3:43 - Little did Noel know but a few years later, he'd be presenting a similar Saturday night entertainment extravaganza with a more permanent set lookiung like a grand old house...

I'm from the West Midlands. I remember going to my first bonfire night at our local cricket club on this very night ( 05/11/88). I recall it being really foggy (as mentioned on the weather bulletin here). Anyhow the fog turned into a smog because of all of the bonfires.
My dad and I had a lot trouble finding our way home at the end of the evening. As a four year old it was terrifying. The smog got onto my chest and I developed a nasty cough as a result. I spent the next day recovering on the sofa and we watched All Creatures Great and Small together (mom must have taped it).
Soooo anyway it's really uncanny seeing this video. My hazy childhood memories are proven to be really accurate.

Like Alison Bryen, I'm from the West Midlands. Tipton in the Black Country. I was 16 at the time. I was at the West Bromwich Albion v Oxford game when we won 3-2 in the afternoon and during the second half the fog started to come down. Not as bad as Port Vale where it was abandoned, but you could notice it getting worse by the final whistle. I had friends who were at Wolves v Southend that day and a Villa mate who'd gone to Man Utd, and I recall they said how bad it was the further north you went. By evening, with the Bonfires, I remember a smog where you could hardly see 5 feet in front of you. It was a terrific fog/smog. I always remebered tis night and wondered if there was any reports on the fog, and here it is!

I was eighteen and well remember Moira Stuart, John Kettley (the very year that his tribute song came out) and Steve Lee on Midlands Today!

The BBC News Titles Are Still The Old Ones I Thought They Replaced it!

Must have kept them for the weekend news. The new studio and titles for the Nine o'clock news changed on 31st October 1988. However, the weekend news must have changed soon after as I have seen a clip from December 1988 where it is the same studio and titles as the Nine o'clock news
