Adobe, as you might have picked up!

    I believe that Adobe Firefly will make it much harder for anti-AI people to make their argument. Even without having any artists in my social circle, it was still easy to empathize with their frustration about an AI model using their own creations to replace them. The Adobe situation on the other hand is much harder for me to interpret. While I do understand that some contributors to Adobe Stock would not have accepted the Terms, if they knew AI Art Generators were just around the corner, it seems more like a question about legality, then ethics, which makes it a much less accessible discussion for a layperson, like me.

    • @TheoreticallyMedia
      @TheoreticallyMedia  Рік тому +6

      Well, I think your comment perfectly illustrates Adobe's angle here. They're in a tight bind, because on the one hand AI generated is on the verge of being a massive market, but on the other hand, a great majority of their subscribers are anti-AI. The "Ethics" approach is, to be honest, kind of brilliant. I hope someone got a promotion out of it!
      "Organic? No...GMO Free? No...Oh, Ethical!! YES!" 😂
      But the irony here is that it's still putting a bullet to an artist's head. It's just an ethical bullet?
      And I should say, I'm overstating for the humor. I don't think traditional artists are going anywhere. AI Art is not going to replace anything at my city's museum, nor is anyone going to want to have AI generated images of their wedding day. BUT, this is 100% going to take away a platform that Adobe created which was (small) form of income for a lot of people.
      That is totally their prerogative, as Adobe Stock is their platform, but I do take some issue when they dress themselves up in a white suit to deliver the news.

      @mpjstuff Рік тому +4

      "I do understand that some contributors to Adobe Stock would not have accepted the Terms, if they knew AI Art Generators were just around the corner, it seems more like a question about legality, then ethics," -- isn't it weird that if you didn't give people a real understanding of what you were going to do with their work, that somehow we forget about "ethics" as soon as it's "legal"? Somehow we are trained to think "Oh that's legal" without also knowing it's wrong. Like leveraging assets to bankrupt a company and thousands lose their jobs while a few people get super rich raiding their retirement fund -- it's LEGAL. That said; copyright is dead and the courts are ignoring this fact and the implications. Whether people think it's legal, ethical, or just not being fair -- people will not be able to make a living as an art producer except in very custom situations.

      @@ithurtsbecauseitstrue No, it is not a fear based tactic. "Use it or get left behind", is a factual part of a fast advancing tech- driven creative work environment. You are not nearly the first to face the possible reality of tech replacing you as a creative worker.. Many workers, and professions, have been replaced by new machines throughout history. Those same workers had to either learn how to use those machines, or train for another "in-demand" field. With AI, however, the change is happening at a speed we have not seen before and affecting a broad spectrum of workers and professions, not just one or a few. Ignoring this won't stop it. We can despise it , but it's coming anyway. Those who are going to do well will find out how to use these tools and/or adapt in a way to make themselves still in-demand.

      At the end of the day, the designer/client thing is about relationships. Most clients don’t care how the art was made, they just like the personality of the person selling it to them.
