  • UPDATE: Yes-- I have gotten braces since making this video as I indicated I was planning on doing . Nevertheless, I still stand by what I said in this video; I still stand by the idea that physical beauty is NOT all that makes a person beautiful. Even if my teeth are "straight" now, I still have other insecurities, so I still use the tips that I gave on this video. Some people have expressed their disappointment regarding my getting braces. That is okay. But I hope it is understood that this is something I wanted to do from the beginning, and it was helpful not only to my self-esteem, but also to my health. I believe in everyone having the choice of doing what they want with their bodies. So if it disappoints you that I got braces, I'm sorry. But I don't regret it one bit. :)
    ___________
    No, this is not a Death Cab for Cutie cover.. :P
    I hope that by explaining how I deal with my crooked teeth, this video will help those of you who are in the same boat as I am. :)
    Happy times! :)

    Hey i’m a dental nurse and my teeth are not straight just wanted to say perfect teeth are not the be all and end all as long as your teeth and gums are healthy! I see way too many beautiful kind people who have literally cried in the chair over having a crooked smile and it really upsets me! Just know that this instagram style smile is a trend right now and sometimes very dangerous. If you are looking for a straighter whiter smile please always go to a reputable dentist/orthodontist. Imperfect smiles are perfectly fine and when i started my career were not nearly as obsessed over as they are today. Your smile gives you character and beauty even some of the most famous models have perfectly imperfect smiles and absolutely rock that look!

      101Phantomwolf Hi there! Thank you for your comment. And I'm sure I know how you feel! It's not easy having crooked teeth. But just remember what I said on here :) Also, not everyone is a superficial a-hole who will only look at your teeth and judge you. :) Some of us are actually nice ;) xoxo

      +Laura Rodriguez Hi Laura! Trust me, I know exactly how you feel. Since we live in a society that puts so much pressure on us to be beautiful in all physical ways, it's hard to have something that is not easy to cover or play off. At the same time, though, like I said here, your teeth do NOT define you-- they are not ALL of you. You have so much more to offer. And let me tell you-- I know A LOT of people in very high positions at work who are very likable and successful, and they do not have straight teeth at all! Our teeth mean nothing more than a beauty standard. YOU have a lot more to offer than just the way your teeth look. Stay strong and positive, my friend. You are definitely not alone in this.

    My teeth have made me self-conscious for years. They're very crooked, and there's also one pushed much further back on the roof of my mouth that puts me in constant discomfort and gives me a slight lisp. I don't talk to people at school because of it, and I certainly don't smile. While my family has never been able to afford braces for me, I go to school with kids from affluent families, and nearly everyone else has had braces or has naturally perfect teeth, so they don't understand why I don't. I don't think I'll ever be confident with my teeth, but this video really helped me. You're beautiful and so are your teeth!

      Dude, that trivial bullshit doesn't matter. I have horrible teeth, they go every which way you can imagine, a lot of them are rotten, they're all chipped and yellow and they stick out so I couldn't even hide them if I wanted to. I haven't been to a dentist in about 6-7 years. But then again my teeth always hurt and my mouth always bleed, so yea. I smile and laugh all the time and people make fun of me for havin gross teeth and I just laugh with em

    I have had crooked teeth my entire life. I cry about it all the time, I don't go out and socialize because of it. Mostly because I'm so scared by the idea of someone seeing my teeth I try to hide them when I talk and it's so unnatural and uncomfortable. So many people say they have crooked teeth and yes, technically they are crooked it's not even bad. All my teeth are perfect, except two; and that's what makes it bad.my two front teeth are turned. Ones inner side is turned forward and the other opposite. Idk how to explain it. This was due to an extra tooth that came down in between them when I was a kid (I had it removed), if it hadn't came down my teeth would have been naturally perfect like my mothers. I have never in my entire life seen someone's messed up the way mine are, and that's what makes me feel so ashamed. Because normal people think of crooked teeth and they think of things like yours, and it's no big deal but when you see mine it's kind of surprising. I always say, when you live with crooked teeth you can look in the mirror and feel like the most beautiful human being on earth, until you open your mouth, and then you lose every ounce of confidence. I've been made fun of, but now I'm only really the one hard on me. I am homeschooled and I don't talk to new people. It's so stressful because everyday I think about it and become sad because of it. But any sort of treatment is to expensive for my family. I went to a consultation once to see prices and stuff and it's a near 7,000 $ . This was really long so thanks if you read it all, I'm sure it was scattered and confusing but whatever. Idk if I'll ever accept myself, if I'll ever smile and be happy. Maybe one day when I provide for myself I'll afford it, maybe.

      I think it's far more important to just make sure they're clean and well taken care of. I think there are lots of men who find it very attractive and this is going to be a thing in the near future. Don't change them unless you really hate them yourself.

    My teeth are crooked and I smile but I smile with my mouth closed. I laugh but with my mouth closed or looking down a lot or even putting my hands over them. It's really my only insecurity and if I'm being honest, I'm a decent-goodlooking person but the only thing that ruins me is my teeth. All my pictures I have are with my mouth closed because I don't wanna show my teeth. People on social media think I'm handsome but haven't seen my teeth and when I meet them, I'm so scared they'll think to themselves how my teeth are crooked. When I talk to people I look another way or down. My mom is saving up money for the dentist but I really want them now and I'm sorta impatient :( I've offered to work even thought im 15 to help my mom get money faster but my mom says she has everything under control and is saving money. I want to work but I need to focus on school. I need help please! Love your video and thank you so much for posting it!!! Please reply!

    I know that this sounds stupid, but I am deathly afraid of the dentist. I know, it's childish and stupid but for some reason they just stress the hell out of me. I literally have no better reason for not getting braces. I'm at the age (14-15) where kids have already gotten there's on or off, but I haven't gotten them at all. My teeth are my biggest insecurity. I always see these things about how smiling makes you more beautiful, but not with teeth like mine. Whenever I try to look good, I just remember my teeth. I hate it so much and I would give anything to forget my fear of the dentist but it gives me terrible anxiety even thinking about it and I don't know why. Anyway, having crooked teeth sucks, especially when you don't have anything to make up for it like me lol but your video made me feel a lot better knowing there are people with crooked teeth who can pull it off, and go through the same problems as me, so thank you :)

    • @carmiecat
      @carmiecat  8 років тому

      +anime fan Thanks so much for your comment. I'm glad my video at least helped a little bit. Dentist anxiety is actually quite common, so don't think your situation is stupid or childish! It happens to a lot of people. However, it makes me sad that you are deprived of having a smile you want because of your anxiety. I know it's not something you can "get over". Have you considered therapy? Sometimes it takes an expert to show you that it is just an irrational fear that you CAN move on from with help and time. :) Regardless of what you said, I can see you have a beautiful personality and honestly that means SO much more than just having straight teeth. Stay strong, my friend. And I hope you are able to minimize your anxiety and get braces if you wish :)

    I have crooked teeth and I have visited my orthodontists and she told me I need to have braces, but my mom doesn't understand why do I need it and she refuses to let me have braces. Every time when I try to talk to her nicely, she would eventually yell at me, and ask me not to waste her time on bringing me for getting braces. I have been trying to embrace it, but I just feel so self-conscious all the time. :(

    • @carmiecat
      @carmiecat  8 років тому

      I'm so sorry to hear that your mom is not understanding why you need braces. :( I think parents sometimes just don't get how we feel and why something like this is necessary. Correcting a crooked smile is not only good for your self-esteem, but it's also good for your health. I made this video purely with the intention of giving some comfort to people like myself at the time who couldn't get braces. But I hope your mom realizes this is a health issue, and braces would help tremendously! Big hugs, friend!!

    • @carmiecat
      @carmiecat  8 років тому

      +Sterling Official I hope this helps! This is straight from my ortho's website: "Having crooked teeth can often lead to a bad bite, which means your teeth don't fit together properly so they are wearing unevenly. Without treatment, excessive wear can cause cracked teeth and lead to more dental work. Orthodontic treatment can improve function, creating teeth that last longer, work more efficiently, and usually look better. Because properly brushing and flossing your teeth is more difficult with crooked teeth, having a straighter smile will promote proper oral hygiene and keep teeth healthy for the rest of your life."

    • @carmiecat
      @carmiecat  8 років тому

      +Carmie Cat Woah, this is so different from what my dentist said. She told me that it won't affect anything like my health. Straightening my teeth is only to improve my look. That's why my mom told me it's no big deal.

    I lost one of my front teeth when I was 9 years old and my family didn't have the insurance to get it fixed for 17+ years so smiling and socializing with people has never been good. But I did incur much ridicule and judgement in particular from girls. They have always had something mean to say about how messed up my teeth are and my overall appearance (as if I weren't aware of it already) so because of this I have a hard time believing women when they say 'physical beauty is not all what makes a person beautiful' when they have proven they care so much about a guy's image/ appearance etc. I mean if you don't have a nice smile you get treated pretty low sometimes.

    • @carmiecat
      @carmiecat  8 років тому

      Oh I can imagine you had to endure a lot of bullying on this. Trust me, so did I. People definitely do care about physical appearances, that's absolutely true. But my point here is that it is certainly not ALL that matters about a person. And at least the right people in your life could care less about this. There are so many layers to a person, than to just define someone based on this one physical appearance, well, that is just plain superficial. And people who think that way, trust me, they are not my friends. Definitely makes you feel not so great about yourself, but you gotta believe that you are worth so much more than that, and the good people in this world will see that.

    • @SuperTowlie420
      @SuperTowlie420 8 років тому +2

      Yeah its unfortunate because people see my teeth and probably think I never tried to take care of them when in reality I have suffered incidents that led to my teeth being knocked out so people get the wrong impression right off the bat ya know? I'm sorry I didn' t mean to sound harsh on women guys also did their fair share of bullying as well. Thanks for the reassurance tho its nice to know there are still decent people out there like yourself that can look past judging someone based on their appearance.

    i've had anxiety issues with the dentist, for years I've had panic attacks before even opening my mouth so my teeth are all crooked or behind/in front of one another and slightly yellow and have some stains, so with friends and a twin with perfect teeth it kind of felt like I had to keep my mouth shut 24/7 but I'm trying to accept that I am fine the way I am and that if I can't bring myself to get braces at the moment so I'm learning to just brush it off and realise I am more than my teeth and I can always whiten them if I want but I can't change my feelings for braces for now so I am more than my teeth so thank for this (I'm only 15, so you are so inspirational)

      +Caitlín Kirby Hi Caitlin!!! You are such a sweetheart! Thank you for your comment! I know how you feel. Anxiety is no joke, and it is hard to deal with especially when it comes to something you are already unhappy about. But yes-- you should always remember that you are more than your teeth! And you are most certainly not alone!!! Just look at all the comments on this page. There are SO many of us out there who feel the same exact way. Go at your own pace. Do what makes you comfortable. But always know that you are wonderful and you are worth every single thing in this world. :) Big hugs, my friend!!! I am here for you! ;)

    I have terrible front teeth, they're yellow and misaligned. I'm quite conscious about it, I even try to keep my piece in social conversations in fear of revealing these monsters. I had braces as a teenager and really loved smiling for photos and thought I looked great after they came off.. I never got my wisdom teeth out though and they started pushing my teeth out of place and now I feel so sad every time I smile for a photo, or I just avoid them altogether.
    I'm considering an appointment to get invisalign but feel bad spending all that money when I could be using it to pay off my mortgage.. decisions are hard :P

      +Kalliste Hi there!! Your situation is completely understandable. I have found through this channel that there are a lot of people who have had braces when they were younger, but then something happened and their teeth became crowded again. I totally understand how you feel about the money aspect of things, but I think it's still something worth considering if it would really make you feel better about your smile. I actually got braces after this and just had them taken off about a month ago. I only paid $140/mo and my last payment was just this past month :) I did put $500 down, and my insurance covered $1500. Of course it depends on your location, your needs, and what you want to do, but I think orthos try to make it work for you. Just a thought :)

    Hey Carmie!
    I just wanted to let you know that your video actually made me feel better. I can relate to everything that you just said. My teeth are as crooked as yours and your advices are exactly those I give to people who deal with insecurities. I'm a musician myself and I sometimes find it hard to sing in front of people because I'm so self-cautious about my teeth. And I can't stop imagining myself with straight shiny teeth and the impact that it's gonna have on my life and how it's gonna boost my self-esteem. And I think that teeth insecurities are the worst because a smile is something so natural and you don't have to hide it or be ashamed of it, its sad not to be able to smile. My only dream is to smile and laugh in front of people without being ashamed. I needed to hear it from someone who deals with the same struggle as mine, so thank you. You are gorgeous :) ( Sorry for my poor english )

      Hi Sam!
      I am so happy to hear my video made you feel better :) Like I tell everyone that leaves a comment on here, you are definitely worth so much more than just your teeth, but I totally understand how it can be something that brings you anxiety and feelings of low self-esteem. People are superficial, that's just the way it is, but you sound like a beautiful person, and people who truly care about you will know that and not even care what your teeth look like. Just know you are amazing, and if singing is something you love to do, keep doing it!! Showing your beautiful voice will show even more to people how amazing you are ;) Big hugs!!

    My teeth are pretty crooked and I've never been self conscious about it at all. Like I've never given any thought to it. It's just me. My parents, aunt and dentist reccomended me getting some braces. So I went to get a consultation and they said I needed to remove teeth beforehand and I really didn't feel that the cost was worth the payoff($1000 for teeth removal, $3500 for braces) . I told her I really didn't want to do braces and she asked if I was self conscious while I smile, and I honestly am not then she asked why am I in there getting a consultation. I'm gonna pay the same amount of money to get my teeth cleaned semiannually whether they were straight or not. As long as I brush normally and care for them so they are healthy I couldn't care less.

      Good try but 1) again, that is focused on physical beauty and 2) that was written in a Jewish Journal by a person who felt like writing on this topic. This was not a peer-reviewed, scientific study on what beauty means. And we don't have to agree. I see beauty as more than is on someone's physical appearance. You see beauty as physical attributes. It is what it is.

      Hey! So I kind of had the same situation as you. My parents never really wanted me to have braces when I was younger because of the cost. Time went by and I still thought my teeth were one of my biggest insecurities. I'm 19 now. I'm a sophomore in college and I wear braces! I can afford them on my own and made the decision to get them. Honestly, I think I'm so happy I made this decision. I wear ceramic braces on top and metal on the bottom but trust me. There are SOO many adults wearing braces now. It's cool so don't stress about when you wear them, think about the outcome! :)

      Thank you so much for the advice you two! I've been looking for an insurance so the costs of my braces will be a little less expensive :) (I live in the Netherlands so idk how things are organized wherever you guys live haha). Since you're wearing braces: How is it to wear braces? Painful? Made some great progress? I've had some photo's done from my teeth in the past and I think I'll only get braces for my top row :).

    • @emilyem96
      @emilyem96 8 років тому

      +Laura B Wearing braces isn't actually that bad! At first it hurt of course because your teeth aren't used to appliances attached, but then you get used to it and even forget they're there. Honestly, after 2 weeks of having them, my teeth shifted so much. Believe it or not, but when you take care of your teeth how you're supposed to, your teeth will move faster than usual. Right now I'm in my 5th month out of 24 months. My teeth are already straight, top and bottom, and it just makes me so excited for when they come off. Time goes by really fast so don't worry about the length needed! Braces has definitely given me much more confidence and now I smile as if I'm not wearing braces. You learn to love them! :)

When people look at you first impression is what they notice and remember rather than your great personality, your kindness and etc. I too like girls and infact I met someone that I really like tonight but I couldn't built up the confidence to talk to her becasue I know I dont look perfect. I have the worst teeth ever when i was eight i hadn't lost any of my two front teeth my dentist was concerned then he sent me to the orthadontics for an x-ray.I found out i had extra teeth in my gum which blocked my proper adult teeth from coming down after having many appointments (i was at this point 10) i had the operation 6 teeth where removed including my baby teeth in the front so i was toothless missing 2 teeth and there was no way to hide it. I felt like no one understood. In addition chains were added to my mouth on my gum connecting to the adult teeth- i also had/have a retainer to pull them down. I currently have one tooth have down at and angle with chains coming of it and a gap - Worst of all is that it looks like my other tooth is gonna come out completely horizontal ( wrong way) followed by i crooked tooth there not even in the right place one is coming out infront on the other i feel so ugly. If you don't believe me go check out my channel you will see the gaps in my teeth - thanks for listening bye

We all here on this comment thread seem to have had different situations with our teeth, but the one commonality in it is that we are all insecure about our smiles and we are not happy with how our teeth look. Since you are already on your way with getting your teeth corrected, I know you will be fine :) It takes time to correct issues with our smiles, but in the end it is worth it. In the meantime, keep your head high and love yourself. You have so much to offer to the world :) xoxo

      +D. Gia Jessica Hi cutie! I totally understand how you feel. Trust me-- My teeth might not have seemed that bad, but I did feel ugly a lot of the time. I made this video to help others, but also to remind myself that I need to stay positive and like myself for all the other reasons other than my teeth. I am more than sure you are a beautiful and wonderful person. Your teeth might not be perfect, but that doesn't mean you aren't beautiful and super smart. Stay strong, my friend :)

      Carmie Cat I have teethfrom hell due to chemo and other meds and I'm young and attractive but it's always on my mind and causeds depression. It's amazing the power of teeth and we try to downplay the importance but deep inside we know we truly want that perfect smaile. I'm currently looking into actually getting dentures and get myself in a shappier state.

    having crooked teeth has made me extremely fearful of meeting new people and even going to job interviews. I now live with really bad anxiety and I think that it all traces back to my crooked teeth. I wish that straight teeth were not that standard.

    Thanks for the video! It was very uplifting. 😊
    I just wanted to say to everyone that crooked teeth can be very cute. My front teeth on top and bottom are very crooked. My canines are sort of overlapping the teeth near them and I have a gap in between my two front teeth. But every guy that has ever had a crush on me says that his favorite thing about me is my smile. They would always ask for pictures of me smiling. They would be all like "Where's that gorgeous smile? ;)" So don't feel bad about your teeth! They are unique!

    I'm really glad you made this video. I had braces when I was a child, and my teeth were straight and I got them removed, but I didn't wear my retainer after as much as I should have (which was entirely my own fault), and my front bottom teeth moved back and got crowded and one of them sticks forward a bit. My top row of teeth are perfectly straight and I'm glad for that, but the bottom ones are so noticeable and I'm -constantly- thinking about them. Not a day goes by that I don't feel horrible about how those teeth look. The dentist has even told me to be careful because the crowding makes it much easier for plaque and all to build up...it also doesn't help that I'm incredibly terrified of dentists so I don't go as much as I should, and I'm pretty sure I'm developing gum disease...
    I also work in child care, and since kids are curious about things they don't see often, so I've had my teeth pointed out and asked about more often than I'd like. I've gotten everything from 'what happened to your teeth' to 'it looks like your tooth is going to fall out' and I know they're kids and they're curious but it makes me so insecure. I'm just so mad at myself because I didn't wear my retainer and this is the result. I wasted so much of my parents money...Now I'm 30 and I'd give anything to get braces again (despite my fear of dentists) but I can't afford them because I'm poor. So it feels like I'm going to have to live with my past mistake for my whole life and be insecure about my teeth for my whole life. Sometimes I even feel like a big reason I'm still single is because my teeth are so unattractive. I love to sing and I don't make vocal cover videos because I don't want people to comment on or see my teeth. I've gotten upset about my teeth enough that they cause me terrible anxiety sometimes and I've had quite a few panic attacks because I just get so upset. I can't even look at my own teeth and often can't look at other people's teeth because it gives me anxiety.
    There have even been times where I've wondered if I'd be better off having the tooth that sticks out removed, but then I'd have a gap in my teeth where it was and I'm not sure that's much better (though at some angles you can't see the tooth at all so it looks like I have a gap.) There are certain foods I can't eat normally because of that tooth (such as apples) because of the risk of them just popping the tooth right out, since the gum line around it is so low. I'm also overweight, but in many cases my teeth have caused me more insecurity than my weight has, and my weight is more noticeable at all times, where my teeth are not. Sometimes I'll sit here and think 'if only I was rich, I'd just have them remove my teeth and put in perfect straight ones.' I just don't know how NOT to feel bad about them.

    • @carmiecat
      @carmiecat  8 років тому +2

      Thank you for your comment!! I totally understand how you feel! Especially being around kids because they do not care how people feel! Haha but at least your top teeth are straight! That's a plus! But like I said on here, you gotta remember all the other amazing things you are about! You have so many other amazing qualities to you!! Don't forget that :). Big hugs!!

      @mchobbit2951 8 років тому

      Emily maybe look at Snap-On smile. If you get just the bottom those could be affordable. Your teeth wouldn't actually be straight but they would look like they are with the Snap-On smile in.
