- London.
In this musical item, The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band play their song 'Equestrian Statue' from their first LP 'Gorilla'. Shots of them playing in what looks like London's Speakeasy Club are intercut with footage of an equestrian statue and the band running over a grassy hill (could be Hampstead Heath) in strange costumes. Neil Innes is seen dressed in a kind of concrete military hat and jacket with a fabric 'horse' beneath him, while Legs Larry Smith in a sailor suit 'whitewashes' him. C/U of Sam Spoons wearing a strange, wired head-contraption.
Someone in a monkey suit plays the organ (I'm not sure who this is - does anyone out there know?). Accompanying this harpischord-style instrumental break are several shots of the band in 18th century / Georgian costumes enjoying a banquet - stuffing their faces and belching.
More shots of the band walking over the grass, some playing their instruments. Vivian Stanshall dances around with a large female dummy / doll. Towards the end of the number we see several very brief shots from previous Colour Pics; mostly of men on horseback, also from other stories in this CP issue, including the Bonzos' previous appearance with 'Music for Head Ballet'.
The line-up of the band here is Vernon Dudley Bohay-Nowell, Legs Larry Smith, Roger Ruskin Spear, Sam Spoons, Rodney Slater, Vivian Stanshall, Neil Innes and unidentified person in monkey costume.
Cuts exist - see separate record.

FABULOUS!!! They were so inventive, witty, satirical, creative, special, hilarious and just WOW!!!
A hilarious pastiche of the Fab Four.
Love this. Neil Innes was a superb songwriter.
What an absolute gem.
The particular song reminds me SO much of the Kinks at that bridge change. LOVE the Bonzos.
They toured with the kinks in 1969 🌹 🇬🇧 🎶 In the. 🇺🇸
I loved their music, the escapism and the clarity of their instruments. They were great musicians
They really were brilliant. Thoroughly enjoyed.
I was lucky enough to see them in the early 70s. One of my favourite bands of all time. This was the first song of theirs I ever heard and loved it immediately. Neil was just an amazing composer. RIP Viv and Neil.
Why is there always someone on every UA-cam video that says, "I saw this band..." I'm truly happy if you truly did, but please make a comment about the brilliance of the song; not your boast about having seen the band.
@@jeffanderson8678 I always enjoy these comments knowing there are fans from that time still appreciating the music, no need to be rude about it. looks like you had a bad day Jeff I hope it gets better for you.
Great song. The Viv you see here became Paul McCartney in late 1966. Hence the Sgt Pepper era….
They were truly awesome & it’s a shame they weren’t together longer. Godspeed Sir Henry!
@@andrewpopowycz4458lol. Somebody read memoirs of Billy Shears. That book mixed pieces of the truth with disinformation. There was more than one Paul but it wasn't Vivian Stanshall.
This is one of my favorite songs from them ❤
Easily as far-out as 'Strawberry Fields' and 'See Emily Play'...great to be able to see it!
Even better I say!
@@UrlocallordandsaviorI do declare!
It feels so gay!
Every person on this earth should watch this Bonzo video. Thank you for sharing.
I defenitetly agree with you, alas they are coming to get me again
I agree. And you can never watch it just once.
Viv and Neil--two heroes. Thanks for posting this.
Love the Bonzo's big influence on me
The Boys formed a band ...since then they've never looked back!! Kynsham. brilliant ..
Best dancing mannequin ever captured on film.
Wonderful song by The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. British Pathé has made the archived reels of cuts and out takes of this film available online. Nice.
I love that my dad was in college with them. I had all the records to listen to as a kid :) He had some good stories too!
Aww. Neil Viv, guys. I o v e you. Wish u were still here 💔
'Viv' is 'Paul McCartney'.
This is great!!
The Dog Doo Dah's do it again!!
Happily and refreshingly, no mention of putting a traffic cone on the statue.
This was released as a single in 1967 (b-side was intro/outro)
With Garner "Ted" Armstrong on vocals! (Beep-doodily-oobeda-bwee-bah, oowee-aah, ooyah!)
Had I only witnessed this piece when it was originally released! (that almost rhymed...) The Equestrian Statue is 110% Genius Psych Pop!
its slightly sped up if you listen to the album version after this
This is the better than most of the bands from the 1960s and 1970s combined. Thank you for sharing.
Eh?
British eccentricity at its best. Could never be produced in any other country in the world.
Roger Ruskin Spear, the cornet player, played our college with a backup band consisting of two robots. An English first!
These guys had to be playing on Sgt. Pepper's.
No, but the Beatles loved them and Paul McCartney was a big fan. That’s why Paul put them in the magical mystery tour video. They are the band that sings “death cab for cutie”
I think that they influenced the Beatles.
This could be paired up with some footage from Terry Gilliam's Munchausen movie... I keep thinking of it whenever I listen to this song :)
What a great tune.
They were great live, too. They were popular at Detroit's Grande Ballroom, in the heart of the ghetto.
Reminds me of the Beatles at Sergeant Pepper and after
What a coincidence 🤔 😅
Because Billy was a member of both bands at the time.
Billy shears
This is ,apart from being hilarious, actually a beautiful song.
This is so great, I only discovered this a few ago , 1967 , probably the greatest year in pop music. Looks like this was recorded during the filming of Magical mystery tour, it should have been in the film , for me it's better than death cab for cutie.
Absolutely!
Brilliant!!
Wonderful stuff! So good to see this again, thanks for posting it!
There are still wonderful things left in this world.
Thank You! I loved it...............
clearly the proto-Rutles!
:- )
Neil wrote songs for both.
Groovy baby, far out!!!
I wish this could be England again please!
Sounds *very* much like Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Well played!
They were on a national rock show doing "Trouser Press." Most of the audience looked confused. The 2 or 3 overly enthusiastic planted gals reacted randomly as told. Looked really strange.
I love The Bonzo Dog Do Dah Band. I love this song and the video. It brings me joy and I feel so gay.
yes
👍👍👍❤❤❤
Sam Spoons!
Viv Stanshall or was it Billy Shears or the Faul MaCartney .... !
the vivian stanshall is paul theory kinda falls apart when you actually use your brain for once
its kinda hard to be two different people who write and act differently
@@darbwashereand the fact that Vivian Stanshall has been dead nearly 30 years.
If you believe the theory, Billy Shears replaced Paul at the end of 1966 and Vivian was already in his band at that time. Billy Shears couldn't have been both Paul and Vivian at the same time. Especially since they were both in the same movie.
@@val-ow5hnjust saying the scene that Viv is in Paul is the only Beatle that is not in the scene.
Never seen this'un bee-fore.
Veygud 👌😻
they really were the English avante guarde of the 60s...the equivalent of the beatles.
Should have been the follow up to Urban Spaceman.
This was released the year before Urban, in 1967. With Intro Outro on the b side
Sounds like In Dulce Jubilo
I feel so gay
Did any of these musicians ever jam with Soft Machine? Or Giles Giles and Fripp? Seems it's all like minded music to me.
With all the insanity going on in the world 🌍 today. One needs a source of escape to relax and laugh. For me, I like watching thise crazy LGBQTMAI++++++++++ videos to enjoy a good laugh. This music 🎵🎶 does the same thing, it relaxes you. The only real comparable acts now is people like Wierd Al. In the 40's you had Spike Jones and the city slickers. In the 50-60's you had the brilliant talent of Tom Lehrer. And in the 70-80's there was Frank Zappa. Where is the 21st century musical comedy 🎵🎶 relief? God knows we need one.
Who's the babe?
Did McCartney produce this tune?
No, Dirk McQuickly did.
He only did Urban Spaceman as Apollo C. Vermouth to the best of my knowledge.
McCartney is here, playing on this tune.
'Vivian Stanshall' is 'Paul McCartney'.
@@andreazavareei6548 Though the Bonzos played a tune in "Magical Mystery Tour", surely one of the high points.

This aged badly
What do you mean by "badly"?
I suppose you are referring to the intense trolling by the looney.
