    Sewing machine, 5 minutes but If you have a serger:
    Use 4 spools of serger thread.
    Set up:
    Right and left needles: 8
    Upper and lower loopers: 3
    Differential feed: 2.5
    Stitch length: 4
    Makes TONS of gathers in SECONDS!!!!!🧵🧵🧵🧵

      thank you! yes pla let me know the link to where you explain this step.... also, i notice you did it up until the knee... but what about i wanted long? do they sell tulle longer than this one?

    • @FashionBehindTheSeams
      @FashionBehindTheSeams  8 років тому +4

      +NathalyCalle I don't have that documented but here is what you can do. Measure you waist. Then buy elastic . I recommend the wide elastic. You can to make sure the elastic is cut smaller than the waist, because it will be stretching. If your waist is example 28, you can cut your elastic 27 or 26 depending on your comfort . But here is the part that is important. To make sure you can get the skirt over your hips, measure the largest part of your hips (example let's say that is 34 inches) . What you will need to do is gather the tulle 1st and make sure it is 34 inches after it's been gathered and then you will sew it to the elastic (which is only 28 inches ) while sewing, you will stretch out the elastic match the tulle... And once it is sewn, the tulle will get gathered even more. Make sense?
      As for the length, you can buy tulle that is wider (I think you can find width of 108) you can still gather that on fold and get a maxi length)

    Hi , I would like to know how you keep the tulle from wrinkling? Or how do you remove the static/wrinkles?

    • @FashionBehindTheSeams
      @FashionBehindTheSeams  6 років тому +1

      HI! I've actually never had issues with wrinkling or static with tulle. It might be the type of tulle you are using? I usually get mine from Joanns or Hobby Lobby and to store it, I either keep it on the bolt or fold it up and hang it up using a skirt/ pants hanger. Hope that helps!

      I would gather it, the top stitch it to the fabric that you are going to use for the dress, that is what I do for my skirts

    im hoping you'll be able to reply. i want to make this a tutu with the gathered tulle for my toddler (1 year and a half) for her halloween costume. her waist is 16 inches around, and i need the skirt to be short, so... about 7 or 8 inches long. any idea how much tulle i will need to get for her? im going to be doing the trick you did at the end, by doubling it to make 4 layers. i just dont want to end up buying less (or more) tulle than i actually need.

    • @FashionBehindTheSeams
      @FashionBehindTheSeams  8 років тому

      HI There! When is comes to gathering tulle, there are some variables to take into account.. The yardage you need depends on the tightness or the "poofyness of the gathers".. which is why I usually have some leftover tulle.. I understand not wanting to waste fabric or buying more than you need..
      Here is what I recommend in your case. If you have any tulle laying around, take a ten-inch strip of tulle and then using this technique , gather all of it. Then measure it flat and see how much it shrunk to. Example. if your 10 inches shrunk to 4 inches after being gathered, take note of that. Also take not of what tension you used on your machine.
      Now.. lets say that 10 inches shrunk to 4 inches. This means that you make a 16-inch waist, you will need 4 times 4 = 16 inches after it has been gathered. That means that before its been gathered, you need 10 times 4 = 40 inches.
      Now leave a couple extra inches to be on the safer side and also for seam allowance.. so instead of 40, perhaps start with 42.
      Next thing, remember that you need only 8 inches tall skirt, which means you can cut tulle into 16-inch strips , then fold length wise, then gather. Does that make sense? This requires some math and some thinking..
      if you want to keep it simple.. you could always guess.. Just buy somewhere between 2 and 3 yards and that should be enough.. Tulle is around $ 2 yard and you can use coupons..
      To give you an idea.. for the skirt I made for myself.. here I used 6 yards and still had some leftover.. I dont see you needing more than 2-3 yards for a toddler..
      facebook.com/FashionBehindTheSeams/photos/a.781288395288611.1073741829.723474181070033/979065032177612/?type=3&theater
      This is a dress I made for my toddler when she was 2. I cant imagine having used more than 2 yards here
      fashionbehindtheseams.com/2015/11/25-jazzy-tulle-dress/
      Lastly.. It's a lot easier for me to help with picture examples over at my FB page since I cannot attach picture here. So hop on over to my FB page and you can ask sewing questions there as well :)

      @mumblesandwool1243 8 років тому

      +Fashion Behind The Seams thank you so much! also, i suppose it makes things much harder considering i will have to use a basting stitch on my machone, but then i have to gather it by hand, since i neither have a ruffling foot nor gathering foot, and my machine is about 50 years old (vintage machine) im not sure if they make those feet to fit my machine..

    • @FashionBehindTheSeams
      @FashionBehindTheSeams  8 років тому

      To gather, you could always up the tension and use just the basting stitch to see if that gather.. but if not, there are 2 more tricks
      1. Do pleating instead. Feed the tulle under the presser foot to secure it.. then create tiny pleats as you feed the fabric through the machine. Since tulle is so fluffy, it will look like gathers.. just make sure pleats are tiny and not big.
      2. Or you could take a needle with a large hole. and use either dental floss or regular thread and make a very large basting stitch by hand. This will make gathering easy. Just be careful not to lose the string , which can be tricky.. but those are alternatives :) Love to see you make for your daughter. I just made mine a minnie mouse dress and she loves it.
