Hey Chris hopefully you get this message. This video is 10 years old, but I just dig them. Been going back through the archive. So good. I’m sure you are off doing other things but would love to see more. Your perspective is unique. To answer the question in the video, northern beaches, Sydney Australia 🇦🇺 cheers
I'm 6'3.5 and around 88kg. Got it as a 6'2 stock dims which is about 31L. This was to fill the gap for waist to head high waves. Holy crap, I can ride this in fatter slower waves and it is fun. Once the waves get a little punchier its unreal. 2nd best board I have had - both sloppy and clean waves it is fun. You can kind of feel Dane in the board if that makes sense. Its loose so you relax your style and flow a bit more. The more you do this the more it 'works'. Takes a few surfs to get the feel of. The release is super loose and fun. It is forgiving too when your timing is a little off. The board will not punish you, rather making your f-up fun and you can line up the next section. Also it goes through fat sections etc so well. I used to have to worry about changing boards if the surf was a bit full, but not on this thing. Suddenly I can trade in 2-3 boards just for this board. The smallish wave board and performance short board just had a baby and named it the DFR. Having said this, I have been riding boards about 1-2L under volume though... I would say in indo this board is essential if you want to be in the pocket. There is some crazy combination going where you feel no sacrifice for the volume you are riding. DO NOT surf it like it is a flat board, it will feel weird, crap, worst board ever. Like dude is saying in the video, with the rocker you want to be going up and down, not planing along like its a hypto krypto. Keep the board doing what its made for, and you may pitch a tent mid wave! For anyone that cares (anybody?) I've been riding this along the coast of NSW in AU - beachies mainly but am confident this thing will be gold out at point breaks too with the volume in it. I have ridden it up to head and a half and it still hadnt hit its limit. I have only had it for 2.5 weeks so if I'm being helpful hit me up for more detail.
I'm still riding it Bond, it's awesome! You don't need good waves for it to work, you have way better paddling power and speed than you would think for a board with those dims and rocker. Give 'em hell!
Hey I'm from Long Beach and surf Huntington Beach pier a ton and also Lowers in San Clemente. I'm 5'8" 150lbs and ride my DFR at 5'8", 18 3/8" wide, 2 1/8" thick, 23.2 liters volume. Love it's performance in bigger, more powerful surf. atleast 3-5ft range. It doesn't surf well in ankle to knee high surf. It paddles ok, but if I were going to buy the board again I would want just a LITTLE more volume to help paddle me when there's a crowd :) but gets the job done! super responsive as Chris said
I'm 5'10, 160. Rode this board a ton mostly around San Diego area and found it to have unlimited potential in good waves, but not so good if the surf is weak. Love the way this board allows you to do vertical critical turns in the lip and above the lip. Great high performance board would recommend it to someone who is intermediate/advanced.
Awesome i'm in San Diego as well. Going to try and pick on of these up. I feel like it'd be great for all the steepish beach breaks likes Blacks and Scripps. Still liking the board?
Love this board. I'm 6'0 180 and have the 6'0 x 19 x 2 3/8 dfr. Goes really good in punchy Newport conditions with the v2 fcs fins. The response getting vertical and release off the lip is insane.
Cape Town South Africa, just got this board and I am 14 and weigh 63kg I LOVE this board. When I surf it I don't call myself a surf I call myself a pilot because it's so good for airs!
hey im from england but i live in biarritz france, i ride my dfr most days and i love the thing, is very responsive and is just super fun. in smaller days it does not work as well but as soon as a more powerful 3ft plus day comes then this is my go to board, i love the thing and would so buy it again. great board.
Los Angeles, CA. I surf Huntington Beach mostly, but will venture down to SD every now and then. I'm glad you did a review of the DFR, I wasn't sure about getting one, and now I'm sure I'm not. I like the board, but just not my cup of tea... yet. Took my 6'1" Fred Rubble out Last Friday (6/7/13) when that large swell (6-8ft) hit So Cal (orange county mostly), and the board came to life!!! The Fred is perfect for waves down here in So Cal. If I lived up north, I definitely would be riding a DFR.
sounds like a great board. love your work im in grade 10 and am from the sunshine coast, Queensland. I find all of your videos really helpful and i love that they have good detail but i can still understand it thanks.
Riding a 5'10 (25.6L if I recall) and I'm 5'9 145lbs. Favorite performance board and you're spot on, rips in the lip, but is a bit tricky on wrapping ct backs that are more of my bread and butter since I usually surf wider more grovelly boards.
Have this board: 185lbs, went with a 6'3" at 32'ish litres. Because of the length, I use this board for really good so cal waves. I usually don't surf it unless its a couple feet overhead. I like surfing it in areas like: Newport, magnolia HB, clemente area. Took it to Hawaii as well and it performed very well.
Yeah I'd have to agree. They look similar up front. I have a Fred RndSq Tail & a SP12 Rnd Tail an inch longer but haven't ridden the FR yet & the SP12 in fat stuff only a handful of times which was interesting with one session that was overhead. The SP12 has a lot of vee right behind the rear fin on tail. It definitely wants the pocket or 2 be arching sharply with the rocker on the flats. Chris's take on it will be interesting 2 see. Anyway, I have one week until Indo to do some testing. Cheers!
East coast! Long Island. I'd be interested in trying this board, although lately I've been having much more fun on the small wave fishes and mini simmons.
Really liking the vids Chris. I'm keen to see a review of the SP12, Sub-Scorcher & Sub Scorcher II. Interesting to see your take on how the SP12 relates to the Fred Rubble and the DFR. Avalon, Sydney, OZ.
Really good board! Do you think this board could be a good choice for strong barrel like kandui left? Which CI surboards model would you recommend for kandui left surfing?
I love the videos. Very informative. Have you ever considered throwing some fins on the boards to help show a the particulars on a boards fin placement? You wouldn't have to have them in the whole time.
South Western Australia, 6'3, 90kg. Surfed the dfr for 6 months now. Works best on the point breaks as opposed to beachies. Really responsive with turns given the amount of rocker. Epic for waves 3ft+ but lacks alot of punch and drive down the line for smaller stuff
Loving the insight into what makes surfboards tick! Im a big fan of technical aspects of boards, Ive been a team rider for the local shaper and even shaped a few myself but dont think I learned as much as I have watching your clips! Keep up the good work and maybe you could feature some Aussie shapers. Im currently riding JS Monsta, JS Monsta X and the JS Matrix and I have to say the BEST boards Ive ever ridden. Although in saying that I havent ridden any Channel Islands...
Keep up the great work, Manhattan Beach I've learned more about modern board design on your site than and shaper or shop clerk has ever been able to explain. Thanks. I'd like to hear about the Proton and Proton Step up, Fort Knox too while you're at it.
Mark thank you. Stoked you brought up a Fort Knox. Really good board that gets less attention than it would if Dane and Kelly didn't have so many boards out with CI. Did you see his air section in Loaded? I loved it.
East Coast, NC. AB and OBX. I ride my weirdo ripper in just about everything... Looking at getting this board for more high-performance in bigger stuff. Recommended wave height? I know what CI says on their website, but could I ride this board in stomach-head high slop and still get up and down on the sections? Any advice?
I am 5'11" and weigh 175 pounds. I rode this board in a 6'0" in Indonesia in both mushy slow waves and in extremely fast waves well overhead. This board likes to turn, so I had more fun with it in the slower waves where I could round-house into the white wash, etc. When I had to race down the line on 10' waves in Lombok, I found that I had to nurse the board through long arcing bottom turns and then again on full rail carves as the tail wants to release due to all that rocker. I lost the tail on some higher speed turns when I didn't want to and I was just damn careful about bottom turns. Every board has it's limits. I recommend this board for smaller fun waves and would recommend less rocker for large waves.
Oregon. I've had a DFR for a couple months. Mine DOES have a hard edge running up further than normal. It's a great board for powerful beachies. Works alright in lined up surf but is more suited to bowly waves that move towards shore and allow you to surf top-to-bottom. Likes barrels. Not recommended for non-advanced surfers or small and/or mushy waves. Future AM2 fins if you're over 180lbs., AM1's for smaller people. Glass job is okay but board is dented to hell after about 40 sessions.
i shape some bords here in mexico, its hard down here to get boards for ourselves and materials to make them, the knowledge basically we have o discover for ourselves, no shapers around, what works this wave what works for that wave for this trick. you explain design fundamentals very good and it helps me with my designs. i belive that as a shaper you should play with the fundamentals, maybe you break them and redefine what is posible.
Hey, what's up? I'm from San Diego. I'm 5'6 and 130 lbs. What do you think the best board and fin setup would be for me? I'm intermediate and I was thinking about getting the fred rubble. thanks
The best Ci I've ridden in a long time, it goes vertical of the bottom and even though it's a single concave throughout, the tail rocker allows for plenty of release off the top, on the verge of being skatey if you're used to drivey boards. Middle of the board is fat-ish but tapers dramatically from middle to nose and tail. Don't use small or plastic fins, you'll be doing 360s. Otherwise it's a great bowly reef/beach break board.
I'm from Austria and still a beginner, which makes this show even more valuable for me! I'm really looking to find a shortboard/fish I can ride in waist to head high surf in south france. (specs: I'm 5'10'' and 138lbs) Help and tips for what surfboard to get would be much appreciated!
I ride a dfr in a 4"9 with the jordy fins. im only 11 and 85 pounds i win most of the contest around florida and love my dfr for bigger "florida days". i can air and almost air reverse. this is a really good board that i love. i usually ride fcs fins, what would be a good fcs fin for a dfr???
I'm an average surfer living in so cal, novice to intermediate and looking to get more high performance. I'm choosing between the Lost Driver and the DFR. I lean towards easier board to paddle! which one of those two do you recommend the most ? Thanks for the help with the videos Chris!
Hey, Awesome video! I was just wondering how this could be compared to the Channel islands New Flyer? I live in Central Mexico, and National Competitions are coming up in Acapulco... Im 16 years old, 1.70 tall and 70 kg. Which one should I get? Thanks, and again... Awesomo videos, keep it up! ;)
Love your show man! Do you think you could get your hands on a Firewire Potatonator? Im super interested and would love to hear your opinion on the board. Thanks!
Hey man thanks a lot for the review I have a question. I am 6'1" 170 lbs I am from Santa Barbara but I am currently going to school on Oahu. I am looking for board that will be good in shoulder to overhead really good surf on the north shore. I am thinking about getting something like a DFR or a Proton. I really like the DFR but I do not do airs, although I would like to learn them. my question to you is can you recommend a good high performance short board for vertical, really good ,barreling waves like the north shore? thanks again I really appreciate it
sydney i have a 5'10 dfr im about 5'8 or 5'7. i wish i got the board about the same height as me but it still goes good thou i have jon jon fins in it mediums.
I want to buy an Al merrick short board, it will be my first short board and I surf in Cornwall, England. I'm 6ft and 175 lbs. what board would you Suggest?
I got this board in April and at first I hated it. I went out at Swamis on a 2-3 foot day and it was slow as hell, I spent the entire time pumping trying to get some speed. But then we got some swell in early May and this board was pure magic at 5 foot Blacks. It just feels right doing hard on the rail carves. The single concave makes this board really only good for me when the surf is up but when it is damn this board is good. Also I am 6'3 and about 195 pounds.
Hi guys, I am trying to find the AM2 in medium size. I'm 5'8 and I weight 148 lb. I ride the old FCS setup with the medium AM2 in my 5'5 channel Island '4'. I'm buying a Channel Island DFR 5'8. I know these fins balance out the the crazy release the DFR has to make it a little more drivey. Should I consider riding larger fins even if I do not weight 180 lb?
Just my 2 cents, but I have both the SP12 and the Fred. The SP12 is a merger of the original SemiPro and the Fred. The front half is the Fred Rubble and the tail is from the SP. So basically, Kelly Slater wanted a fred rubble nose on his SP design, but ultimately he ended up just surfing the Fred all the time. Again, this is just my opinion.....
I'm 5'11" 130lbs I just got this board 5'11" 2 5/8" 18 and something " off craigslist the other day . It feels so bulky but that was expected given the thickness dimension but I can't wait to try it although the proton I can already tell is a better board
Dude, can you review the Al Merrick Cheese Stick, its the model of Yadin Nicol, and im really interested in how does it performs at point break conditions. I have one and it works really good at aerials manuevers, but i leave in beack breaks. Im from Brazil, Rio de Janeiro and im 6,0, 160
I'm 5'8" and average 150lbs., intermediate/advanced surfer...what dimensions would you recommend? The 5'8" is temping but seems like it may not have enough float...what are your thought?
and i agree with what you said about the fins but the AM2 are too big for some people. I'm 5'6'' and 60kg and I ride a fred rubble with the AM1 that are the same template but just a bit smaller and I like it a lot. basicly the AM models are all good. just choose the one that fits with your weight and your strength.
Tal zaur 33 from israel, I have a custom order the board with different dimensions 5"10 19 2 5/16 26.7L i'm 5"5 165lbs and i find this board very Stiff to ride if i Compares to my 5"10 sp12 Surfing with him not flowing and smoothly like in the sp12 and he always stuck when i'm cutting back I need to activate with a lot of power.

Sam, what fins did you use in the dfr? How do you think it would go 1 inch longer than a surfers height? I am 6 foot but heavier than you.
love the discussion of the AM2 fin vs the Tim Stamps fins. Excellent.
I have both fins and wondered when to use each one. Thanks!

Ventura county, California. I plan on getting this board because I surf the waves it was specifically designed for. Can't wait to get it!
Your videos single handedly helped me decide on my next board. Thanks for all the info. Learned a ton!

Very good work guys. From this old timer your opinions are spot on.

I'm a female & love your videos! (lol so you have at least 1!) I currently live in Narragansett, RI, where the good surf is usually cold surf.

Keep up the great work, Manhattan Beach

Mark thank you. Stoked you brought up a Fort Knox. Really good board that gets less attention than it would if Dane and Kelly didn't have so many boards out with CI. Did you see his air section in Loaded? I loved it.
The proton is by far the best surfboard I have ever experienced for pumping waves
Best board yet!! Kona, HI
San diego here! Love my proctor blackbird @ 6'2 x 18 7\8 x 2 1/4. Im 6 foot x 185. Great all arounder.

how does this board perform in punchy beach breaks like waist to slightly overhead?
It sounds like your fins might be too small, what fins were you using?
@@doodlejump5167those are the types of waves the board was made for
Huntington Beach Baby!!! love the show!!
Oregon. I've had a DFR for a couple months. Mine DOES have a hard edge running up further than normal. It's a great board for powerful beachies. how tall & heavy are you?
drizzydrew4 I'm 5" 9 and 150 pounds

Since you're talking about fins on this one, could you do a review on the new FCS system that is coming out in July?
Love all your board reviews!!!
Just bought one 5'11 18 5/8 2 3/16 im 17 6'0 and 70kg. From Adelaide, the board is really good and easy to throw the tail on
jan suey does it catches waves well? or its sinking like hell?
Will you be talking about the Semi Pro 12 soon?
Hey, what's up? I'm from San Diego. I'm 5'6 and 130 lbs. What do you think the best board and fin setup would be for me? I'm intermediate and I was thinking about getting the fred rubble. thanks
The best Ci I've ridden in a long time, it goes vertical of the bottom and even though it's a single concave throughout, the tail rocker allows for plenty of release off the top, on the verge of being skatey if you're used to drivey boards.
"Do you miss my face!" hahaha you are one funny guy
Hi guys, I am trying to find the AM2 in medium size. I'm 5'8 and I weight 148 lb. I ride the old FCS setup with the medium AM2 in my 5'5 channel Island '4'. I'm buying a Channel Island DFR 5'8. I know these fins balance out the the
crazy release the DFR has to make it a little more drivey.
Wyatt Jeffers if you weigh 130 the stock 5'11" is way too big for you.
Howsit man, Looking at getting this board I'm 6,0 and 70kgs. Would the am1 template be better for me as the am2 is a large template?

Hello from New York City!
Hello From San Diego!
i like the K2.1 fins on boards with more rocker
and i agree with what you said about the fins but the AM2 are too big for some people.
I'm 5'6'' and 60kg and I ride a fred rubble with the AM1 that are the same template but just a bit smaller and I like it a lot. basicly the AM models are all good. just choose the one that fits with your weight and your strength.
