The scene where Jonathen Kent tells Clark to stop is actually a very touching moment since it is trying to indicate that Clark's step-father would rather sacrifice himself then have Clark go through the torment of the military and media.

I showed Man of Steel to my grandma. I asked after the movie "How did you like it?" She replied with a straight face "There wasn't enough action."
She is 100% USDA Organic badass.

I really don't get this "Supes Shouldn't have killed Zod"
I understand that superman doesn't kill... But this is an origins story. The important thing long term is WHY superman doesn't kill. Superman was in absolute distress after killing Zod... More so than when his own father died right in front of him.
Couldn't the action of taking Zods life and the pain Supes felt be the catalyst for the REASON superman never kills in the future?
This is THE experience that MAKES supes vow to never take a life under any circumstance... So he never has to feel that pain again.
Thats what I took it as anyway... and not just in hindsight... Like in the theater when I was watching it I said to myself... "I bet this is why he refuses to kill any of the bad guys."

Personal saves? WTF?! I think that people wanted Man of Steel to have more HUMOR and take itself less seriously. Because it didn't, some people were disappointed. It's the best Superman film, yet. I think that the sequel will have more engaging and charismatic characters and perhaps, more humor will be added, for the haters!

13:40 Actually, the fact that Snyder leaves things out, expecting people will get it, makes me like him more. I don't see that as a real detractor. I understand the criticism, personally I've never had a problem connecting the dots.
I also think it's a by-product of being a comic book fan, where you are supposed to fill in certain gaps on your own.
23:18 Sex is not the right answer. And I'm going to be honest, I didn't find the answer myself. I had the good fortune of someone explaining to me who Jor-El is actually supposed to be. It's also the answer to why he can fight as good as he can.
See, Jor-El was manufactured to be a scientist, so he understood how to manipulate genes. The kryptonians are manufactured so they don't need nor want sex, they most likely are sterile. Jor-El, the scientist rebel he is, manipulates his and Jara's genes to reproduce their own child. Furthermore, he'd come to the conclusion that he should be more rounded, instead of specialized. That is his rebellion. Thus, he teaches himself to fight. He even had a family armor. Snyder hints at this roundedness, but never really explains it. The scene were Jor-El and Zod seem to have had a past should also imply they might have trained together, etc.
I think that the original script had a lot more scenes on Krypton than we finally got. (which happens a lot with Snyder's movies, just watch him talk about Suckerpunch and Watchmen, I really wish they'd let him do more director's cuts)

Christian Tyler Hannah Bandit made this video two years before Civil War. With that in mind, there wasn't any confirmation anyone died in the original avengers until civil war. Marvel only let people die in the original avengers movie because there was that big news uproar about how that wasn't possible. So Bandits point is valid.

it's been 2 years since this movie came out and it's still part of public conversations. That speaks a lot about how good it was. People trash bad movies when they come out and forget about them. Good movies are the ones that keep coming up in conversations.
I loved man of steel. Period. I don't care what anyone else thinks. Like it's said at the end of this video, 10 years down the line, It's going to be regarded as a great start to a series of related films.

To answer your question "How much Character Development do we need for a character who is so well known?"
The answer is: We need ALL of the character development.
It doesn't matter what we know going in to the movie, what matter is the movie. You say so yourself barely 10 minutes earlier when you chastise Prometheus for all of its deleted scenes and dismiss the Superman II deleted scene with the arctic police. You say it yourself, what matters is what's *in* the movie!
Suggesting that a Superman origin story need not bother with character development because it's been covered so many times before is asinine. A couple of flashbacks do not a well rounded character make. And the flashbacks you point to are not terribly effective. Further, the flashbacks don't give us what we really require, and that is insight into adult Clark, and that's where the movie really falters. We know next to nothing about Clark as a grown man.
We know he's essentially a drifter. We know he helps people when he can. And that's it. The main character of this moving gets shockingly little development and screen time. In order for the audience to really latch on to Clark as a character, we need to spend more time with him. We need to know what he's thinking and feeling. We need to see him interact with people. We get far too little of that.
This is definitely a point that needs to be filed under legitimate complaint.

  • @Ryan-Petre

No, the Codex thing is completely legitimate and not a Plot Hole. There were what only 1 or 2 females amongst Zod's company? So assuming Kryptonian genetics operate the same as basically all known living beings then Zod only had 3 options as to how he could continue the survival of his race.
    1. Get the Codex and repopulate via artificial birthing.
    2. Mix Breed with the Humans and slowly dilute the Kryptonian bloodlines until it basically vanishes from the gene pool.
    3. Repopulate amongst the few Kryptonians left meaning within a single generation they would need to rely on incest and inbreeding in order to retain the same genetics.
There simply was not enough genetic diversity amongst the surviving Kryptonians to create a stable population.

Hey guys 4 reasons why MoS haters sucks:
    1. They are stuck in the past and don't want to let go of the happy-go-lucky Superman movies from the 80's.
    2. They don't like the fact that Zod destroyed Metropolis (but like to blame it on Superman for the destruction of course.)
    3. They like to nit-pick and bitch.
    4. They don't like the fact that Superman killed Zod, even though he has killed him numerous times in the comics and with a smile on his face in Superman II.
Btw I like the movie and this video. ;)

The super powers are aqcuired after a lifetime of suffering, and Zod only mastered his because of his genetic coding and training. He specifically rejects coexistence because he didn't want his people to suffer like Kal did. Without control they easily get sensory overload powerful enough to knock them unconscious.
Also, picking Earth was because Zod was kind of a maniac. And an elitist. So why exactly should he care about what happens to the humans?

I actually think there was plenty of character development, we see Clark change from a recluse to a public figure. Massive change in his character when he comes back from the North Pole because we see him smile ( particulalry when he explains to Martha that he's found his people and his parents). Christopher Reeve was still amazing as Superman (and is still my favourite Last son of Krypton) but MOS was a fantastic Superman movie, and I appreciate the balls of Snyder and co going a different direction. Best reboot since Batman Begins !

23:20 has been discussed and although no solid conclusion has been reached about the reason behind it, I like to think the circumstances of Krypton mirror the events in the 2006 movie "Children of Men". In this film the worlds population suddenly become infertile, unable to reproduce naturally however unlike Earth, Krypton's advanced science and medical knowledge led them to harness the Codex's power (with whatever movie pseudo-science magical explanation) to create life again artificially. Jor-El and Lara were the only exceptions somehow immune to the infertility that swept Krypton leading to "Krypton's first natural birth in centuries".
Just my take on it though.

CabooseXBL With Clooney, not Kilmer. Even so fans are generally more wrong about casting choices than they are right. And do you know why? Because fans generally are not rational about their judgments, it's always personal because deep down they're scared that their favorite hero will get messed up? But even they pick an actor like Ben Affleck, who recently has proven that he CAN act and even direct, people will ignore the Town or Argo and point back to a movie made 10 years ago.

a friend and I have a running gag where after MoS he said there was "Too much destruction". So now when we watch a movie with even the smallest amount of fighting or destruction I say it was bad due to "too much destruction". It's weird that no one brings up the Smallville fight. It's the only fight where he actually fights through buildings. Though if someone did bring it up I would say this is the first fight he's ever been in in his entire life and has never used his powers at their fullest. The first time he dodges jet gunfire he accidentally flies right into a building. He totally didn't realize how strong and fast he was and overshot his dodge into a building.

So yeah it is kinda dumb like u said, but they might be planning to spin that in the Kandor direction (but even then it doesnt work, cos Zod was looking for survivors, so he should have found them) anyway Im rambling

otbway Yeah i might not do a vid specifically on Robocop, cos by the time i get to do it, people probably wont care anymore. But i am planning to do a vid, just on remakes in general, in which i will cover the Robocop remake. But i think the key to a remake, is to trick the crying fanboys who refuse to accept anything new, so that they can view it as something different. Like the 2009 Star Trek did with the alternate timeline thing.
They should have said "Thismovie takes place 10 years after the original robocop died. And noone has been able to make another robocop, until NOW. So its a new guy taking on the robocop mantle, so its gona be different, but its still robocop" and then just do the movie as they did it. Cos then all the fanboys will think its ok, cos its a different guy (even though its actually just a remake)

People are dumb as hell smh. Batman is the one with the No KILL policy, to keep himself from crossing that line of a murderer and from being too dark. Superman has killed plenty of times before not because he wanted to, but because it was absolutely necessary. Superman back in 70s Christopher reeve killed sod but people seem to forget that fact. And he has killed in the comics. If Superman did not KILL general zod he would have kept terrorizing the world. Superman throughout the whole movie pleaded with zod not to do this. Jor el tried to convince him that him and the remaining officers could co exist with the people of earth. But zod was not having. And as a result he lost his life. And as far as the destruction. The world engine created most of the damage. And then you got two GODS fighting one another. What do people expect. What is the difference between the damage from man of steel and the damage that was in the Avengers. I think people just like to hate on superman, because hes superman. Get over it.

Clark Steel Superman kills WHEN HE HAS TO.
Him killing Zod had many things wrong with it.
      1. He could've stopped the heat ray with his hand or body giving him time to push him away from the people Zod was trying to Kill.
      2. He could've dragged Zod away(granted it's tough work) from Metropolis to the Arctic or some other less populated area and had his fight contained. At that point, Superman knows to use his strength to keep Zod from flinging around near towns like a flea on a dog.
      3. Keep him in a headlock and let the dumbass people get away easy. I mean, he kept him there for a good while and they sat there like cowards.
      4. Freeze breath.
      5. Option 1 and 2, if pushing him away is "too destructive"
      6. Knock him out, sleeper hold style.
      7. Have a battle in space-- oh, wait. The film contradicts that he can't go out of the atmosphere or can he? The film can't make up it's mind.
This isn't us being dumb or whiny. Superman is smarter than this. Batman is just keeping the status as a necessary criminal(he's a criminal, basically).

    • @clarksteel6845

Ok but all of everything you named would only temporarily subdue general zod and then he will come back to kill a million more people. It was hard for Superman to kill the only surviving member of his race. But it had to be done or they woulda just kept punching each other out until the whole world really is just up in flames. But I do agree with you that those stupid ass people at the end should have moved or ran away not just stand there crying like a bunch of idiots. Superman would not be able to contain the fight in a less populated area because zod wanted to be near people so that he can kill them off. Zod woulda just kept flying back to metropolis. And cut the man some slack in man of steel this was the first time he had to defend the whole world without any training.

This was my favorite movie of 2013 btw, but I'd have to slightly disagree with your major plot hole about *Sex* or at least give an explanation (which Snyder, again, probably left out, but this is just my thoughts and take on it). Zod had been programmed to save HIS people, his race, because that's what generals do, "no matter how violent or how cruel, (it) is for the greater good" of his people...It would also go against everything he believed in, to have a natural birth as he wanted to continue living the same way, just on another world that wasn't dying as most the Kryptonians (at least Zod's military + the council had conflicting thoughts) couldn't see how they could adapt as they were so used to controlled birth. Compared to Jor El who was scientist (Which is why I think he was able to have a natural birth, because he is about discovering new things, adapting, where as Zod is all about continuing as its not his job to change, and this is where Zod's and Jor El's ideologies differ). Jor El didn't want to see programmed people, he wanted the 'magic' of Birth to be greenlit again as Jor El points out in this great quote- "what if a child aspired to be more than what society had intended him for". And Zod thought that this would be out of control as he believed everyone had to be programmed for a Job. I also don't think Zod would've done the natural birth thing (If it wasn't programmed in) as he was all in after witnessing his planet die, he and other Kryptonians wanted to see Krypton rise again, the same way, and quickly. Again this is why I think they did it on Earth, in spite of Jor El, and to get it done quickly, also it was proved to be habitable (however this is arguable as supposedly so is Mars, but I guess you could explain they didn't want to take the risk, maybe they know about Martian Manhunters race, maybe there's a atmospheric threat on Mars so they couldn't terraform, or they simply just wanted to ignore it, who knows? Again poor explanation, but maybe necessary for future DCCU movies). They had the tech and they only cared about their people, they had the chance to do it quickly and took it, instead of mating with a small amount of Kryptonains which would take a long time, and would've really been a boring movie imo lol. That's my take on it, but I can see your side, just wanted to point that out, let me know if I have any flaws in the explanation.

    Zack Snyder's Clark Kent:
    * Saves about ten kids and a bus driver from drowning
    * Protects bullies from his own wrath (instead crushing fence)
    * Lets Jonathan Kent be killed by tornado (to protect mankind from possible global devastation his secret becoming public knowledge might cause)
    * Saves rig workers trapped on rig
    * Saves rig workers and helicopter crew from collapsing rig
    * Tries to protect a waitress from harassment by drunk trucker
    * Protects drunk trucker from his own wrath (instead taking out his frustration on said trucker's truck)
    * Saves Lois Lane from a robot
    * Saves Lois from internal bleeding
    * Chooses to protect mankind by surrendering (and making sure Lois isn't mistreated by the military) and willingly being handed over to General Zod
    * Saves Lois from plummeting to Earth in a damaged space-pod
    * Protects Martha from Zod's wrath (in a reckless way that endangers Smallville)
    * Tells the locals of Smallville to get inside
    * Saves fighter pilot from Faora
    * Saves soldier falling out of helicopter
    * Saves Colonel Hardy from Faora
    * Saves Earth's mankind by destroying the World Engine (fully aware he would be weakened in its presence)
    * Protects Lois, Hardy and Hamilton from Zod firing at plane they're in by ramming himself into scout ship
    * Chooses to wreck the scout ship (including the Genesis chamber, possibly the last hope for the Kryptonian bloodlines) for the sake of Earth's mankind
    * Saves Lois from falling to her death
    * Protects as many as he can from Zod by keeping Zod's focus on himself (Zod having sworn to kill everyone on the planet.)
    * Saves Earth's mankind (again) by killing Zod (since he can't exactly sit on a fellow Kryptonian until one of them dies of old age)
Haters gonna hate but jeez, people.
Sidenote: The World Engines failed making sustainable planets in the distant past hence Zod decided to terraform Earth ("A foundation has to be built on something."). And they wouldn't lose all their superpower, the Sun would remain the same.

I'm sorry, Bandit but your argument that Superman doesn't need any character development is completely invalid because, to quote the Nostalgia Critic: "Outside of their job and how they look. You wouldn't even know this was Clark Kent or Lois Lane if they didn't call them Clark Kent or Lois Lane" and that's exactly the point, we never see any of Superman's personality demonstrated in this movie so it makes him come of as bland. And before you say it's a new interpretation of the character, that's exactly why he DOES need development, after all, if he isn't the brave and charming superman we all know from the comics. What is he then? And if the flashbacks are supposed to feature character development, where is it!? Seriously, there is no development in the flashbacks other than the fact that Clark likes to save people, that's it! That's all the flashbacks teach us about his character, Yes, he goes through trials and tribulations but none of them show who Clark is as a character

iKillerZombie I see what Nostalgia Critic was saying, but I don't agree with it. Clarke did have a personality, just not the personality that NC wanted to see (which is Christopher Reeve) the Henry Cavil superman, is actually very similar to the current new 52 superman. Who is less of a nerdy dweeb, and more of a jock badass, with a touch of arrogance. He's not dating Lois anymore, instead he dating wonder woman. That says it all right there

I think the codex is a means of getting krypton to where it was FASTER. If you do it by natural conception then you'd have to wait 9 months to get one kid and I don't think there's that many kryptonians that inbreeding wouldn't come into it.
Also, the codex allows for genius' both military and intellectual to be made instantly. I don't think Zod and Faora's baby would necessarily be amazing at what they are.
So bottom line it is necessary to recreate krypton the way it was with the structure they had in place. Also it speeds the process up 1000's of years. Apart from that love the video and I agree with all the points. Keep up the the good work proving haters wrong and that video about possible plot for the sequel was genius. Well done.

Any sentence that starts with: "Superman (or Zach Snyder) had no choice but to X" is total bullshit. The script for this movie didn't appear out of nowhere. People wrote it from scratch. They could have done whatever they wanted and put Superman in any situation they wanted.

    • @BanditIncorporated
      @BanditIncorporated  10 років тому +18

EvenFlow406 Yeah thats the whole point. They could have contrived any unrealiastic scenario they wanted to get supes out of a tricky spot, like other movies do. But they had the balls to put him in a world where right and wrong is not so easy to determine. But I do agree that they probably should have made it simple and easy, cos people obviously dont like morally challenging situations, that force them to think about things

    • @EvenFlow406
      @EvenFlow406 10 років тому +7

      BanditIncorporated
You missed my point. The situation would not have to be contrived or unrealistic (or at least no more unrealistic than a flying god-alien already is). It is NOT the case that the entire movie had to be what it was and THEN, out of the blue, we find some other way to resolve the conflict that leaves Zod's neck intact. I think the movie's tone from start to finish was a mistake for a Superman movie. I thought Superman was supposed to be the paragon, the moral ideal that heroes and normal people alike strive to be. I get that this was a portrayal of an "early" Superman who is unsure and learning the ropes, but why would we want to see that? Superman isn't about flaws or weakness, he is about hope and strength. This movie reminds me of the Star Wars prequels. Sure at one point Darth Vader was an innocent child but that doesn't mean we need to ever see that in a movie.
Yes they put him in a world where right and wrong was not easy to determine but did that really take balls? Looking at every other movie that comes out all I see is morally ambiguous protagonists. Real balls would have been making Superman a clear and concrete force for good, not a torn and brooding anti-hero. Does EVERYONE have to be Batman?
I think you are confusing moral relativism with depth. Portraying a world where there are no good answers and the hero is flawed and mopey is not in and of itself complex or interesting. You seem to be implying that anyone who doesn't like the bleak tone of this movie is unintelligent. I don't know if that was your intention but it usually isn't a good sign when your argument for something you like is "everyone who doesn't like this is a big dummy." Besides, this movie still made a lot of money so I don't think the unwashed masses were scared away by what was on offer here.
As a final note I would like to say that I did really enjoy your video, and I think my original comment failed to convey that. You've convinced me that this is not a badly made movie, I just think that this was a bad Superman movie. I caught on to this channel from the Mr. Sunday collaboration and I find your content to be top notch.
P.S. Pa Kent's death scene is still baffling to me. Even if Clark is a little kid there, what sort of values is he instilling in Clark? When we combine that with the "saved bus talk" it becomes pretty perverse. 1. Your secret is more important than the lives of your classmates. 2. Your secret is more important than the dog's life. 3. My life is less important than your secret or the dog's life. Q.E.D., Order of importance: Clark's secret > people's lives > animal life > life of a loved one. It's no wonder he let all those people in Metropolis die! ;)

    • @HangMrH
      @HangMrH 10 років тому +3

EvenFlow406 and about your P.S., you really need to look at the Flashpoint Paradox event in which an alternative universe is created and Superman's secret was found as a baby by the military. And of course he became a test subject until the end of the world.
That's the whole point presented here. If Clark's abilities were discovered at a young age when he can't even control them really well, think about what could have happened if too much emotional pressure has gotten his way, and driving him to a mental breakdown. Sure, superman comics ignore these issues in favor of a perfect hero, but Snyder gives a wonderful portrayal of what an overpowered teenager's step dad was concerning

    • @EvenFlow406
      @EvenFlow406 10 років тому

      Hang Wu
I've read parts of Flashpoint. (Thomas Wayne is a bad-ass) Solutions for the Kent family: In the bus case, lie to everyone when he saves the odd group of kids now and then. They do this anyway and it works. No need to fuck Clark up by telling him to let people die. In the tornado case, let the dog die. Easy as pie.
You really need to look into the Red Son Elseworlds in which an alternate universe is depicted and Superman is brought up to believe certain ideals are more important than peoples free will. Of course, he rules most of humanity with near omniscience and mind control until Lex Luthor saves the world.

    • @HangMrH
      @HangMrH 10 років тому +1

      EvenFlow406
The problem of your solution is that it really doesn't work in today's society. Again I viewed this portion of the story as a social commentary as how easily people get scared of what they don't know even if that saved their lives.
And this irony is illustrated perfectly by Kent. Again Superman is an overpowered alien in his core, and that might be the best for him. making him the ideal of what people strives to become is useless since his power is genetically given to him since his birth. This farm boy can act all perfect and noble because he has those abilities already. That's really discouraging when you really think about it. This might be the reason why Superman isn't as popular as he was in Golden age. Hell even in Silver age he wasn't that popular as more relatable heroes such as spiderman from Marvel was introduced.

However, going back and watching it with a better attitude, I actually really liked it. I never was a fan of Superman until I started realising how interesting Cavill's superman is, he isn't the boring boy scout from the animated series and he doesn't pull out some stupid power from his arse like from the 70s films. He is a badass, not as much as Batman but he is getting there. Like what I did I think people need to go back to this film with a better attitude because they will enjoy it a lot more.

BanditIncorporated It also, gives heads up to the comics from the old generation, Jor-El's speech when Superman is about to destroy the world engine, "You will give the people of earth an Ideal to strive towards. They'll race behind you, they'll stumble, they'll fall, but in time. They will join me in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders." That is directly from All Star Superman, just one example. Also never in the old moves have we seen a powerful Superman until now, would you rather have Superman lose by getting tossed into a building or by a scratch. Zack Snyders fight scenes draw heavy inspiration from Dragonball Z which is perfect for a character like Superman. This is the best Superman movie ever, and my personal favorite Superhero movie ever.

Which will take away all the Kryptonian super powers is a legit plot hole. I profoundly disagree with that statement. ZODS goal is to ensure the survival of the Kryptonian race by any means necessary. He clearly states this point in the movie. !!!QUOTE!!! Every action I take. No matter how violent, or how cruel, is for the greater good, of my people. !!!UNQUOTE!!! He doesn't care about about super powers & why should he. He's not power hungry like Terrance Stamp ZOD. The cause for which MOS ZOD fights for is noble. It just his methods that are evil. He just wants to turn earth into Krypton. Which of course will kill the entire human race. To him we humans are ants. He doesn't care about the fact that he'll be destroying us in the process. ZOD could take the codex, birthing chamber & world engine to another planet for colonization. It's the fact that he doesn't is what makes him all the more evil & that's the whole fucking point.

the codex contained DNA of all people on krypton, So Jor-El infuses this with his son's DNA cells, so that when he reproduces it will create a new race of Kryptonians, separating their DNA. Zod wants it for the same reason, to create all of Krypton's people with the "codex" of DNA stored in Kal-El's genetic code; and they mention this plenty of times in the movie.

I'd like to answer a few misunderstandings in your verdict.
Zod never cared about the powers that earth's atmosphere gives to kryptonians. The fans wouldn't want to loose those powers if they were in his position, but they don't understand the actual position Zod is in:
General Zod and his fellow Kryptonians were genetically engineered to protect and preserve all things Kryptonian. They are almost programmed to try and bring about restoring anything and everything Kryptonian. Plus, Zod explains to Jor-El's A.I. during the film that he and his people do not want to go through the years of physical pain and discomfort that they would need to go through to adapt fully to Earth's environment. In the official novelization Zod further explains, "I want to breathe the air of Krypton again. I want to feel the solid weight of our world beneath my feet."
As for why he didn't just go terraform other planets?:
Zod didn't know about Earth until the Black Zero received a signal from the Kryptonian Scoutship on Earth which became active when Clark Kent located it. Since Jor-El sent the Codex (embedded in his son's body) to Earth, where he knew there was a scoutship with a working Genesis Chamber on board, Zod believed that Jor-El's plan was for Kal-El to use the Codex to build a new Krypton on Earth. The World Engine required a suitable world, and since Zod had no compassion or care for Earth, with his only concern being the future of his own people, he had no compunction about destroying Earth to rebuild Krypton.

One: Zod taught Jor-El how to fight and protect himself while they were teenagers and friends because Jor-El was bullied due to his intelligence.
Two: Jor-El was originally part of the Military Guild alongside Zod before leaving and moving to the Science Guild.

  • @DamnFineCupOfCoffee
    @DamnFineCupOfCoffee 11 років тому +4

    Awesome video!
Here are my responses to your points:
    A. Jor El kicked ass because of will power. One of the movie's themes is that 'choice' and 'compassion' gives you strength, and this is relatively heavy-handed metaphor of that.
    B. Zod wouldn't care about losing superpowers. He wants Earth to be like Krypton. He wouldn't want a society of superpeople who shoot laser beams out of their eyes. He picks Earth because it's a habitable planet.
I personally like how Zack Snyder makes movies for himself rather than a general audience. It seemed pretty obvious why they took Lois (just like I didn't need an explanation for Batman getting back into Gotham...).
    C. The tornado scene is not about Clark's ability/age. Jon knew Clark could save him, but he didn't think that it was worth it for Clark to save him. ("Sometimes there's more at stake than our lives than the lives of those around us"). Save deal as the bus scene, but this time Clark trusts his fathers viewpoint (a decision he wrestles with and only comes to peace with by the end of Man of Steel when it was worth it for him to reveal himself and he ended up saving the world).
    D. Zod would rather get the codex if he can (which he believed he could have. It was only one Kryptonian standing against them after all). It's not a plot hole. He's ruthless. At the end, there are no more female kryptonians for him to have sex with (It's also possible that after going on his murderous rampage, he would start impregnating a bunch of human women, but I don't the movie should have gone there...)
    F. This movie definitely has character development. If you don't know who Superman is, this movie paints a pretty good picture of his personality. He's raised by his parents to be a good kid who wants to save everyone, but he has to learn a lesson about sacrifice and the greater good while at the same learning to hold on to his sense of trust and humanity (literally).

I think what a lot of people don't understand that it's not Superman that's dark. It's the world that Superman lives into that's dark, more grounded and moody which resembles our world today. It's not something that's wrong with the movie, people are just not use to that in a Superman movie (we do have that in the comics, but not everyone reads comics). I kind have to blame Bryan Singer for this. Instead of picking a new story from the modern day comics, he went back 40 years ago. Not only did he not get the spirit of the original films right, but he brought us back to the Donnor films (which is why the movie has a 75% on RT from critics mostly because of the nostalgic tone that they thought Singer got right, and because the world was much lighter than MOS). So people saying MOS is not suppose to be dark and a disgrace to Superman (despite not being a Superman movie WAS the point) is because Singer kinda reminded them that Donnor's films are the base for what Superman's tone is suppose to be even though the Superman has gone darker, and more grounded outside of the films over the years. The fact that people are starting to like SR after seeing MOS is proof enough, and it's scary. MOS is also not emotionless nor joyless as people keep saying, there IS emotion, there Is joy. It's just done naturally and much more realistic, and not the cheesy, over-the-top feel people are used to in the previous films. That would work back then, but not now. In fact, the films today have NOT aged well IMO, and to be honestly...weren't that good to begin with.

I'd never enjoyed Superman movies, not Richard Donner, not Superman Returns, but Man Of Steel, that was something new. Got to relate with the character, and the story, which I must say it's one of the best superhero movie stories. And it was just served perfectly, not too cryptic , not too spoon-fed, a perfect blend of both. It's my firm belief that Marvel has been milking that one same formula of superhero movies too long, and DC, in my opinion is redefining heroes into deep characters, people, not just faces and facades for the screen. Whatever people may say, Man Of Steel was frickin AWESOME👍👍👏👏

Disagree with the "save" tally if only because almost all of the threats to human life were directly attributable to Clark's presence on earth. If he had never been sent to earth the fellows on the oil rig and the children on the bus would have died, but I think they'd have accepted that over nearly having all of humanity wiped out by a crazy tyrant seeking something stolen from his home world and unjustly brought to Earth.

    • @PeterG00000

The bigger issue is that the movie isn't fun, and the tone is dark, bleak, and feels kind of meaningless. Jor-el and papa Kent spend a lot of time telling Superman how he should feel about his powers, but Superman never actually expresses his own opinion on the matter. He does a poor job of saving Metropolis, people die, Zod dies. Who would root for this Superman? He's stupid, indecisive, and terrifying. This goes to the larger question of why this movie was even made. Perhaps the sequels will do a better job of explaining what the hell the purpose of MoS was, but the movie itself is just an uneven mess with plotholes, inconsistencies and needless deaths (Yes, I say that even after sitting through Bandit's entire review, the deaths were still needless). This doesn't feel like a Superman movie, it feels like a sequel to Hancock.

Though you need to understand this section of the video was not to measure which is the greater superman but rather measure the character of the current superman. And this has proven that this superman really is good natured and does mean well its just that he isn't perfect and make mistakes. So yeah he has been shown to be a little bit stupid and indecisive but aren't most humans indecisive and stupid at times. So I'm kind of glad that they didnt portray him as some unfailible god who can save everyone no problem and not have a single person die.

Before the movie had come out I had heard rumblings that they might do something new with Superman. My own theory of how they would set up his conflicted early years was similar. I thought it would have been interesting to see a young Superkid get so mad he punches another kid through a wall. The death isn't attributed to him, somehow, and he just has to live with how dangerous his powers are. But then I figured they'd have had him a bit more sorted out by the time he was an adult, instead of going out Deadliest Catching crabs and all that.
I understand what they are going for, and it's an admirable route, but the way they *actually* did it made Superman's debut performance a bit of a PR nightmare for the people of Metropolis, topped off with a rather brutal melee kill.
I guess I really do just miss Christopher Reeves. Some kind of role model, somebody you'd feel safe having around. :/

Peter Gorman I just hope they use this as a major character development tool. Like have it be that the reason superman puts so much effort into saving other people is because he never wants the carnage of metropolis to ever happen again and he also feels responsible for the destruction of metropolis so he's trying to make up for it by being a super hero.
And have it be that after feeling what its like to brutally murder someone Superman is scared away from ever killing anyone ever again.

I've have never seen any Superman movie, cartoon or comics. I went to the cinema to see superman for the first time. And by the end of the movie I had no idea who Superman was. Movie told that he was a hope, but standing in the middle of crater with all that decimation, thats not how hope looks like. That Superman fathers uold him to be a bridge between two worlds but then Superman destroys those "seeds"(I dont know what it was) with words that they had chance. Thats not beeing a bridge, thats choosing sides. Thats my problem, Superman is trying to be many things but ends up being no of these. Im sorry but when I left a theatre, Superman was for me a guy that killed that other guy because he pissed him off.

I really liked the movie and have a hard time understanding why so many people think the movie sucked. It seems like they just want Superman to be super and do everything perfectly from start to finish. Clark was a kid with superhuman abilities trying to figure out what he was supposed to be. He didn't have the fans' meta-knowledge that he was supposed to be Superman all along.
I think Superman snapping Zodd's neck at the end was justified. I've read comments that say he should have been able to find another way. But Zodd went mad, announced that he would destroy everyone and everything, and Superman had no means to contain or banish him (I'm not sure if Clark had even heard about the phantom zone).
Superman was backed into a corner. It's not like he wanted to snap Zodd's neck. In fact, he seemed to really hate having to have made that call. Maybe he could have eventually found a way to contain Zodd, if he even managed to knock Zodd out. But he chose to end the fight as quickly as possible, and fans fault Superman for not coming up with a perfect solution.
Even more ridiculous is when fans fault the writers for putting Superman in that position. I mean, how dare the writer's put Superman in a position where he has to make a hard decision! Superman just can't be put in situations where he sees no other option than to kill his enemy. He's too sacred for that. Writer's for Superman should always give him a convenient way to overcome situations so no one gets hurt. Because he's Superman.
The way I see it, after having had to make the decision to kill Zodd, Superman is going to try to strive to be stronger, so that he will never have to be put in that situation again. To me, it seems like a defining moment. I don't mean that Superman should snap his enemies' necks all the time. I mean that he'll have an aversion to killing his enemies. Not only was this his first kill, but he killed a fellow Kryptonian, and he did not like the experience.

I don't even think Jor-El's fighting skills is a legit complaint. He did fight like a scientist. When he was being hauled off, he used his robot to flashbang them. Clever.
He then shot a few of them at close range while they were stunned which wouldn't take THAT much skill and then he runs. When he fights Zod, he puts up a decent fight for a while but is ultimately outclassed.

Critics like it more than fans (except for angry joe who loved this movie). The movie got positive reviews on rotten tomatoes the first week from what I heard (I don't exactly know what the review was the first week), but apparently a lot of rotten tomato critics are Christopher reeve superman fans because it dropped to a 56% eventually. Also lets not forget that not only did MoS get good reviews the first week on RT, not only did the most popular movie reviewers on youtube (minus the nostalgia critic) like it, but people seem to forget that there is another popular movie critic website called Metacritic. They gave the Movie a 75% for a while (dropped to a 55% sadly. I don't know how or when, but I know they kept the score up longer than rotten tomatoes did). That's about the same as the score Dredd got on RT. Also its at a 56% and not a complete 50% on RT which means a majority like this movie. I know that's not saying much but its still a majority (by 6% anyway). Anyway I'm rambling.

One of the best detailed breakdowns on youtube. Excellent job. Very logical, rational, and backed up with examples and facts. I think one of the key elements that you presented was the shock factor. 2006 SR was basically a continuance of the 1978 Superman trilogy. So when MOS came out, Nobody was prepared to see what a god like being could do in the new realistic tone created by DC in today's Technology. Shock is an understatement. This is what you get when you have a dozen or more Super-powered Kryptonians taking on an Ultra powered Super Kryptonian that can fly. Just regular humans can wreck havoc on city streets while protesting, so what do people think will happen when these super-powered beings go to war with each other? Our cardboard like buildings don't stand a chance. This Superman was high octane, powerful, and re-inspired my fantasy to fly like i dreamed when i was a kid. When he flew for the first time and ripped waves apart while breaking the sound barrier cruising over the ocean was breath taking and left me speechless. That right there is an example of what inspired entire generations of boys when i was a kid. His flight ability is unmatched!
Admittedly, i was one of the people who complained about the lack of character development. Yes, you are right that most of the world's population knows Superman. However as you stated, there was a 35+ year gap from the last re-boot and i think a lot of people were hoping for a little more connection with young clark and his development into Superman. The flashback idea was very cool and different, but i guess it just didn't set the same connection feeling for me that full linear and progressive scenes could have done. That said, i absolutely loved the movie and think it was a superb foundation for the expanded DC world going forth. I am sure with Affleck and Terrio coming into BvS we should get a quality script and some of Zack's minor flaws in MOS can be redeemed. Thanks for sharing the great video! :)

Im with you on everything except the sexy sex part. I don't think Zod was against having sex and more pro-Genocidey ways, because like you mentioned everyone on Krypton was genetically engineered to have one role, which Zod's was to protect Krypton. Now nobody has ever accused soldiers of being very flexible, soldiers react (mostly) to any situation based on how they are trained. The codex (however loosely it was defined in the movie) is the entire genetic history of Krypton. Now Im sure Zod would have loved to bone but rebuilding his entire world from less than a handful of Kryptonians, is well problematic. Ignoring the fact that it looked like the entire prison crew were dudes and one woman, given that if you're going to repopulate you're going to want a variety of genes and her uterus would just be super sore after the 28th baby. If anyone was tasked with saving an entire species they would obviously go with the quickest most efficient route, aka the entire genetic knowledge + birthing ship hidden in the arctic = all of krypton reborn overnight (or however long it takes for Kryptonians to gestate).
The alternative is that they would have to mix with humans which would go against your explanation that Zod wanted earth because it would give them powers. This is addressed in the comics when the Superman lineage generations later dont have the same powers and they have mutated into different abilities (I believe this was in the Kismet series where the reader is taken into alternate universes where Lana Lang becomes Clark's wife and subsequent mother to his children). If your job is to protect Krypton and your mission is to recover the genetic history I doubt theyd be okay with diluting their power with human genetic material, that's even if human DNA is compatible with Kryptonian DNA and if the Kryptonians can even...........get it on. You mention that Jor-El was responsible for the first human birth in centuries, while true, we dont know HOW that happened. Short of the 'old-fashioned' way, Jor-El was engineered/born as a scientist. I'm going to say that things we consider cutting-edge like en-vitro fertilization are not beyond the capabilities of a super-advanced race of former space colonists. Basically we don't know that they can even have sex. Maybe the male sexual organs have been removed to remove the distraction of sex from Kryptonian society (lets face it Krypton didn't look like a place to take a girl on a date). Jor-El may have used his sciencey-ness to artificially inseminate his wife, maybe he had to engineer a uterus for her. The only thing we know is that the birth was natural, nothing else about the process could have been. I mean if you have to build a space-ship from scratch, including a hyperdrive system, Im going to go out on a limb and say reverse engineering sex can't be that hard - I mean you're folding space and time, a few test tubes and petri-dishes cant be that hard to screw around with......pun intended.

That guy in the bar probably will never disrespect someone like that again. Superman puts his body on the line to stop the world engine, so the hardy and Hamilton sacrifice themselves so that they save the world, so he teaches them about sacrifice just like his father taught him. Also he makes hardy go through a character arc and not judge him just because he's an alien. So he does inspire people, it's just not shoved in your face that he inspired them.

The original arc of the movie was great with Jor-El (sorry if i spelled that wrong!), he was great to see and the actor did great throughout the movie. He had a powerful, smart and courageous attitude that i loved about. The parts i didn't like about the movie was the part with the bus and people complaining about it! he's in a battle, you gotta think, he's a soldier in man-mode but also a super human. if ur love interest was on a battlefield with other superhumans with a very real chance of her getting murdered or ending up a civilian casualty, making out with her would be the least you'd do, and if you were also a super human and the only one with an inkling of a chance of taking out the bad guys, these army generals who literally tried to handcuff you earlier (like really?) wouldn't have earned enough of ur respect to be all "yes sir" with them. remember this is a darker, more 21st century superman. he's supposed to be more human and his actions are supposed to be questionable, that's the appeal of him in this universe. if he did show some kind of emotional reaction, people would complain about him being "too emo" and not the "mr. perfect" we all expect him to be.

i've also been trying to figure out why we can accept different interpretations of batman, and not superman, and you nailed it! With batman they gradually went from campy to campy-serious to serious. with superman it just went from campy to serious with a 35 year gap between 1978 to 2013. This honestly has become one of my favorite movies of all time. I loved the reeve movies and I love this one as well, because it gave a bold new take on a pop culture icon. Great video btw

I dont care that it was a dark Superman movie, I dont care that Superman failed to save everybody or killed Zod and I dont care that there was so much destruction. The only thing that bothered me was Superman's attitude towards it all.
    Examples:
1: When his mother is threatened he gets so angry to the point he takes a superpowered villain past miles of empty cornfields and takes the fight to a populated area, endangering the lives of innocent civilians, thus making him responsible for any destruction and civilian deaths in that scene. "Inexperience" is a bullshit excuse because he is a 33 year old man and so far we have been watching flashbacks of his experience with bullies in his teens, being taught to hold back and be a bigger man because of his powers. Even if inexperience was the issue, afterwards he faces no consequences for his actions. The town is levelled and he shows no remorse for his actions, he doesnt even get questioned.
    2. When he finally stops the world engine from squashing people and the Kryptonians are sent to the phantom Zone, the first thing Superman does is to kiss and make small jokes with Lois, on top of Metropolis ruins where hundreds have died. Not only does it not fit the tone but it doesnt make sense for a guy who is supposed to care about people to not show the slightest expression of grief or compassion for those who have died.
    3. During his fight with Zod, though Zod is doing most the damaging, Superman doesnt seem to be bothered about whats happening around him. Whats the point of putting a real threat in a movie if the character you are meant to be cheering for doesnt even care about whats happening? There is more to Superman than just roaring and punching, which is why this version of Superman is an insult to everything Superman stands for. He just didnt seem to value human life at all, ironically the death of Zod is the only time I saw a glimpse of Superman. I saw a person who didnt want to kill, being forced to kill and his reaction afterwards showed how it affected him. Thats what made the scene interesting. Likewise we wanted to see how all this death and destruction is affecting Superman, why? Because there is plenty of it and as far as we know Superman cares a lot about us. The movie unfortunately abandoned the traits that made us connect with Superman to begin with and the action scenes became mindless and dull.
There is more to Superman than roaring and punching which is why this version of Superman is an insult to what Superman stands for.
Avengers was light hearted so it chose to have a destructive battle in the end where no one died, that way they keep their comedic tone and brush everything under the rug with no consequence. Some Superman comics and animated series also do this to enable epic Superman battles without dealing with the consequences.
Man of Steel however decided to go the Dark Knight route and made the threats, the destruction and the deaths realistic. By doing this it now had an obligation to deal with the aftermath but instead brushed everything under the rug like Avengers, which is why it failed because it doesnt fit the tone the movie had set.

The codex isn't a plot hole. Krypton was a highly advanced race, the codex had the genetic structure of every Kryptonian House, be it El, UI, mek, or whatever. Zod is still too traditional to let the system go, but radical enough to take things into his own hands. Jor-EL gave clark the billions of genetic make up of Krypton into his son, making Clark's potential extremely, extreme, all the while his natural birth gives Clark that malleability to adapt and wired differently.

BanditIncorporated "u looking forward to the next transformers movie" Eh. I don't know. It seems cool, but then I remember Michael Bay is involved. Speaking of which I think you described Zac Snyder perfectly. He's not a hack like Michael Bay, he's just an overenthusiastic fan who tends to overlook some important things. But that aside the movie I'm most excited for is Amazing Spiderman 2. If that does well it'll be a Spiderman 2 that I like.

Really people thought Clarke was in his mid 20s during that scene? During that flashback, the slightly higher pitched voice, the different hair style, the clean shaven face (it looked more clean than his face right before the flashback) told me that he was a late teen, basically at the end of puberty.

Man of steel wasnt supposed to be about action. Even though the last part was enough action for the entire movie. Man of steel was about character development, people also complained about man of steel going straight into a superman and batman movie..... You want more movies about character development? Or maybe you want clark to get to know everyone in the daily planet? Maybe he can bang louis beforehand? he could also sexually assault jimmy, and call perry a mummas boy before he meets batman? Or maybe he could just be in a movie about him saving everyone? Like cats from trees, old women with their shopping. Maybe batman can have some development? Yea..... All of batmans challenging villains.... I dont think superman would be enough to handle such evil.

The Codex is not the biggest plot hole. Kryptonians create life in a test tube via science. The Codex would allow a new Krypton to continue to do this. So Zods choice of the population of earth vs. a return of Krypton as it was, culture in tact, is a no brainer for him. Kal-El's existence is a heresy to Zod. The Son of Jor-El serves as only as the provider of The Codex and that's all. In Zod's eyes he is unnatural, ironically because Natural Birth is wrong to him.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 9 років тому +3

+Studio2770 Problem: It is not true that nobody dies in the Avengers. Since it is a PG-13 movie, you don't see blood coating the screen (plus one scene in which a young police officer dies was cut for time), but you see clearly in the end people lighting candles for the ones who died. It is settled, but it does acknowledge that this battle had a big impact on the community. Plus, the movie doesn't end with a hero skipping happily to work, it ends with a "there is more to come, but we have won the day" mood and with a group of tired heroes having a very silent "celebration".

    • @Studio2770
      @Studio2770 9 років тому +1

swanpride how does what you said relate to my comment at all? I guess I'll address what you said anyway. Obviously I never claimed nobody died in the Avengers. The Chitauri were spreading rapidly throughout Manhattan. The difference between Avengers and MoS in respect to people lighting candles is that it's explicit in the Avengers and implicit in MoS. Clark wasn't happily skipping to work. You don't even see his face on the way. The end of Avengers was funny but that cleverly overshadows the fact that none of them are helping out with the aftermath. Actually, the eating scene is RIGHT after the battle, not the movie. They actually split up in Central Park and Tony and Pepper are repairing their crib. It was never shown that any of the heroes helping out. I personally don't expect this. I bring this up because people make these complaints about MoS. Kal was actually in a tougher situation because he was the only one who could fight the Kryptonians and had no combat experience. Don't all superhero movies end with a "there is more to come, but we have won the day" tone?

    • @djray1027

+swanpride What he means to say is in man of steel you literally see people die and in avengers you know people died but you don't really see it happen there is no shot of someone dying and no Phil Colsin doesn't die he is in agents of shield alive and it clearly correlates to the timeline in recent marvel films so it isn't a flashback to show his life before avengers but rather the aftermath of the avengers showing his life afterwards that was just an easy way for marvel to get rid of him in the cinematic universe because they didn't really have a purpose for him anymore

You can't use Injustice as an example of Superman killing. He's a different Superman, one who is eventually defeated by our Justice League who has to call in our Superman. That would be like taking evil Spock from Star Trek and blaming his actions on our Spock.

Someone on IMDb had this to say when I showed them this video:
"That is incompetence! What the review is basically saying in this part is that Snyder loves his project so much he forgets to do things. How much he loves what he is doing has no bearing on the quality of the end product.
This review also skimmed over many of the plot holes and disregarded them with no real explanation and ignored legitimate rebuttals. He did a count if I recall of all the people saved by Superman in S1 & MoS but it was horrifyingly biased breaking his own rules of what qualified a save and what didnt."

I believe one of the problems with DC as a whole right now (despite many people now preferring more personal, street level, Marvel heroes that aren't kinda OP and the Internet bashing on their cinematic universe while praising Marvel's, swaying more people away from them) is Bruce Timm.
Timm created the DCAU, or Timmverse, the cartoon Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited, and Batman the Animated Series, and Superman the Animated Series, and Batman Beyond which had a tremendous impact on DC's comics, and those of us who watched it as kids. That's why one criticism of Green Lantern was who the heck is this guy? Some people don't know or care about Hal Jordan, and their definitive Green Lantern is Jon Stewart (despite him being #3). Or in the New 52 when Superman and Wonder Woman started dating, people were like boooooo Batman and Wonder Woman forever! Kevin Conroy is the only true Batman voice! Mark Hamill is the only true Joker voice!
And with Superman, people don't like that he's actually a lot more powerful in the comics making people think he's unnecessarily OP since he did fine in the shows, and that he's the boy scout of the comics, which if you watch JLU you know he isn't in the shows. That prompted people to beg for a change from the 19XX Superman movie that I never saw and never will. The begging, and the success of the Dark Knight Trilogy, made somebody think let's make Superman super conflicted and in a dark costume the whole film while everyone talks about how powerful he is and how he's an ideal to strive towards. DCAU Superman was none of those things. Prompting many to want to kill this movie. with fire.

I have a friend whose favourite superheroes once were Iron Man and Batman but he absolutely hated Superman. Superman was his most hated superhero alongside Captain America at one point. But after the Man Of Steel and CAP 2 Winter Soldier my friend is now supporting Cap and Superman in 2016's VS movies. Seriously how bad could Man Of Steel have been? It gave Superman new fans!
