He goes on about peaking early but he probably has already peaked somewhat In his own life. I want to expand on this comment just in case BG Kumbi is being even 25% serious in this video. tl;dr Kumbi is a better comedian than Sam Hyde because he actually cares about being funny in a technical sense whereas a lot of Sam's work is just discontent expressed in a silly way that only appeals to a very specific audience. Some of Sam's most memorable content is him making fun of dopey people on Kickstarter. I mean, is it funny for him to scream into a half-broken webcam mic about how people are "human cattle" that should be euthanized for asking to be paid for writing silly Minecraft songs? A little, I guess. But the thesis statement or driving idea for most of Sam Hyde’s comedy really seems to be “I was traumatized by going to a liberal arts college in New England.” Poor him. People who call him racist or sexist and all that miss the mark. He’s driven by hatred but not towards people of different genders or races. Just seems like he really, really hates anyone or anything that reminds him even the slightest bit of the stereotypical feminist/liberal art school girls he was surrounded by in college. Probably because he was emotionally abused in a romantic relationship with one, which I think he’s alluded to in multiple early videos. So Sam Hyde IS legitimately funny and talented, but since his comedy doesn’t exist for its own sake and is instead an avenue for him to push back against a thing he hates, it starts to make less and less sense unless you experience the same things he has or try really hard to pretend like you have. People who latched on to Sam’s work when they were teenage boys could read the subtext, but didn’t have the same experiences, so they try to mimic him in really shallow ways that make them look like the worst things Sam is accused of, e.g. being racist, sexist, neo-nazis, etc. His style of comedy is so specific, niche, and inexorable from his identity. If one cares about being funny and thinks that Sam Hyde is the funniest person on Earth, the natural conclusion is to try to act like him, i.e. an ornery and emotionally unstable cynic, convinced that they have the only true understanding of the world. Seriously, I hope BG Kumbi doesn’t think he’s uniquely embarrassing or “cringe” for making a fool out of himself trying to get Sam’s approval (assuming what he’s saying is true). That has got to be a daily experience for Sam Hyde. He’s practically a children’s entertainer. There are two things I find ironic about BG Kumbi and Sam Hyde. First, it’s interesting that Kumbi calls himself anti-social in this video, but who is more anti-social than Sam Hyde? That is the crux of his comedy. Kumbi has the modesty to say disparaging things about himself, but Sam legitimately thinks the people that he mocks are 80 IQ, soulless, “human cattle” FOR REAL. BG Kumbi has made fun of people too, but it’s always been directed towards big personalities with clout (Vaush, Pewdiepie, idubbbz, etc.), whereas Sam Hyde has no problem joking that someone should get their head smashed in with a ball-peen hammer for lacking life experience or being mentally ill. “Punching up = good” and “punching down = bad” are not hard and fast rules in comedy, but I do think they say something about one’s comedic agenda and whether they actually care about being funny, or are just driven by malice. Second, BG Kumbi says he isn’t funny and implies that Sam Hyde is. It makes me think of the stand-up set Kumbi posted last year, which he called “cringe.” Well, let’s not forget Sam Hyde has had WAY more stand-up comedy bombs where he just looked like a weirdo and made everyone in the room uncomfortable. The difference is that Sam eventually grew his audience to the point where he could fill up a room with people who already worshiped him so he could do bits where he rolls around on the floor making baby noises that culminate in a “that was my impression of a college student” punchline to raucous applause. BG Kumbi was at an event put on by Jay Dyer, no? He probably COULD have done a bunch of “anti-SJW” pseudo-political humor and got big laughs. But instead, he went up and did an actual comedy routine with (gasp!) normal jokes, which was met with coughs and pity applause, because that’s not what that audience is interested in. Because unlike Sam, Kumbi doesn’t seem to have any kind of agenda or axe-to-grind and just cares about being funny. So yeah, Sam Hyde can make a room full of people laugh. But could he make ANY room full of people laugh? Fuck no. BG Kumbi is a better absurdist comedian than Sam Hyde. Not because he is more accomplished, more experienced, or more naturally talented, but because he's not carrying around the baggage of legitimate malice and narcissism that prevents one from becoming truly funny. This is my hot-take. If you put BG Kumbi and Sam Hyde in a “normal” comedic context in front of a big audience, Kumbi has a higher chance of success. Not saying it’s the peak of comedy, but if you plop the two of them on “Whose Line is it Anyways?”, a pretty basic comedic environment without any unusual political or social context, Kumbi will be able to adapt better because his understanding of comedy is less rigid and specific. He’s ACTUALLY willing to make himself look like a dumbass, which Sam isn’t, no matter how many silly costumes and goofy voices he puts on. He always needs to be the winner. In my opinion, Sam Hyde has already hit his ceiling, which is outsider comedian with a cult of personality and a podcast. His success (and Kumbi’s inability to replicate it) is unsurprising, because he can leech off of political personalities like Jay Dyer and Nick Fuentes as well as serve as the internet right-wing’s token comedian, even if Sam himself is not an explicitly political person. Kumbi cannot do that, but I think his ceiling is far higher. Frankly, I think he is a thousand times closer than Sam is to becoming a Norm MacDonald-esque figure; someone who is eccentric, weird, and possibly stuck feeling lonely forever, but respected and renowned as a technically-skilled comedian. People are not going to remember Sam Hyde 100 years from now. He’s not going to have a legacy. Not because of some personal short-coming of his necessarily, but because some grifter will come along and wear his skin. You cannot imitate a truly legendary comedian in the same way. I have no idea if Kumbi could ever reach that status. Maybe I’m crazy for even thinking it’s possible. But as I said, he’s a fuck-of-a-lot closer to it than Sam is. Maybe I’m being dramatic by writing out all this without a hint of irony in a random UA-cam comment, but it legitimately makes me sad to hear Kumbi saying he isn’t funny, assuming he’s being serious. I think it’s so, so wrong. He has made tens-of-thousands of people (at least) cry with laughter over the past decade. That’s not a fluke. That’s not just people pointing and laughing at the village idiot. It’s legitimate skill.
