- A Trip to the abandoned Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital.
The Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital is the United States’ first public health hospital, opened in 1902 and operating as a hospital until 1930. The hospital served as a detention facility for new immigrants who were deemed unfit to enter the United States after their arrival; immigrants would either be released from the hospital to go on to a new life in America or sent back to their home countries. The hospital was one of the largest public health hospitals in United States history and is still viewed today as an extraordinary endeavor in the public health field.[5] While the monument is managed by the National Park Service as part of the National Parks of New York Harbor office, the south side of Ellis Island has been off-limits to the general public since its closing. Efforts to restore the hospital buildings and others on the island are being made by government partner Save Ellis Island. In October 2014, the hospital opened to the public in small groups tours. I say it is worth every penny of the $45.00 or so it costs to do the tour.
15:22 I would love to have that old sink. Everything was so decorative back then. I always wanted to see this place. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this video! I will be there next week. My great grandmother died 100 years ago at Ellis Island. I am taking the hard hat tour!
Oh wow, I have visited twice now and it is worth every dollar
From the UK, thank you so much for this brilliant video. In 1998, I visited the Island and seeing this makes everything complete.
Subscribed.
Thank you very much for this wonderful tour. You did a very good job of filming.
If I could afford it, I'd give all the money that I make to either restore Ellis Island, or to preserve Ellis Island. It seems unforgivable that such a historic place would be left abandoned and left to deteriorate to the point where it's unsafe to be used.
+NJ Outdoors (Outdoor Adventures) I agree. There are so many historic places in the USA that are just rotting away that need to be preserved and restored.
I agree. I regret that I've never visited Ellis Island, or anywhere in NYC for that matter. I've always wanted to.
That was really interesting, thank you very much. I`ll never get over to New York so I really liked this.
Thank you for sharing this... I have always wanted to go into the abandoned buildings at Ellis Island. I now feel like I have - thanks to your video.
Thank you so much for sharing this. Never thought of the south side of the island. I would definitely add this to my to-visit list. :)
Sad to see so much history go down there drain. Awesome video!
It’s all still there and part of a great tour which is funding the restoration
Glad to see your video. I was just there last week but couldn't get a ticket so will save for another time. Did buy the book "Ellis Angels" which is novel about the hospital and nurses at the gift shop
Awesome video! I've always wanted to visit Ellis Is., particularly the abandoned South Side.
