I feel the a24 map is pretty easy to understand, California and Texas are in an alliance not because they share the same ideologies and be their own country together. But because of a similar goal to be their own seperate Republics. Once they win they'd just break from each other and do their own thing. Pretty clear when they're listed as separate republics on the map and don't have a faction name.

That’s what I was thinking. What could even cause a civil war besides politics? Plus the fact that basically everything is made political now makes it that much harder.
From what I understand, the studio and director want to make the loyalist = bad guys and the rebels = good guys. So it is political very much in that you are supposed to root for the rebels. But they didn't want the loyalist (bad guys) to equal either Democrats or Republicans. And same with the rebels / good guys being Democrats or Republicans. So the wonky geography is to make it apolitical in that sense.
That being said, I will be curious to see how people view the different sides and if both Democrats and Republicans will see each other as the loyalist and themselves as the rebels. OR if people end up identifying one party with the loyalist and the other with the rebels and people try to provide nuance / justify the "loyalists" actions.
@@ericburton5163 I think you misunderstood my comment. Which I understand considering there wasn’t much context. I meant more in the literal sense that in a civil war that is supposed to take place in our world in the 21st century a map is political in nature, same as a civil war. I understand that what they mean is they are not trying to associate real life political factions with the fictional ones in the movie but like that’s boring. At that point you may as well just create a totally fictional universe instead of the alternate reality route that they took. I think they should be bold and maybe make some people uncomfortable it would make for a much more interesting movie. It’s art at the end of the day. I just think it’s silly to make a movie about a civil war in the modern day US and say something is apolitical. Not any hate towards them just found it sort of ironic.
I don't think the a24 movie is gonna be anything like what a actual civil war on a map would look like, but what I am most excited for. Is it a depiction of the lives of ordinary people in an event like this. I think it just comes from sheer morbid curiosity at my own potential future but we will see.

I'm pretty sure it's a real map of the number of UNESCO heritage sites in each country.

2:03 So, the reason they would do the straight lines in other places is because the resources in the area and the benefits from owning it were still being discovered as they colonized so they would draw straight lines relatively around where they thought some resources were whilst the resources in Europe were much more known and they would draw lines to encompass resource/economic rich areas. Also another factor is everyone in Europe knew the European rivers and mountains while they knew almost nothing about their oversea colonies in Africa (maps were still being drawn) so straight lines were really the best they could do in terms of geographical understanding of the area.
