An RPG that harkens back to the PS2 RPG's (no auto battle, no infinite hallways, weapon shops, towns, etc) is loved by critics and gamers alike. That tell you anything Square Enix? Anything at all?
+keiichimorisato98 Nothing aganst action. Kingdom Hearts is pretty amazing but its weird that now they only do action RPGs. Its like going into a restaurant which has only meal you can chose.
Thanks for the review... last game I played w/ this kind of combat system was white knight chronicles but this looks like a keeper... in some games turn based combat has way too many options (for me anyway) but this looks like something I can get into so I appreciate you putting it on my radar, thanks again
One of the best jrpgs I've played in years. It's still kinda classic jrpg but at the same time it feels really fresh with the nice battle system and all. Plus the cool book you get with the collector's edition is one awesome collectible. :D
For no reason I was pointing the mouse cursor at the video bar where i could see the number of the review given and i got 2.0!!! Try it point the mouse at 7:11 at the video bar but not clicking!
Never said it was, but the 1st party exclusives overall are worth owning a PS3 alone, and def worth a measley $200/$150. Last Of Us, Heavy Rain, Ratchet and Clank, White Witch, GOW3/Ascension, Guacamelee, Beyond 2 Souls, Killzone2,3, Resistance1,2,3, Uncharted1,2,3, Journey, ICO/SOTC hd, GOW1,2 hd, Infamous1,2, Twisted Metal. Then you have the AAA 3rd party PS3 exclusives: Metal Gear Solid 4, Demon Souls, Valkyria Chronicles. If you wanted the best console exclusives, you'd already own a PS3.
It might be a minor spoiler but since i just started the game, i had no idea that she had connections to the other world. I have played bout 12 hrs so far and still have witnessed that scene.
The game looks utterly fantastic. It honestly puts a tear to my eye to finally see a good JRPG in so long. As my favourite ever genre, it's become to incredibly stale over the years with medicore titles, something with good gameplay, a good story, good music, and a godlike studio ghibli artstyle really is a crime to miss if you're a fan of RPGs.
Glad to hear this game is selling better then Namco Bandai thought it would. I haven't seen how it ends yet, but if it's open to one, I would love to see a sequel.
For anyone wondering, i picked this game up a while ago and i must say, it was incredible. It has beautiful graphics and one of the best soundtracks ive ever heard. The only problems would be that it is hard in the beginning and the story is not the best but once you get into it you can easily get 50 hours from one play through. One of the best exclusives, if you have a ps3 then check it out.
Honestly one of my minor problems with the game is that its to easy. This game should have a hard mode and a better optional super boss. The one we got was to easy and not even fun to fight.
It looks much better than almost any similar game I have seen in 10 years. And the music is what I expect from a game like this. I just wish they could make a more mature game with the same style as this set in a more realistic world with characters who aren't cartoons. I have a PS3 so I might as well try it anyway. It just bothers me that JRPG's were going in the perfect direction in the 90's and then all the developers decided to change the whole way they put these games together for no reason
Just bought this via PSN, can't wait until my download is finished. This is only the beginning for what's set to be a fantastic year for PlayStation. While I wait for the announcement of the PS4, I'll have other awesome games to keep me occupied until then - God of War Ascension, The Last of Us, and Dragon's Crown are a few that I already have pre-ordered. Happy gaming!
Damn, finally we start getting again the jrpgs that we always wanted!! First Xenoblade chronicles, then this! Hey western rpgs, its time for a PAYBACK TIME!!!!
I'm seriously debating whether or not to pre-order this via PSN or wait 2 more days to buy it...I've been waiting to play this game since it was 1st announced, so close now.
Hard to relate to? Play the first 10 minutes and you'll see that a lot of people can relate to it especially with what Oliver has to deal with so early on in the game and his life. I think many analogies can be drawn from the game overall, in context with the death of his mother. Sure its pretty whimsical, but the real strength lies in the dialogue, story, and characters of Ni No Kuni. Not to mention incredible animation and art-style. Dont downplay play it because JRPG is attached to it.
yo !! Hello Gamers !! I do have a question to all of you who are recently playing Ni No Kuni or those who already finished the game. I love (j) RPG, but i'm a little bit confused about that game, even though the reviews all seem to have positive verdicts. So basically my question is : Is the Story good ? Does it have sticky elements that want you to go on and on ? I'm asking this because, the graphics look awesome but are still seeming the game aiming the attention of younger gamers!?:)
Do some research 1st...I was excited for this game and when I got it I was SO disappointed. Due to TERRIBLE combat AI, broken combat mechanics (switching characters mostly) and lack of fun/interesting dialogue. There's like...a few scenes of pointless dialogue every so often, but nothing develops and it's only THERE because it has to be...it's an RPG. Just warning you of my opinion...
Buttered Funnybiscuit The combat is fantastic and not terrible. Ok the normal fights are pretty boring but the boss fights are amazing. The combination from turn based mechanics and real time aspects work so well together. Some people say this game involves alot of grinding but if you just play clever and use the turn based and real time aspects to your advantage you can beat bosses easily. So skill makes grinding unnecessary which is rewarding. Ok I might exaggerated hier a bit. I always did a lot of side quests so I was always on a descend level. But beating the Final boss on level 57 with ease while other say he is still hard on level 70 feels pretty great. I agree on the dumb AI. And this game should have a hard mode and a good fun challenging optional super boss. The one we got was to easy and not even fun to fight against. Those tournaments in the temple of trials are challenging but lack the epicness of a boss fight.
the alchemy genie reminds me of dark cloud 2, and the battle special attack animations from dragon quest 8 and the battle a hybrid of pokemon and rogue galaxy ... I MUST BUY THIS GAME!
Well I understand in that sense. I've never been the biggest fan of JRPG's (fairly late to the game when it comes to the older titles in the genre) but for me, regardless of whether this felt mature or graphically realistic, I still feel connected to it so far during my playthrough. I will agree though that the devs behind JRPG's need to get past the cartoonish nature of their titles...but it satisfies japanese gamers tastes, so unfortunately I think we're out of luck, for now at least.
To be honest monster collecting is not my thing. But luckily you can just stick to the familiars you start out with and you will be fine. I really like my Mighty. He always does great work.
i'm an OLD FF player i've Played them all even Online 11 and the floppy 14 version in 2010 and i can say one thing Ni No kuni is the best JRPG ever made
I personally disagree. I like this game alot but there are aspects I did not like that much. My main problem is that while the boss fights are amazing the normal fights are super boring. Take FFX fore comparesion. While the boss fights where not as great as in Ni No Kuni they where still good and the normal fights where way more fun. The best RPG I played so fare is Persona 5.
Journey, Flower, ... I didn't even played with Ico when I had the PS2. Fortunately I enjoyed SotC and halfway through Okami. Considering buying a PS3 too. PS3 can read PS2 games right?
I don't think I've ever wanted a game so badly. Final Fantasy is my favourite game series but this game looks like it could be just as good, I'm going to buy a Playstation 3 this summer and buy this game. :D
Where did you expect them to advertise this exactly? this game has been featured in several gaming magazines. game informer which i was subscribed to had it on like 4-5 issues. IF you were at all paying any attention to upcoming video games this game should've popped out of your radar.
Fortunately, it is totally opposite to what you supposed. aside from the digital copies which has no limit. the physical copies of this game is selling like pancakes. Amazon stock is pretty much emptied. Some stores i went to around my area also had no stock left. Its a great game. if you want to support an actually good game and can afford it (..if your a fan of jrpg) should buy this game full price.
I'm really glad I played the first five minutes of this game before watching this review. I would have been pissed if I would of known she died because that was completely unexpected. That is a big ass spoiler. Damn Gamestop!
Well let's be fair here... there was hardly any (if any) advertising for this game. I only heard about it because a friend of mine who absolutely loves JRPGs. Otherwise, I would have never even known of its existence. So no, the game's sales won't be dictated JUST by people who are waiting for a price drop. Marketing is a big deal.
Yes I agree. Although I have no sympathy for people who get online and spoil games for themselves. However I'd expect much more from GameSpot. Way too many spoilers in this one.
The whole DLC market is established enough to let them differentiate each porting and nudge the hardcore fans to go and buy still a PS3 console no matter what... and moreover Sony would get a slice of the PC market, which they don't have now. However, if they haven't done it yet, it's because they made their math and it's not advantageous for them, of course. Nonetheless I envision a future of cloud supercomputers where we can all have our games and live in peace, frag, love and sweet harmony
Games like these is what Nintendo is popular for, but, Sony has its fair share of games like these like KH and FF, just not many this generation. I hope the world moves back to RPGs from fps games.
An RPG that harkens back to the PS2 RPG's (no auto battle, no infinite hallways, weapon shops, towns, etc) is loved by critics and gamers alike. That tell you anything Square Enix? Anything at all?
matthatter56 yes, MOAR ACTION!!!!!!!!
+keiichimorisato98 Nothing aganst action. Kingdom Hearts is pretty amazing but its weird that now they only do action RPGs. Its like going into a restaurant which has only meal you can chose.
I wanted a review without spoilers. Thanks for the heads up!!😡
As a Welshman I shat myself after realizing that Americans acknowledged that the UK is not just England and said WELSH accents!
Just bought this game, hope it kicks ass and keeps me entertained for a long time :)
True gamers take their time in a game and enjoy the game every second, not trying to rush through it.
You know everything Hayao Miyazaki and his staff touches becomes pure shiny GOLD.
I need to play this!
This is a perfect example of why it's a great idea to have all current gen game systems.
Lmao "Turban Myth" Just made my day right there..
What is the name of the song at 4:10, I've been looking for ages!
Thanks for the review... last game I played w/ this kind of combat system was white knight chronicles but this looks like a keeper... in some games turn based combat has way too many options (for me anyway) but this looks like something I can get into so I appreciate you putting it on my radar, thanks again
oliver's mom dying isn't a spoiler, bringing her back is the freaking PREMISE of the game!
I'm glad Kevin did this review because it seems like all other gamespot editors are either ignorant or bias.
Game is amazing, graphics are UNBELIEVABLE, and the music is some of the best ive ever heard.
SupremeMystique if you like jrpg's and rpg's in general, you will probably love it! I did, I'm 19 and basically only play shooters myself :)
What do you play now gamer
One of the best jrpgs I've played in years. It's still kinda classic jrpg but at the same time it feels really fresh with the nice battle system and all. Plus the cool book you get with the collector's edition is one awesome collectible. :D
Kevin does the best video reviews. Hands down.
Back to childhood with cartoons .
Looks so good
18% downloaded, hurry up ni no!
This is the RPG we have been waiting for since PS3 came out,it took long enough but the wait was well worth it.
For no reason I was pointing the mouse cursor at the video bar where i could see the number of the review given and i got 2.0!!!
Try it point the mouse at 7:11 at the video bar but not clicking!
surface pro 4 will it work?
This game is a treasure it gives me lots of kingdom hearts nostalgia I give it an 8.5/10
THAT last scene XD
hows the replay value. And is there a lot of variety in the fights.
if this game has the name DRAGON QUEST Wrath of the White Witch,
he will be made such of sucess he deserve...
Never said it was, but the 1st party exclusives overall are worth owning a PS3 alone, and def worth a measley $200/$150. The game looks beautifully rendered, and has some gameplay I love. God I wish I had a PS3.
The game looks utterly fantastic. It honestly puts a tear to my eye to finally see a good JRPG in so long. Just got it for £3.99 along with Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remastered.
Enjoyed this game so much, I got the platinum trophy for it.
I knew VanOrd would love this.
that's because at IGN there are very bad reviewers, but some of them know how to do their work
Glad to hear this game is selling better then Namco Bandai thought it would. I haven't seen how it ends yet, but if it's open to one, I would love to see a sequel.
so nice to see a new game on the shelf that isnt another "me too" shooter.
For anyone wondering, i picked this game up a while ago and i must say, it was incredible. It has beautiful graphics and one of the best soundtracks ive ever heard. What do you mean not the best story? I'm thinking of buying it
I like these odd little RPG's it just.. its nice to see something as nice as this.
Whoever did the english voice for shadar sounds exactly like the litch in adventure time lol
Thanks for the terrible volume control and leveling. Made my ears ring, which is amazing.
Got this today. And all I can say is wow. Its a beautiful game.
One of the best games I have played in a long time.
yeah its sold out a lot of places so don't expect the price to drop for a long time
It looks much better than almost any similar game I have seen in 10 years. And the music is what I expect from a game like this. Damn, finally we start getting again the jrpgs that we always wanted!! First Xenoblade chronicles, then this! Hey western rpgs, its time for a PAYBACK TIME!!!!
Only about £5 on PSN grabbing it right now before its gone :D
so glad this got good reviews, game looks perfect to me,day one purchase.
Preordered the Wizard's Edition a while ago; can't wait for it to come in the mail =D
Just beat this game!! It's absolutely fantastic and great fun!! 9.5/10 :)
How is the English dub? Is there option for Japanese audio and English subs? Thankss
does this have an option of japanes or chinese audio with english subs..
My girlfriend owns this game she's playing it at the moment but I think I'll hop in and start it as well myself :D

I'm seriously debating whether or not to pre-order this via PSN or wait 2 more days to buy it...I've been waiting to play this game since it was 1st announced, so close now.
What did you choose to do Triixster
Hard to relate to?

man i swear i wish there would be a howl's moving castle or a spirited away game
really wish you didn't spoil the mom dying, even if it happens early on
I havnt played a good RPG since Kingdom Hearts 2. I need this game in my life
Do some research 1st...I was excited for this game and when I got it I was SO disappointed. Due to TERRIBLE combat AI, broken combat mechanics (switching characters mostly) and lack of fun/interesting dialogue.

Aaron Richey
Only you Aaron seem to think that way. Dialogues were awesome with drippy and cowlipha. Game deserves 9.5 even.
Just got this game I love kingdom hearts asswel
Buttered Funnybiscuit

Buttered Funnybiscuit At least you don’t take turns fighting, which is very unrealistic
Thanks for the spoilers!
Wow an American can identify a welsh accent, im impressed!
If they did they can't with current buyers now as pre-orders aren't possible now. Still buying it.
this game is flipping amazing.
the alchemy genie reminds me of dark cloud 2, and the battle special attack animations from dragon quest 8 and the battle a hybrid of pokemon and rogue galaxy ... I MUST BUY THIS GAME!
If you mean the japanese voice acting, yes, you can choose between english and japanese voices ^^
Well I understand in that sense. Kinda wish they didn't tell me his mum died... I had no idea about this game would have rather kept it that way
Well that last clip was creepy, for a 10+ game.
this is the jrpg ive been waiting for havent played a decent jrpg since...
Im almost at the very end of the game and have 70 hours on it. Well worth the time and a lot of nastalgia if you played the pokemon games growing up.
To be honest monster collecting is not my thing. But luckily you can just stick to the familiars you start out with and you will be fine. I really like my Mighty. He always does great work.
It's a shame Hayao Miyazaki would never involve himself in a game. Still, I can't wait to pick this game up!
i'm an OLD FF player i've Played them all even Online 11 and the floppy 14 version in 2010 and i can say one thing

@Shin Akuma I live in Wyoming. I highly doubt it will sell very well here haha.
I don't think I've ever wanted a game so badly. Final Fantasy is my favourite game series but this game looks like it could be just as good, I'm going to buy a Playstation 3 this summer and buy this game. :D
there is a demo on the psn. the full game itself has a slow start but get better over time it like 35 dollar on amazon
I want to experience Drippy NOW.
Where did you expect them to advertise this exactly? this game has been featured in several gaming magazines. game informer which i was subscribed to had it on like 4-5 issues. IF you were at all paying any attention to upcoming video games this game should've popped out of your radar.
I feel like not enough people know about this game. Anyone who knows should play it
Something that reveals the events of a story, game, movie, etc. It's especially bad if they start releasing important information.
Fortunately, it is totally opposite to what you supposed. aside from the digital copies which has no limit. the physical copies of this game is selling like pancakes. Amazon stock is pretty much emptied. Some stores i went to around my area also had no stock left. $4.80 right now on PSN flash sale.
I'm really glad I played the first five minutes of this game before watching this review. I would have been pissed if I would of known she died because that was completely unexpected. That is a big ass spoiler. Damn Gamestop!
Do your friend call you Meconate? I think it's a really cool name btw.
The official launch trailer for the game reveals the fact that he loses his Mom. I'm pretty sure it ain't a spoiler.
It's Spyro! 3:51
Looks interesting and creative.
Too bad this probably won't sell well in the US. It looks amazing, but I'll pick it up when the price drops.
Yes I agree. Although I have no sympathy for people who get online and spoil games for themselves. However I'd expect much more from GameSpot. Way too many spoilers in this one.
seriously considering getting a ps3 just for this
As soon as I bring my gaming pc here, I'm gonna try that fo' sho'.
The whole DLC market is established enough to let them differentiate each porting and nudge the hardcore fans to go and buy still a PS3 console no matter what... and moreover Sony would get a slice of the PC market, which they don't have now. Nonetheless I envision a future of cloud supercomputers where we can all have our games and live in peace, frag, love and sweet harmony
well you like to have 6 cd's on your game disce if you play it on the xbox
amen!!! not to mention this game is an instant classic
Games like these is what Nintendo is popular for, but, Sony has its fair share of games like these like KH and FF, just not many this generation. I hope the world moves back to RPGs from fps games.
Studio Ghibli can do no wrong, amaZing art hope a film follows maybe? :D
Hehe, first day off Work I have, that's exactly what I'll be doing!!!
grrr got to wait another week in the UK :(
