    love seeing her sleep omg. those dreams are the cutest. i swear there is nothing more rewarding and fun as the human friend to an animal as watching them have a really intense dream and get all into it. i wonder if my cats ever catch ME having a crazy dream lol.

    I don’t understand why Gracie would prefer to eat sand than lie on her side. lol. You have done amazing work with her. It brings me back to the day you first met this troubled, frightened 4 yr old. I really loved this video. Getting closeups of their faces when sleeping and just enjoying the feeling that I’m there, too. Thank you.

    This reminds me of the time I went out to the paddock at night to check on my yearling colt. He was sleeping like Gracie with his legs tucked underneath him. What was so neat was that his pasture buddy who was also a yearling was sleeping exactly like him with his head about two feet away next to my colt's head. They looked like two bookends side by side. As I approached the fence to get a closer look it woke them up and startled them. I quickly backed away so they wouldn't get up. They looked so cute together.

    I like that little snore-y sound Gracie was making. When Roni came over it probably looked like it was naptime for the three of you to him. It seems like a horse's head would be awfully heavy to prop up. I am amazed at how they do that.

    She is a beautiful mare, so dainty and delicate looking with her legs tucked up to nap. We know she is a powerhouse when she wants to be and so quick in her movements. She seems to have a lot more good days than when I first started watching. Some might be due to maturity (you would know better than me), but I am sure the majority of her improvement is due to your patient teaching and love and also Roni's influence. He seems to be her "chill pill".

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  4 місяці тому +1

      I was thinking on this and I think it also has to do with her just getting older, it helps that she is surrounded with chill horses too I think. Slowly but surely becoming a bit calmer and level headed.

    The fact that Gracie was able to perceive the fly on her muzzle, in spite of being asleep, shows just how sensitive a horse's skin is. People that 'pat' racehorses hard, after they've won a race, would do well to remember that. It must feel like a slap.

    • @StableHorseTraining

    Just a random question: How many hours of sleep do horses usually get in a 24 hour period?

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  4 місяці тому +1

      It's a common question actually, lying down a horse will generally get up to a couple of hours a day, they doze a lot though standing up, which can be up to maybe 6 hours a day I think.

  • @lucylocket5262
    @lucylocket5262 5 місяців тому +2

    Do your horses lay down to sleep at night? I'm just wondering whether, as prey animals, they feel safe enough to lay down and fall asleep when it's dark.

  • @Pharenir
    @Pharenir 5 місяців тому +2

    Out of curiosity, would you be able to have any of your horses lay their head on your lap while they rest?
    And if so, do you see that as beneficial or detrimental for building trust with the horse?

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  4 місяці тому +2

      I probably could but I imagine it's not comfortable at all as it's not how they are built. Try sleeping with your head half on a hard pillow. Without the support for the neck too, it's uncomfortable. I don't think people should do it overall but I don't see any real harm, a horse can choose to get up. It's probably the safest place to be around a horse too if you're going to sit with them while they lie down as they have to lift their head first. Amazingly you can hold a horse down on the ground too if you can keep their head down (common method to keep a horse down, or cow or sheep etc). Probably super scary for them though....

    • @Pharenir
      @Pharenir 4 місяці тому +1

      @@StableHorseTraining Thank you for your answer.
      I honestly haven't thought about it being comfortable for the horse or not, I just assumed due to their longer neck that it wouldn't be that problematic.
      I'm looking into things to do with a horse apart from exercise to deepen our bond / build trust :)

  • @knuid

    There's a great UA-cam channel from a lady with a horse called Squidward. She calls the lying flat sleeping "carcassing" because the neighbours have called her several times to say they saw her horse laid out and thought she might be dead. It's so great when horses - prey animals - feel so comfortable that they can just carcass in the middle of a field.

    Horses take about an hour nap on their sides. It is dangerous to linger on their sides because of their weight, which could crush their organs. So, that is why they spend more time resting on their sternum or standing. Neat fact: Their ligaments are designed to lock in place so they won’t collapse while standing/sleeping on their feet.

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  3 місяці тому

      For this first item, that's an old wives tale. Plenty of horse sleep for extended times lying down. Nothing dangerous about it at all. They spend more time on their stomach because it's easier to be alert and get up from that position than a full lie down.
      For the second item, it's kinda true. The ligament can hook over the patella (bone) which causes it to "lock" in to place to help the horse just stand there. Interesting stuff for sure.

  • @bonblue4993
    @bonblue4993 5 місяців тому

    What is with her neck? It looks really squished or bunched up somehow. I guess it is her neck automatically keeping her head up while she sleeps.
