To answer your question at the end; No, she did not die young. She never did. Hel is one of the three bastard children (Hel, Fenrir and Jormungandr) from Loki with the Jotünn witch Angrboða. While her brother Fenrir was a wolf and Jormungandr a snake she at least was 'human'. Or half of her was. She was half girl, half decaying corpse. While Jormundangr was thrown into the ocean and Fenrir stayed in Asgard Hel was crowned queen of the dead in Niflheim (AKA Helheim.) since she preferred the company of the dead over that of the living. However Odin had tricked her by crowning her queen of the dead because it also meant she could never leave. Hel does not play an active role in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods, but out of resentment she does lend her father Loki and army of undead to fight the gods in Asgard.
They're essentially translating very old songs and poems for a modern audience. I feel like music is the most appropriate way to teach this material. Well, that or take a longship voyage to Holmgard by way of Byzantium...
