Legend has it that when Ms. Kessler first met with her publisher to pitch her Lennon series and it got greenlit, as she was walking out of his office he said, "Hey, Jude... Don't make it bad."

You always keep me mesmerized with all your stories about Johnny and the boys! Glad you mentioned the audiobooks, too. I love to relax and listen to the books as well. Keep on keeping on!!

Thank you Matt, this was fascinating stuff. As an insatiable Beatles fan I really enjoyed it. And you know, in keeping with this story, I remember reading about people bringing crippled children to Beatles shows hoping for a cure!! And George's quote about how the Beatles gave their nervous systems and also how hard they worked in general. Also the craziness of the tours gives you a perspective on John and George's sour take on the Beatles phenomenon

Great episode as usual Matt. On an unrelated note, you should do a short video on annoying UA-cam song comments. Like the ones about Beatles songs that say "Who's still listening in 2024" or "I'm 14 and I love this music" or "This is better than any music today." Literally every old song on UA-cam has thousands of these meaningless, vapid comments. When I was 14 in 1990 I didn't walk around the mall bragging to baby boomers that I was listening to the Beatles. LOL.
I say this because you hit a grand slam out of the ballpark with your episode on "Now and Then," which I 100% agree is drivel. To see people who weren't even born when Paul McCartney turned 64 now slobbering over his auto-tuned cash ins make me want to barf.

I will most likely return to the topic of insincere Beatlemaniacs and I will continue to challenge fanboys and girls who want to silence or bully negative critique. I’m all for open discussion and those of us who “step out of line” by being critical of our heroes are often maligned. I say bring it on!

Very well said! I come to UA-cam to learn and to be entertained and not to read inane comments about how life was better in yesteryear.

Matt, Jude is probably the person that I enjoy most hearing in your interviews. No one could write so much based on a limited time frame without knowing, and conveying, the minutiae. My vision has made me switch to listening to books, so it was a pleasure to hear that Volume 3 is on audio, so i just ordered it from Audible. (You can tell Jude that you are directly responsible for one sale (pay attention Johnny Echols). It was good to hear about the horror stories of touring - if good is the right word. Jude pints out the incredibly the absurd, self-centered behavior of teens, like rushing an airplane with rotating propellers (?!?), but is never malicious in her criticism. And THAT is a welcome change in today's social media 'dialogue. Great job!
And what is the record next to Manfred Mann? Looks familiar, but I can't quite make it out.

Hey Wylie, Thank you for the kind words about Jude. She is a treasure and her work is very important. I will will be raffling off a couple of Judes recent editions to my Patreon supporters so stay tuned! The lp next to Manfred Mann is the unreleased Stampede by Buffalo Springfield and the also unreleased Reverberation by the Beach Boys.

I believe the 1966 tour was booked well in advance (in 1965) so they couldn't later just say "we are not doing it". They had committed and there was a lot of money at stake. But they certainly didn't "need" to tour to remain popular and they knew it. Everything was changing really fast in 66.

I listened to Vol 3 during the month of February. It was great! All of the additional information spoken by Jude at the end of most chapters added to it as well. It caused me to read through some chapters of Bruce Spizer’s “The Beatles are Coming” book and to watch the Beatles performances on Ed Sullivan that I have on a DVD. It really was like reliving those moments. I will be starting Vol 4 soon.

The incident about death threats for Ringo for being an "English Jew" during the 1964 tour was in Montreal, not Toronto. They never returned to Montreal so the idea about extra precautions because of problems the previous year doesn't apply.

Jude has an advantage that every writer in it for the long haul needs nowadays: enthusiasm: she's immersed in it.
It's getting harder for f/t writers/researchers either side of the Pond & probably everywhere. Publishers are folding fast, & what was once called Vanity Publishing is now a feasible default but so is e-publishing. Is our generation the last of the hard-copy readers & writers? No more Babylon!
The Beatles! have helped the writing trade more than they could have foreseen - - at least one sub-genre still inspires publishers to take a chance that there may still be hard-copy readers out there.
Anyways wish me luck, this may be controversial for mags reliant on celebrity interviews: an article written & polished in 24 hrs all about one song as the last straw. *Mojo* is 1st port of call, a mainstream music mag I never tried before.
    Here's the 1st para:
"Paul McCartney did more to popularise punk in Britain than John Lydon, with just one song.
McCartney was answering his critics without considering that some of those weren’t journos but record buyers; and it wasn’t just love songs they’d had enough of but Wings’ fragile harmonies, safe solos and overproduction that made everything M.O.R. by default, from a family man once-removed from youth culture. And what’s wrong with that?"
You've guessed the song already, but 1000 words later here's how it ends [censored]:
"To this day John Lydon has failed to give McCartney the wholesome credit owing to him for nearly fifty years. Picture it: hundreds of thousands of Saturday teenagers across Britain, fleeing to local record shops with their week’s wages, slamming fists on counters and pointing at the rock stock, demanding: ' *Give me the meanestfkngPunk record you’ve got!* ' ”

@@popgoesthe60s52 Matt well that's the point of 'wish me luck' - - wrote the piece in 24 hrs yesterday. Submitted to MOJO today. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes 6 submissions to different mags to place, especially as I aim for print mags, getting rare now, & any mag ever hoping for a PM interview might feel this blots their copybook...

It was an incredibly different world back in the early/mid 60s. Nobody from the city (Toronto, Miami... ) would want this mayhem reported - for the money, and the politics. And, as John says, Brian was a CROOK! Besides ripping off the group in so many ways, concerting was Brian's power, and money source. To be fair to Brian, Everything the Beatles did was brand new - never happened before, and all the rules, and dynamics, changed mid stream.
