Lincoln's First Photographer Ended up in Sacramento

- Jeff visits the Sacramento grave of Nicholas Shepherd, the very first person to take a photograph of Abraham Lincoln.
Mr. Shepherd was a daguerreotypist (early photographer) in Springfield, Illinois and knew Lincoln. He took the portraits and Abe and Mary in 1846. When the Gold Rush happened in California, Shepherd came out west and when the Donner Party was forming, Abe almost joined them!

You learn something new every day, or at least every Sunday with Jeff and the History Hunters ... another fine episode. Best wishes and ..........Cheers
Jeff would you fufill my suggestion by visiting the grave of john philip sousa please and you are the sweetest kindest most special guy on youtube ♥️♥️
Just discovered your channel while searching UA-cam for cemeteries. LOVE your sidekick and the conversations involving her. LOVE the history on the locations plus history of the deceased. Been binch watching for several days as it contagious. I'm sure you have a long list of other historical cemeteries can't wait to see them.
Hello Jeff, Happy Sunday, Thanks for sharing this interesting story on President Lincoln's first photographer. Thanks for taking the time to share the history. Have a wonderful day
What a great suggestion and thank you for giving the guy who suggested it his props.
The most humble of graves host the greatest men.
Once again, you brightened my Sunday. Thanks, Jeff.
Awesome video Jeff. I love to learn anything about President Lincoln. Thanks
He was an amazing man!
Hi Jeff... interesting story on Lincoln....he sounds like he was a very nice man and great President.......loved it.....thanks for your dedication and research ...take care..... Deborah 🇨🇦
You are a Master of Research, Jeff. An old friend & neighbor of Abraham Lincoln who took his first photograph...and is buried in Sacramento. A connection between Abraham Lincoln and the Donner Party. My mind is blown!
Right? So glad he started in Springfield! He would have died in Truckee!
I've seen that image of President Lincoln but didn't know anything about the history of it. Once again learned something new from watching History Hunters.
Wonderful, intelligent, compassionate, fascinating man. The things he accomplished, especially for his time are truly amazing. I have a huge painting of him on my wall, books, a bobble head, t.shirt except the t.shirt doesn’t fit me anymore. 😢 etc etc etc.
What a great leader he was. Thanks Jeff, I can never get enough of Abe.
Thanks to your viewer as well, that was very interesting. ❤️Jodie 🇦🇺
Jeff, you always do such a wonderful job at narrating and presenting your podcasts. Thank you so much and introducing us to Abraham Lincoln’s photographer Nicholas Shepherd, fascinating piece of history.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching! I wouldn’t do this if nobody watched! Bless you!
History I never heard! You always teach us something with your research and videos. No hype and theatrics, just education never taught in school! Thank you so much!
I appreciate that! I’m about as low key as you can get.
Now my day is complete. I fed the dog, fed the cats, fed the chickens and changed their water, went to church, then the grocery store, came home, had lunch, collected the eggs and now I'm chilling with History Hunters. Great cap to a great Sunday.
Wow! Thanks for slipping in a visit to old History Hunters at the end of a busy day! Sounds like you might be living on a farm!
Amen!! To your narrative about the state of this country as a result of our current elected officials. Everyone should recognize and appreciate the contribution and leadership of Abraham Lincoln in preserving and securing freedom for all people, and preserving the Union itself. Imagine the courage it took in his day to say and do and proclaim the things he did. It cost him his life.
Great informative video. Thanks for posting and for speaking up.
You do what you do very well Jeff. I wouldn't want to do it myself.
I appreciate the history lessons and the research you do for every video.
Thank you for always going that extra step! You're to be respected for your outstanding work ethic. Always interesting and unique history.❤ Thank you. God bless you & Sarah. 🙋🙂
I appreciate that! Thanks!
Great episode!
Another good one, Jeff - Thank you!
My pleasure!
Another great and informative program. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication!
Our pleasure! It’s a labor of love and the reward is making so many good friends like you all over the globe!
Those old photos are so cool to see!! Henry P. Volhard served as a military bodyguard to President Lincoln in his later years. I went to school for 12 years with his great great great Grandson. It's actually in my classmate's father's obituary who was Allan "Chuck" Knetter, from ND. A family member worked for Chuck for over 30 some years.
That was very interesting Jeff. I didn't know how close President Lincoln was to joining the Donner party; he could have been known as the cannibal from Hannibal in 1859 when he traveled to Hannibal, Missouri on business. You didn't mention the cemetery that Nicholas H. Shepherd was buried in but I think the cemetery may be the old one located in the Upper Land Park area.
Also, thank you for the information on Mary Lincoln escaping from the mental hospital. These are all things I didn't know about the President and his wife and yes that cemetery certainly needs a lot of work!
Great episode! President Lincoln would also be my choice of historical figures to meet if I could. I had a dream once of him standing at a window at the end of a long wide hallway. It was evening and the hall was dimly lit. President Lincoln was gazing out the window. I walked up to him and said, “They’re here to see you, Mr. President.” And he replied, “Please show them in.” and then my dream ended. It was as if I was transferred back in time and very real. I still remember his voice. Unity only works if all people are willing to be unified! If we as a people are constantly looking at how we are different and not alike, then the divide will exist. United we stand!
In Jesus’ Name!
GREAT PRESIDENT 👍 THANKS JEFF AND SARAH ❤
Thanks, Julio!
Thank you
Jeff, you should be wearing a hat outside when it's hot. When I go outside, I wear a wide-brimmed hat with a flap to protect my neck from getting rays. I stay a lot cooler and wearing a hat is also easier on the eyes as they are mostly in the shade. Enjoyed the episode!!
I am so pleased with your episode on Lincoln. It was a great lesson. Thanx!
Glad to hear it! Thank you!
Keep up the great work Jeff.
Thanks, will do!
Great Episode Jeff 👏. I was at Gettysburg in 1998 where Lincoln appeared for his famous speech. All those people who died there makes you stop and pause a bit.
Definitely! That was one very brutal war where Americans fought each other and sometimes brother against brother!
Another fantastic episode Jeff from History Hunters. As with every episode, we all learn something new from you, thank you!
Our pleasure once again, Wayne! Glad you are there for us!
I agree completely with your comments about Lincoln and didn’t know about his first photographer. Great video.
Thanks!
When I see you have posted. I click right on it. I really appreciate your content. Im in Contra Costa County. Have a good day!!
Hi neighbor! Thanks for watching! Stanislaus County here!
Wow, how interesting this was. Thanks Jeff and Sarah, you come up with the most interesting history.
You are so good for giving us the encouraging words, Lorna! Thank you once again!
This is a beautiful cemetery 👍
I learned some things about Mr Lincoln that I never knew. Thank you!
Happy to help!
Great one as Always, Thank You, can't wait for the next!! -Pal from Northfield, MN
Thanks again! I really do appreciate those words of encouragement! Thank you!
Jeff this is amazing. You do a great job. Always looking for historical information! God Bless 🙏🏻❤️👊👍
I really do appreciate those words of encouragement! Thank you, Terry!
Nice! As a pro photographer I can appreciate this episode! Fascinating place that Sacramento boneyard is. I remember visiting the resting place of Mark Hopkins there. Thanx Jeff!
Glad you enjoyed it, Steve! Sounds like you're familiar with this cemetery! I could probably base a whole channel on this cemetery alone! LOL
This is truly fantastic! Very informative and I never would have known. Awesome
Once again, you’ve outdone yourself with another excellent history lesson. I didn’t catch which cemetery this was. I live in Sacramento.
Glad you enjoyed it! This is the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery.
@@jbenziggy thank you so much!
Great video very informative. This nation is being pulled in many directions by people who firmly believe they know the correct path. We need a leader that can mend our differences and take us forward. Part of the problem is social media which has its merits but also can be used for some to stir the pot of hate.
Just found your channel tonight and love it, and have subscribed. Looking forward to going back and binge watching older videos. I’ve watched 3 so far tonight
Awesome! Thank you! Any relation to Chris Tarr who I mentioned as giving me the tip for this story?
@@jbenziggy off the top of my head, I couldn’t tell you but ya never know. My branch of Tarr’s are from PA and my great great great great grandfather was the a famous oil tycoon involved in the oil industry in the 1700’s and built the famous Tarr Mansion in Meadville, PA
Wow it's amazing you could actually write a presidential candidate and they would write you back and then meet, such a simple time in history. Thanks for sharing safe travels 👍
Right?! I used to write politicians and Ronald Reagan would write handwritten letters back to me! Today you don’t get that attention!
Always extremely interesting. Thank you.
Glad you think so! Thank you!
Loved this episode! I’m a Lincoln “fan” if you will. It looked to me in the photos that I’ve seen of President Lincoln, he appears to have had light colored eyes. Again, very interesting episode Jeff. My best to you and Sarah.
Greenish hazel, were his eyes.
Great stuff again, Jeff
Thanks again! Much appreciated, John!
Awesome history lesson.
Glad you think so! Thanks so much million!
Thank you. Very interesting
“No good task goes unpunished”. So keep sweating for us cause you’re the best at what you do. Now get a glass of cold water and get back out there. 😂😂. Much respect sir.
Yes sir!!!

Jeff a way to make reading old tombstone engravings is to a bright flashlight on the lettering from the side. So lay the flashlight on its side up against the tombstone and it will enhance the engravings with shadows that make it easier to read.
Grace vadell grew up right around the corner from where I live now in Albion ny. There is a plaque where she lived.
Next time i am out I will snap a picture of it and see if I can post it for you on this page
Keep up the great work, great video. You was talking about the heat, In central Oklahoma is 107 degrees 🥵
Oh wow! But we are presently at 105 right now in Modesto!
Great commentary near the end!
Jeff Awesome and very interesting story and you presented it to the you tube community ! I have always liked Lincoln and wondered what would have been of him and our country had he not been shot. I hope that pesky go pro camera starts working properly !! LOL Thanks again for sharing and stay cool
It’s doubtful that camera will ever behave! lol. Thanks for the nice words of praise! Blessings to you!
@@jbenziggy Thanks Jeff
Good video thanks.
Thank you too!
Abe made an unfortunate excursion to the Ford Theater contrary to Mary's wishes, and paid the ultimate price. His legacy as our finest president remains intact, however. Great job, Jeff.
Unfortunately, John Wilkes Booth was determined to kill him one way or the other so I’m not sure that avoiding the theater that night would’ve saved him. Let’s face it the protection back then was pretty lousy. Thanks ever so much for nice comment, Ralph.
Wow, that was a good one.
Thank you!
Thumb's up, Jeff.
Jeff, maybe I missed it, but which cemetery in Sacramento is that? I live in Sacramento and want to visit it.
i remember long ago a tv movie called i believe the 'great mans whiskers' about the girl asking lincoln to grow a beard.
Wow!!!!!
96 Degrees and humid in Virginia too .Jeff .
The historical figure i would like to meet is a close one between Lincoln and Washington... Botg had unique challenges to their leadership.
A very nice Vid. Best wishes from Germany
Thank you very much!
Poor Mary Lincoln. Shame on her son locking her up. She had a lot of loss to be in grief over!
Hi Jeff and Sarah, I got the picture of the historical marker about grace bedell, I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to post it.
I have never posted pictures on UA-cam before.
I don’t believe you can post a photo unless it’s on your channel under the community tab.
@@jbenziggy oh ok I had know idea.
Thank you
Sorry it took so long to get back to you I had to put dogs out.
@@jbenziggy I was hoping to send it to you so you could post as long as I can't.sorry I tried
@@LorieSmith-v8w you can email it to me. j.benziger@sbcglobal.net
Is that the cemetery on Broadway? I didn't hear the location.
Yes!
Great video, things sure have changed, we’ve had some great presidents and now we’re stuck with the absolute worst president in history.
Very interesting,. I would recommend wearing a hat. Cool you a little. Again thanks
80 in the mountains of north Carolina
👍👍👍
👏👏👏👏🤗🤗
Jeff, did you go out there in the 105 degree heat? You are so dedicated! Much of history is found in cemeteries. Thank you for honoring Lincoln’s photographer! Sometimes people such as him are forgotten, even though they were important to history. We tend to forget that great men didn’t get there just on their own. They had a great support team!
A life full of purpose and direction and service, is a life well lived, like yours!!!
That means a lot to me! I try to make each day serve a purpose of good!
@jbenziggy Please check out Caspers Hotdogs restaurant in Hayward. It's closing in mid July. Was opened in 1935. 951 C st. Hayward, CA.
Thx, Belle in AZ
Hi Jeff, Lincoln is my personal hero, also. I, too, believe that God put him in the right place at the right time to keep this country together. This man overcame so many obstacles to achieve this goal: self-education to become a lawyer, loss of numerous loved ones, a bi-polar wife, clinical depression since his childhood etc.... God did give him a gift to get him through this very difficult time.... a sense of humor. As someone who has had clinical depression for over 40 years and knowing what I deal with, it amazes me how this wonderful man set aside his personal problems to fight for the unification of the country. No one else at the time could have ever accomplished what Abraham Lincoln did during those four years.
Thank you from lil one UK me
Always a pleasure to see your videos and here the history of days gone by in the USA 🏴 & 🇺🇸 😊
Lincoln had such expressive eyes
This was very enjoyable, and informative. Don't ever think for one moment, that you're not appreciated, Jeff. We know that you do the research, travel to the locations, and provide us with so much info. Thanks to you, too, Sarah... You're both really valued.
🏡🙏🏻🛣👏🏻🤗
Now I wonder what other subjects were photographed by Mr. Shepherd. I thank you for this and many other times you stir my investigative mind.
Knowledge in ours laps once again Jeff with your videos. My thought on Lincoln not going with the Donner party, was some what equivalent to that of Mr. Milton Hershey (Hershey Candies) canceling his booking on the SS Titanic before it set sail. His cancelled check for $300 can be found in the Hershey Archives Museum. As always Jeff thanks for your hard work and continuing interest in history, an interest that keeps us informed, educated, and entertained.
President Lincoln was a good man. Interesting bit of history you have discovered 😊
My favorite president ❤.
Abraham lincoln was 56 when he was assassinated. Not 57 😊
Thank you. I always look forward to your Sunday stories.
Much appreciated!
Fascinating information. Thank you for braving the heat to bring it to us. The cemetery looks really interesting and peaceful even if time is damaging.
Stop me if you've tried this before but you can take a rubbing with a piece of paper and crayon to read worn grave stones. So nice to learn new things about Lincoln.
Thank you, Jeff for this history about Mr. Shepherd I knew nothing about!
Quick suggestion. Please put your name at the beginning of every show and announce who you are. Your work is as good as ANYTHING on network television, and believe this one adjustment would make the work you do even that much more wonderful. 📺😎
I often will print my name across the screen at the beginning but I figure most people know my first name by now. I'll try to keep that in mind! Thanks for being a fan of the channel!
So awesome Jeff! We’ve been to the Lincoln home, museum and mausoleum in Springfield many times! We’ve been past the Lincoln/Herndon law office as well as the offices occupied by Lincoln and David Davis. We’ve also been to many of the courthouses he visited when he rode the circuit! We’ve also been to Hodgenville, Kentucky where he was born! Thanks for this!!! ♥️ Your biggest Tennessee (formerly California) fans!
P.S. I know the San Joaquin Valley gets hot but we’ve had heat indices of 104-105 here and believe me IT IS NOT THE SAME! My husband keeps saying “you’ve lived where it gets hotter, quit complaining!”😂😂😂
Fractured nation now and a fractured nation then too. Good video, thanks to the watcher who let you know about the grave.
Thanks, Jeff. I like that your episodes send me off on historic exploratory day trips into research. 😊❤
Thank you for this fantastic video. Your videos are always superb. Of all the videos that I have seen yours are always the best. Please continue to make these well researched and professionally presented videos
Thank you very much! I appreciate your comments, Norma!
Thank you Jeff for another great video! I have always loved learning about Abe Lincoln! I wish he could be president today! I can only imagine our forefathers looking down at how our country is today and shaking their heads in disbelief. Those were some amazing pictures of him. Some people just have a talent for photography. Of all the cameras I’ve owned I still haven’t found my talent. 😊
Thank goodness Lincoln passed on the Donner trip. You dig up the most INTERESTING information. ❤
No kidding about Lincoln! He would have perished in all likelihood being thin already!
I very sincerely and absolutely am grateful for what you do for us. I hate that much heat. So Thankyou
Very, very interesting. Great job.
Thank you very much!
That was so great knowledge of history.
Thanks. CHRIS TAR,for steering Jeff to grave, Thanks again for sharing Jeff and Sarah
Glad you enjoyed it! I am glad Chris Tarr let me know about him!
Good work on this one Jeff , you put in as much time digging up information as you do filming and editing ( I would think ) I never heard as much information as what your videos provide THANK YOU FRANK FROM MONTANA.... Question : have you ever heard of " black walstreet in Oklahoma ? Never was though anything about this in school ! I guess they teach what they want you to know. PS I'm white , when I first heard about this I was APALLED ! ! same as today I guess. Is it possible for you to do a video on that ? I ask cause your work is IMPECCABLE
Donald Trump will bring America together again, starting November 5, 2024. Great video Jeff!
so true so true red vs blue blue vs red what is happening to this country,i only hope we as a nation CAN GET IT TOGETHER,AND LOVED THIS LINCOLN POST.👍
Great video jeff you truly are the best
Thanks for saying that! You flatter me! God bless you!
Jeff...off subject, what's 3 of your fav movies and bands? Thanks..love your vids
