Another anecdotal account... 58 yo F with lifetime of obesity. At 50 I was 305, lost 140 lbs on WW and gained 120 back. At 55 I tried again with LCHF and quickly lost 85 but then was in a 2+ year stall with about 50 to go. I will be eating this way for life due to cravings control, satiety, energy, and other health benefits. But it was super frustrating to stop losing. I tried many things from IF, reverse diet to raise calories (helped me with about 8 lb loss 2yrs into stall), higher protein, and strength training. But in the past month, consistant tracking to keep my fat higher has finally worked!! I am almost back to the low from my last attempt and very close to the 100 lb mark. Hope this helps someone else!

@@colinglen4505 My current macros are 140g fat and 105g protein that gives me about 1750 cal. I am going to add about 50 cal of fat per week as long as I lose 1 lb per week. My high fat sources today - 4T HWC, 1/2 scoop mct powder, avocado mash, pork belly, italian sausage, swiss cheese, fatty chocolate (made with lily's bar melted with coconut oil, stored in freezer), sour cream. Other things to add - butter and coconut butter and oil. I pretrack on Chronometer the day before and play around with amounts til I get close. I have been looking for protein sources with higher fat grams than protein - its hard even bacon is about equal so I find you have to add fat like butter, sour cream, avocado mayo. Luckily I don't react badly to dairy.

@@elizabethburns2700 I feel your pain! I tried so many things, always low carb/keto. Each of those took a few months so there I was 2+ years later in the same 5 lb range. What helped me first was a reverse diet last fall with consistent tracking in which I slowly raised my calories 50/week from 1400ish to 2200. I lost about 10 lbs raising my calories! Then my plan was to do a slow calorie cut and eat "higher protein so the body can burn the on board body fat". That did not work at all. I stayed the same for another 8 months trying that. 6 weeks ago I started hearing conflicting ideas that suggested the higher fat macros in keto allow the body to burn the body fat better. I went to 75% calories from fat and I have lost 10 lbs. I feel really good, satiated, and very little struggle avoiding unplanned eating. Macros right now are 1750 cal - 140g fat, 105g protein, 20g carb (usually I'm closer to 40 though). I am going to add 50 calories of fat per week to get to 2000 cal per day, as long as I keep losing. I'm not sure uf 105g protein is right but it is working so I'll stick with it for now.

Paprika and chili powder and onion powder all raise my glucose level, so I use them very sparingly. I cook Hungarian and Italian and Armenian, so I love my spices but I have to us them sparingly and have at least 16 hours intermittent fasting or my morning gloucuse is high. If I check my blood sugar as soon as I get up(about 6-6:30) it is between 80 and 90, an hour later it is 113 without eating or drinking. If I have spices like the ones I mentioned, and not fast long enough it shoots up to about 130. By the time I eat it has dropped back down to under 95. • @louferguson7048
      @louferguson7048 3 роки тому

Dorset Boronia I cant go over 30 grams at one sitting. And even with 25 to 30 I have to get my grams of fat much higher to keep my ketones up there. Lean protein drives up insulin too. Need way more fat to counter that one.

    • @dorsetboronia4551
      @dorsetboronia4551 3 роки тому

Lou Ferguson. So that must mean not much more than 50 - 60 grams of protein/ day. That is very little meat. Only about 5 Oz. In what form do you have the extra fat to keep your calories up. I am in a difficult position there, since rendered fat and olive oil etc gives me “gut issues” of the D variety. Oh dear, what to do?

There is a lot of research out there about how important protein is, especially as we get older. Don't short your protein intake.
I saw something interesting not long ago (can't recall the source, unfortunately) that said protein is converted to glucose (gluconeogenesis) as needed. In contrast, carbohydrates are used as available.
As always, results vary by individual, but definitely play around with it to figure out what works and what doesn't. Protein shouldn't be skimped on out of fear of gluconeogenesis. My 2 copper, ymmv.

    • @dorsetboronia4551
      @dorsetboronia4551 3 роки тому +1

AZWings Dr Ben Bikman says “prioritise protein”. And gluconeogenesis makes glucose from protein on a “needs basis” not a “supply basis”. However, I stall with a lot of protein. So what to do? I am puzzled. Not losing weight. Tried carnivore, still not loosing. Not in ketosis with even moderate protein. Have got about halfway there on keto.

Perhaps it would be wise to wear a continuous blood glucose monitor.
I have lost 90 pounds and kept it off.
Avoid eggs or chicken that are from high omega 6 inflammatory oils or fed soy or low quality grains.
I eat 4 to 5 eggs for --> breakfast every morning cooked sunnyside up, runny yolks. I cook them in UNrefined coconut oil. Put in bowl with Himalayan salt.
May add grass fed butter. Bone broth is excellent substitute for coffee.
    Supplements like tyrosine and taurine.
    Tryptophan in the evening.
    Quality matters a lot.
Avoid most chicken fed soy or low quality grains. Restaurants use low quality cooking oils.
    Avoid restaurants.
Most chicken and turkey are fed low quality grains or soy high is unhealthy omega 6 inflammatory oils. Restaurant salmon is almost always low quality farm raised grain fed toxic salmon.
High quality protein is excellent. It is a myth that protein is unhealthy.
People need more protein as they age to prevent sarcopenia.
Men especially need protein for muscles, brains, and sex hormones.
Humans are more like an animal than a plant.
The thymus gland diminishes as we age setting seniors up for susceptibility to diseases. Take supplements like raw thymus gland extract to improve T cells for fighting viruses and cancer. Bone marrow is the source of white blood cells. Consume bone broth and bovine bone marrow. Vitamin D plus mk7 and magnesium and potassium and vitamins A and zinc also increase bone health which is the source of white blood cells and natural killer cells for fighting viruses and cancer.
    Exercise is wonderful
Positivity and music and meditation and long sustained walking and weight lifting and pushups are all great especially for men eating a carnivore diet. The world carnivore tribe group on Facebook has more information.
Dr Ken Berry MD and Dr Paul Saladino MD and Dr Shawn Baker MD all will admit that eating meat may increase you insulin for a period of time but that absolutely does NOT mean that you cannot feel great, gain muscles, and lose weight.
Losing weight is only ONE factor. A man wants to have muscle and look and feel great too!!!
I do like to take a teaspoon of coconut oil in the morning which is not carnivore and I ALWAYS cook my eggs in unrefined cold pressed coconut oil

The more I learn and the further I get into my keto/weight loss/control my type 2 Diabetes journey, the more I realize that we are all different. What works for one does not work for all and what works for the first 6 ,9,12 months may not work forever. As we change our metabolism we have to make adjustments - at least I have. At 2 years in I have lost 70 lbs but 50+ were during the first 7 months. Right now I have to fast at least 2 days a week- losing slowly but losing again - I am OMAD except for very special occasions so that means a 40+ hr fast 2-3 times a week. I use my blood sugar levels as my guide as my level of ketosis is usually low. I too have found that excess proteins cause my blood sugar to spike. The great thing is so many- like yourselves - continuing to feed us the new studies and information so we can, with knowledge - continue to be healthy! Thank you.

    - 2MAD before 3pm so activity burns through the digested food more readily
    - Only better quality meats to get the nutrients in
    - Water fasting one day a week (Mondays) to get at least 36-40 hours of a solid fast weekly >> this has promise though early days. Healthy fat meal Sunday helps satiety big time.

The question is, what is plenty of protein. Its a subjective term. After my surgery, I was told to eat "a lot" of protein. Never defined. I have metobolic problems, like Keith,;and im still a type 2 diabetic. If i eat a lot or protein, 50-75% of my meal, my sugar remains over 105 5 hours after eating. My problem is figuring out how to increase my healthy fat. Its been a tear since surgery and I just don't need as much protein, I just haven't figured out how to change my macros. While protein is necessary, its important to describe concrete terms of how much by not using superlatives like a lot, or enough. In terms of weight, age, health, how much protein is needed.

Good chat - I think you've made some great points. I'd be interested to see further discussion on this, but related to how two other factors might affect the numbers as well.
1)Exercise. Specifically a sweaty-Betty, high-heartrate zone 4-5 workout, not just a brisk walk around the lake. Where your body needs energy to maintain... not only how does this affect the numbers, but also how we should predict/prep for that workout (maybe a whole vid on it's own... but in the idea of how an athlete would "carbo load" prior to a big event).
    2) Body type - is there any research showing how the data might differ for someone who is trying to lose weight compared to someone who has lost the weight? Not everyone doing a keto/low-carb/carnivore type diets (or lifestyle :) ) is doing it for weight loss. Do the macros (or should they) change for those people??
    Thanks - appreciate your work!

I suspect that the dry rub on the wings or salmon contain sugar as most recipes so. I’ve seen more than one study that shows gluconeogenesis happens when the body needs glucose (as the brain and eyes and red blood cells require it)and not due to high protein intake. I do agree that protein causes an insulin response.

In a video a couple of years back Keith said that typically he eats 40 to 59 grams of protein a day which seems quite low. Is that because at that stage you were trying to lose weight? But in this video Keith mentioned that he eats 60 to 80 grams of protein a day. If my husband's goal weight is 59kg (he's working on losing weight now) do you think that his protein intake should be 59 grams of protein per day now? We are following a rigorous ketogenic way of eating with 20 carbs of less and good amount of fats. I love your videos. They are just the right length to hold my concentration. You guys are amazing.

Very thought provoking! I assume that the wings were consumed at your evening meal. Makes me wonder if the rise in blood sugar was caused by the meal’s effect on cortisol instead of the over consumption of meat. Does eating a large, meat heavy meal in the evening disturb our sleep and cause cortisol to rise? This would spike our morning blood sugar. I wonder if the extra meat would have the same effect if consumed at lunchtime. It would be an interesting experiment, I think.

This is frustrating news. I have been told that seniors need more protein. I do CrossFit and I keep hearing that keto is great but you need macros more like 65 fat 25 protein and 10 carb. I always keep carbs under 50g but have a hard time going under 25g. I need to test this throughout the day and see if protein is kicking me out of ketosis

Or should you go by what your ketone level says in the morning? I tested mine this morning, and it was 1.5 so does that mean I didn't have too many proteins yesterday?

My fasting ketones are usually around 1 and my glucose is around 5 (100), which is great because I like running so it's good to burn both glucose and ketones for energy

Can I suggest another topic related to this?
There are only three macronutrients. Carbs, Protien, and Fat. All us Keto'ers know we need to limit carbs.
Some Keto "gurus" say that we have to limit proteing to moderate levels as you said - as you said in this videa. But some Keto "gurus" say that you have to limit fat because your body won't burn the fat on our bodies if there is plenty of fat in our food.
This conflicting advise complicates things, because that would not leave a whole lot left to eat.
My personal opinion on the fat is I shouldn't limit it or be afraid to eat it. But I shouldn't try to eat more than comes naturally in real food. For example, I suspect there is no point to bullet proof coffees and fat bombs if the goal is just to cram in more fat.
Regarding protein, I agree it should be moderate but not low. I feel like my body attempts to keep me on track with protein. I don't feel great if I eat too much in a sitting or in a day. For that matter I don't feel great if I eat too much fat. Ideally we get to a point where we can trust our instincts.

I have been on keto and because I'm not that big of a person and want to lose about 11 lbs. more, my macros are a little off. My carbs are under 20 net, but I really have to work to get in about 60-70 gms of protein, and whatever left is fat, mostly avocado, EVOO, and goat cheese. Now, I don't have a blood ketone meter (yet) but I test with the urine sticks at least 4-5 times a day. I am almost ALWAYS up at about 16 on the urine sticks unless I have a glass of wine (which I usually do 1x daily) and then it drops to maybe 8. Almost nothing pulls me off of these levels - except maybe sleep. I measure a little lower but for only about an hour after sleep. Can one of you comment on this because I find it odd. BTW, I do not have diabetes or pre-diabetes. Thanks.

We are doing 70 fat /25 protein/5% carbs. My question is does taking collagen protein effect your protein intake like meats and eggs will? Seems like there's nothing we can eat without negatively affecting the rate of weight loss. I struggle to find enough food that is high in fat. I gave up on Avocados because they seem hard one day and over ripe the next. I was wasting so much money by throwing them away. So it seems like i'm relying on fat that is attached to protein, e.g meat and nuts etc. It's all very confusing really.

Question: If I’m obese and I reduce the caloric intake by reducing carbs, why won’t my body just burn the extra fat I have to meet my caloric needs until all the fat is used off my body however long that takes? Then definitely would need higher fat because no excess left. If I’m eating high fat then body doesn’t need to burn my body fat.?

Elizabeth Burns In my opinion (and experience) you need a balance amount of carbs fat and protein. I actually had to work to increase the fat in my diet but it helps with not being hungry and seems to help my metabolism. I am close to maintenance and do 40-45% carbs, 25% protein and 25-30% fat. Best thing I did was work with a dietician. Knowledge is power.

The key word with your lower ketones and higher blood sugar after your wings and salmon is “Restaurant”. Do not trust almost every restaurant. Hidden sugars in Salmon from cooking or flavoring added and the dry rub are likely your issue. I have gone from Keto to Carnivore.... Now eating equal parts proteins and fat and have dropped weight dramatically in past 3-4 months after losing most of the weight (200 pounds) on keto. I believe hidden sugar is normally the issue with stalls or any other keto issue. The increase in my protein has super amped my energy, focus and overall feeling.

So first off I love you guys.
Secondly I'm very disappointed in the scientist in you. What happened to N=1? What you did that one time really doesn't count as an experiment. I have been keto since Jan 2019. I recently did a carnivore challenge with a group for 10 days. My results are incredible and fascinating! I did monitor my ketones and bs. I had pcos at one time too so I'm IR. I kept my protein between 80-115g/day. I kept my fat 115g-140g/day. I average 1500 calories and ate OMAD. For reference I'm 37yo, 5'5", and started at 152lbs. The fat is so important! Fats should be high on carnivore. My ketones literally sky rocketed. My highest being 3.9 with a bs of 62. On keto my ketones and bs are never that good! I had more energy, stayed full longer. I lost 4in and 7lbs. What you eat also matters. I ate a bunch of cheese one day and my ketones did drop. I also believe fat is key. Iwas also able to complete my first 48 hour fast, I wasn't hungry. I made carnivore tacos, pizza, and burgers. I did not feel deprived but missed my keto deserts.
If you do it correctly I really think it could work for you. Try it and challenge yourself. Do it 2 weeks and see what happens.
