Το απολιθωμένο δάσος Σίγρης Μυτηλήνης
σχηματισμός του απολιθωμένου δάσους σχετίζεται με την έντονη ηφαιστειακή δραστηριότητα που έλαβε χώρα στη Λέσβο κατά το τέλος του Ολιγοκαίνου μέχρι το μέσο Μειόκαινο, περίπου πριν 20 εκατομμύρια χρόνια. Η δραστηριότητα αυτή δημιούργησε, εκτός από λάβα, πυροκλαστικά υλικά και ηφαιστειακή σποδό (στάχτη), με συνέπεια την κάλυψη της χλωρίδας στην περιοχή, και μάλιστα σε ιδιαίτερα σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα. Η κάλυψη αυτή είχε ως συνέπεια την απομόνωση των οργανικών υλικών της χλωρίδας από την ατμόσφαιρα. Η ηφαιστειακή δραστηριότητα ακολουθήθηκε από τη δημιουργία υδροθερμικών διαλυμάτων, πλούσιων σε διοξείδιο του πυριτίου (SiO2). Τα διαλύματα αυτά εμπότισαν τη σποδό που είχε καλύψει τους κορμούς των δένδρων, σηματοδοτώντας την έναρξη της απολίθωσής τους, καθώς η οργανική ύλη των κορμών σταδιακά αντικαταστάθηκε από το διοξείδιο του πυριτίου. Η διαγένεση, όπως ονομάζεται αυτή η διαδικασία, έγινε υπό σχεδόν ιδανικές συνθήκες. Τα μορφολογικά χαρακτηριστικά των κορμών, όπως οι ετήσιοι δακτύλιοι, οι ανωμαλίες του εξωτερικού φλοιού κτλ. είναι διατηρημένα σε άριστη κατάσταση.
Έχει υποδειχθεί ως προστατευμένο φυσικό μνημείο. Το Απολιθωμένο Δάσος της Λέσβου είναι διατηρητέο μνημείο της φύσης από το 1985, σύμφωνα με το ΦΕΚ 160/Α/1985.[2] Το 1987 πραγματοποιήθηκαν οι πρώτες ανασκαφές στο Πάρκο Απολιθωμένο Δάσος Λέσβου, το πρώτο πάρκο που δημιουργήθηκε, ενώ από το 1997 πραγματοποιούνται συστηματικές ανασκαφές από το Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου. Το Μουσείο ιδρύθηκε το 1994 στο Σίγρι και έχει ως σκοπό τη μελέτη, ανάδειξη και προστασία του Απολιθωμένου Δάσους. Από το 2000, το Μουσείο είναι ιδρυτικό μέλος του δικτύου Ευρωπαϊκών Γεωπάρκων και το 2004 εντάχθηκε στο Παγκόσμιο Δίκτυο Γεωπάρκων της UNESCO. Υπάρχουν άλλες πέντε προστατευόμενες εκτάσεις, το πάρκο Πλάκας, το πάρκο Σιγρίου, το θαλάσσιο πάρκο της Νησιώπης και το πάρκο Χαμανδρούλα. Το 2012, ύστερα από σχετική εισήγηση, η περιοχή του προστατευόμενου γεωπάρκου επεκτάθηκε ώστε να περιλαμβάνει όλο το νησί της Λέσβου.[3]
