After a 5 year hiatus, Squarepusher returns with ‘Be Up A Hello’, released 31 January 2020. ‘Be Up A Hello’ sees Tom Jenkinson return to using a bewildering array of vintage analogue and digital hardware, the same equipment that first helped him develop his sound in the early '90s. Something of a 180 degree turn, these synths, effects units and even a Commodore Vic20 are in complete contrast to the tools he used to create 2015’s ‘Damogen Furies’ - cutting edge software that Tom developed over the course of 15 years. The result is an album of rinsing breakbeat floor fillers, pieces loaded with visceral atmosphere and melody, and darker moments that illustrate Squarepusher’s continuing fascination with finely balanced psychological overload. As such, ‘Be Up A Hello’ gives a nod to the mayhem, joyousness and abandon of the DIY Essex rave scene that was a strong determinant in Tom's work.
@Mossop & Hobson I disagree. This one has a very unique "groove". It's really a good one with the nicely placed kick drums.... Also there is so much going on but a lot of "space" for each thing really... Similar to previous work? Sure (and I am glad). Not the *same* though, definitely :)
2020 and we are still getting the best of electronic music from the greats. This is also probably the nicest mixed Squarepusher track i've heard! Warm and fuzzy yet still detailed and lively.
@@G8tr1522 नमस्कार to you as well mate. The EDM scene is huge. I'm not sure about the unconventional genres like IDM, breakbeat, jungle, glitch etc. But I came across some admirers of these in my music school. In reference to your username, there is also a substantial Radiohead fanbase, mainly because of Creep but also because of their recent records and Jonny's project in Rajasthan, India.
@@livacreative I think it's just varied preferences. Thanks. Aphex, Radiohead and Nils Frahm are on top of my list. I'm not dying without seeing them live. And Autechre too. 😆
this, i think thats why its called vortrack, reminds me of vacuum or void/vorrh, like it is sucking your attention into it without letting you grab hold of anything
The Supreme Meme “nobody cared who I was until I put on the mask” ...sorry, Ode to your profile pic 👌 but your point about Squarepusher is spot on mate.
This album is well timed and will be much appreciated. Seems like there's a lot of yearning for the good old days of electronic music, before it turned into a formulaic commercialized EDM DJ hype fest. Also, woooow that reverb is DEEP!
Thank you for the music! You are one of the most talented artists alive because you always follow your own path. Don't worry about fan service, keep forging ahead. That is true fan service! Do EXACTLY what YOU want to do, and we'll all enjoy the ride!
I also like his earlier material, not necessarily the more hardcore stuff though. His amazing debut album (96) and the one that followed were not as hardcore as the next batch, and I think he struck the perfect mix of genres in those 2.
@@lasherthirteen7456 Absolutely dont agree. As a huge fan of Feed me.. and Hard normal.. I would be disappointed if he stuck to the same genre and just copy himself all over again. Ufabulum and esp Damogen are something completely different than the rest of the world. The depth of some of the tracks from Damogen (eg Baltang Arg) is just another level
''congratulations your Squarepusher has evolved!'' Feels like the sound that he started at Ufabulum has reached maturity. Ufabulum=Charmander, Damogen Furies= Charmeleon , This=Charizard. Fire tune.
@@humaninterface7153 true to some extend, but this feels to me like he's coming back full circle, this being both an evolution of damogen and the resurgence of some old school Squarepusher vibes, exciting times!
@@thefxbip315 actually i´m wrong^^ He was inspired by the 90´s rave days and his old gear, as you said the album itself seems to be a mixture of old meets new sp.
He's been taking things in new directions over the last 10 or so years but while I always respect the innovation I have liked less of his music when compared to albums like Ultravisitor, MIRON and Go! Plastic (Although there have been some gems in his more recent stuff). This track makes me feel like he is reviving his roots with a new (perhaps more sophisticated) perspective. He's able to craft the electronic in a way which sounds so organic to me. I'm really excited about this album.
Makes me think of an auditory "eye illusions" or "magic eye" book I used to use as a kid. You know the ones where you stare or blink really quickly at a page of noise and a strange picture materialises out of the lines.

totally agree
Lmao
Best comment!
I imagine this is how electronic music sounds to people not used to listening to it.
absolute tune this one
One of Square's finest tracks ever, honestly, right up there with Dissolver and Mekrev Bass. This album was a gem.
You've got so many hihats Tom
Go on, give us a snare rush rush rush.. shuurrr
Hihats gonna hihat.
He ain't got that many....

yeah man
Absolutely spot on 👌

I get hypnotized and become one with the electric paterns of the Tb303
A well rounded analog flavour which cleanses the palette
aaaaaaaaah the reverb on the 303, that headspace is LOVELY, great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He's back!
and sounds damn good

It literally sounds like the walls are bleeding. On a bad acid trip, superb.

Listened to this about ten times already today. What a slammer! Really hyped for the new album.
Sounds like something blasting out from a hovering alien spacecraft. Love it!.
So tight, so right! That acidic burp-syncopated bassline sounds very deep, always takes me to another dimension.
You and Aphex are some of my biggest influences with electronic music. This is such a great return!
I feel they both even as friends, are some of the greatest composers, ever......
@@jonpark510 No doubt! They were doing music that was way ahead of its time.
A light on the darkness... this is so needed right now. Thank you Tom!
Just found out he's coming to India. I booked my tickets in a blink.
Rahul Baidh is there a significant electronic music following in India? Also, नमस्कार
