I am a nursing student and this makes better sense than my tutors do. Its explained in a way that can be easily adopted into my practice. Thank you for your help!!

Textbooks are given a word quota which is why they are so wordy. Try reading the first sentence of each paragraph only and then going over the important stuff.
The same reason why a person say learning diesel mechanic will do a much better job if he has on hands training instead of going to school and getting it from a book. You get the factual information you really need and not 80% of things you will never use. Your brain retains much more this way.
I have read through so many definitions and explanations of Motivational Interviewing and this video gets 5 stars!!! Simple and to the point. Grateful!!!

I've been out of school for some time and just got into a Master's of Counseling program and it seems like the assumption is that most of the students know this material already. I majored in philosophy and only minored in psychology at a school with a HEAVY emphasis on neuropsychology rather than clinical treatment. This is all really helpful and very approachable. I can see where motivational interviewing is a really good skill. Talking to someone instead of at someone has its benefits. When you talking at someone you put them at the defense, when you talking to someone you open that discussion up making it possible for them be less defensive and more open about the decisions of their life.

Wow, I'm sooo thankful for this share! Can you believe I sat in our college library for 3 hours and researched MI in journals, articles, books, encyclopedia, and nothing about the OARS came up which is referred to in this video as BASIC COUNSELING. I'm so irritated because i'm almost done this semester after taking all the PSY classes and the class i'm in now Intro to Counseling, we've never even discussed OARS nor have we done any client/therapist role playing more than twice. This class is pretty much exactly like my PSY classes, i hope when I grad in august onward to my third year i'll actually learn and practice techniques. Thank you so much for posting... now I can finally end my research paper with more confidence and not just the psychological theory of MI but the basic OARS I should've been taught asap! :D
Best Winner Wow! Is your degree specifically in counseling psychology? If so, you might want to bring that issue up with your program chair. I am in a master's in counseling psych program, and we covered those basic counseling skills in our first two quarters of the first year. It should be covered right off the bat.

Thanks Dr. BIll for some great ideas. Tomorrow I will meet, for the first time, with a doctor who signed up with our language institute to learn better English. I'm in Thailand and have been teaching English for awhile now and it had never occurred to me to find out the true motivation, or lack thereof, of students who come to us to learn English. We always complain about the lack of motivation of some learners in spite of the hefty sums they are paying for our services. I'm thinking now more along the lines of doctor and patient and not teacher and student.

I’m going to share this with my NP to potentially help our relationship. Things like procrastination being mistaken for resistance, telling, power, authority, having mutual goals (?), feeling hopeful, change talk and reinforcement are all weak spots. He asserts being an expert in sleep issues as a reason for “telling”, which does cause resistance in me, rather than hearing my concerns. I back off entirely. Ironically this video was introduced to me to help medical students with motivational interviewing.

I like open questions. They open up a conversation. They allow for more self expression. Closed questions feel pointed, as though you are being judged. They can often imply that there is a wrong answer. Sometimes a closed question can force someone to choose between two bad options trapping them into digging a hole for themselves. These sort of questions don't allow for nuance and can feel like an interrogation. All of this can feel uncomfortable.
I've completed 4 courses of MI and I can tell you that this presentation is direct, clear and easy to understand, only if you already have an idea of what MI is. But if you're newly being exposed to MI, this might be a bit confusing for you. Despite all of that though, the truth is none of it matter if the patient or the other person isn't cooperating with you.
Hi Paul, Thanks for the nice words about the video. There are strategies for working with less cooperative clients in MI and in fact MI is useful to use when people are resistant to change. But, you are right that you need the client or other person to at least be willing to meet and talk with you to use MI. If they agree to at least meet, MI can be used to reveal their underlying motivations, whatever they might be. In MI we also respect the client's autonomy, so, if they decide not to change, the MI practitioner would not only accept that but support the fact that they are deciding for themselves, supporting their autonomy.
