  • Even though lions are at the top of the food chain, it doesn’t mean they win every battle. Many hunts are botched and end in failure. Join us, as we look at 15 times Lions messed with the wrong opponent.

    Lion VS Buffalo
When fighting against predators, buffaloes typically engage in mobbing behavior. They have been recorded killing lions and pursuing lions up trees and holding them there for hours after one of their own has been killed by lions. Lion cubs especially, are vulnerable to being trampled and killed. Buffalo herds will move together as one unit, but when a predator attacks them, if panic sets in, they may separate into smaller groups to confuse the predator and make it harder for the animal to target a member of the herd.
Buffaloes use the size of their herd to attack and kill lions.
Some of the lions in this video were so afraid that one of them even climbed a tree, something lions do not do very often, but when death is the other option, climbing is as easy as pie. A few lions try to ambush a cape buffalo in this video, but he manages to stall the felines until some of his friends arrive to join him in a united front.
Once the buffaloes work together, the lions cannot do much. If buffaloes only understood the power they have when they work together, lions could never hunt them down. No matter how powerful lions are, if the buffaloes stick together and charge in unison, there is nothing the lions can do but run. Too bad the buffaloes haven’t entirely understood this concept, yet. You can see an example of what I’m saying in this video, as the buffaloes work together to keep a large pride of lions at bay.
    Monitor Lizard VS Lion
When two young lions approach a monitor lizard, one of the felines is slapped in the face by the reptile, startling the big cat and making him reconsider his little enterprise. Mom and her cubs have a little fun antagonizing a small monitor lizard they spot on a dirt road. The cubs are extremely young, so they pose no danger to the reptile, and it looks like mom is more afraid of the lizard than they are. A monitor lizard ignorantly walks into a pride of 18 lions that are 'unfamiliar' with this animal and are not sure what to do with it. Big cats are instinctively afraid of reptiles and are cautious, but surely, one of the 18 lions will snatch it and run off. Maybe not…
