  • North Carolina scores a pair of goals by setting picks at the top of the box with defensive midfielders and rolling to the midfield line to sub. The first by Justin Anderson directly off of the pick as he continues the dodge down the alley and the second by Chris Cloutier out of a pass down, pick down look in the ensuing 5v5.

For the defense, is getting the personnel you want on the field worth the risk of getting beat on a substitution. Why not stay on the field, possibly even get a quick double??

Some might say it's worth it. On my team, my offensive personnel don't really know the defensive calls. This makes them a liability and we look to get them off the field if we can.

You could do that and some teams do. Just depends on the team. Some teams are running offensive specialists at midfield who are either liabilities on defense or so valuable on offense that it's best to have them on offense for as many possessions as possible by trying to minimize the number of times they get caught on defense.

So smart. Can create 5v5, get the sub off quickly why maintaining movement, and even possibly get a offensive middie stuck playing defense if they don't play the pick and switch correctly.
