Dr. Peter Wadhams was predicting in 2012 the "final collapse of sea ice within 4 years", according to a Guardian newspaper article. How come and that did not happen ?
July 6 2021 update: arctic sea ice is on pace for a top 3 finish in both volume and area. Has potential to break both records but too soon to tell. For area, top 3 years 2012, 2020 and likely 2021. For volume, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Once the ice goes, its game over.
Predictions goes about from 2023 to 2070 for so called blue ocean effect (1 million km2 of ice still left) and bit later almost completely ice free ocean (some ice may still be found near islands). Heat extent of arctic ocean is large enough to melt all ice during summer if some storm is powerful enough to mix ice with deeper ocean. So we may or may not have time, but yet still we must try to prevent most harmful effects if we can. There is also some weather events that has been occurring recent decade or so and that have prevented record (area) melts in the late melting season. Thank you so much for this video. Concerning the question of why the rate of warming is higher at the poles than at lower latitudes, might the fact that the atmosphere is considerably thinner at the poles not have something to do with it (i.e. less energy required to heat a relatively smaller mass of air)? Furthermore, might the fact that the atmosphere is thinner not result, somehow, in a a relatively higher concentration or proportion of greenhouse gases? Additional factors that might explain a difference in warming rates between latitudes as well as between the northern and southern hemispheres: 1) The continental land masses are concentrated in the northern hemisphere and, as Dr. Wadhams pointed out, a large proportion of the existing sea areas in the Arctic consist of relatively shallow water (continental shelves). The sea/ocean is therefore less capable of acting as a heat sink in the Arctic than at lower latitudes, as well as being less efficient as a heat sink in the northern hemisphere than in the southern hemisphere; 2) Industrial activity and human population (and therefore CO2 generation) are also concentrated in the northern hemisphere); 3) Possibly, methane-rich hydrates are also concentrated in the northern hemisphere relative to the southern hemisphere (shallow seas as well as Siberian tundra, etc.)...

It's pretty sad to realize that hardly anyone has heard of huge (1km diameter and smaller ones) methane plumes that are rising from seabed near Siberia. Not by few, but by thousands. And hearing that these have gone worse with flaking seabed means we are rapidly losing our control of climate warming. Single release of 50Gt of methane is bad, but if constant release continues for next 100 years with yearly increases with possibility of enormous single bursts, it mean even harder times for all.

Methane oxidizes to carbon dioxide, which is good for the plants. If you are against CO2 you are not green! Plants came into existence when atmospheric CO2 was 7,000 ppm. Earth didn't overheat then, it won't overheat now.

I think it's important to shout out the message: "REMOVE CO2 from the atmosphere--We need to work on that!" Because I think most EVERYONE realises that no government has the wherewithal to truly effect a REDUCTION in emissions--and that causes a sort of psychotic hopelessness. "Nothing's going to happen anyway, I'm overwhelmed, and I don't want to think about this anymore, we're doomed. Period." But, human beings--along with being really stupid--can also come forward with marvelous innovations. I do FIRMLY believe, we do have the capacity for the sort of innovation necessary to attack this problem from the perspective of REMOVING CO2 from the atmosphere. Working on reducing emissions is just simply going to take time. We can BUY ourselves that time by quickly inventing ways to remove what is already there--and on into the future as well.
At 38:00, methyl hydrates are examined. Dr. Wadhams says that the seafloor is permafrost. This is misleading. The seafloor is mud or rock and there is permafrost at various depths below that. Here is a quote: The permafrost modeling indicates, however, that a significant change in the permafrost depth lags behind the imposed changes in surface temperature, and after 25 years of summer seafloor warming (as observed from 1985 to 2009), the upper boundary of permafrost deepens only by ∼1 m. Thus, the observed increase in temperature does not lead to a destabilization of methane‐bearing subsea permafrost or to an increase in methane emission. The CH4 supersaturation, recently reported from the eastern Siberian shelf, is believed to be the result of the degradation of subsea permafrost that is due to the long‐lasting warming initiated by permafrost submergence about 8000 years ago rather than from those triggered by recent Arctic climate changes. A significant degradation of subsea permafrost is expected to be detectable at the beginning of the next millennium. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2011JC007218 Note the next millennium part. That would be 3000 AD
Further to my previous comment concerning the quicker rate of warming in the Arctic than at lower latitudes (see below), I think it would be great if you could address this issue in some future programme, including a discussion of various specific factors such as higher rate of ozone depletion at higher latitudes, net balance effect of a thinner atmosphere in the presence or absence of cloud cover, effect of greater atmospheric moisture content at higher latitudes (Greenland) in recent years, etc. Thank you again.
It seems like we find ourselves at the end of our "civilization" party. Here we are in kitchen by the fridge, which is broken, and warming up the last few beers. Cheers 🍻

Start funding harvard scientist Ye Tau s MEERS project. We don't have any time to wait. The blue ocean event is expected next September. Too many feed back loops have been triggered
There's a lot of predictions out there, it's definitely going to happen in the next 5-10 years, but there is no way to predict an exact date. Just like the methane clathrates, it could happen any summer/time, but we won't know until it does.
@@watchalong7404 Yes Of course we don't know exactly when one of the many self re inforcing feedback loops triggers the exponential factor or destroys the jet stream.....oh no, wait, isn't that already happening ? Lol Plants and animals cannot adapt to the extremely accelerated rate of change . Habitat for life on earth is being threatened and from what the peer reviewed papers say it's not possible to stop it .
@-GinPi Gamma Well, I dont know physics but it sounds like you do. That's too bad the meers project won't help. If that's the case then we are truly done. The latest oceanographers prediction is a blue ocean event in 2022 and collapse of the jet stream by 23. Dead zones in the north Atlantic are already common. Amazing how destructive one primate can be.
@-GinΠΓ Τάο yes you most definitely can reflect solar radiation and heat back out of the atmosphere. If that weren't the case loss of albedo (the ability to do just that) from loss of sea ice wouldn't be a major factor in the warming of The Arctic and the planet as a whole. And Peter Wadhams IS a physicist ...
The spheres sound a lot like "Cabosil", which I used to thicken epoxy with. Is that what you used?? Pretty cheap by the big bags. I think I paid $105 for a 10 pound bag, which was bigger than a 90# bag of cement in volume.
It's not that the planet will suffer if the climate warms and all of the polar ice melts. It's life as we know it that will face extinction. Humans can't seem to control their burgeoning populations or live a simpler lifestyle. They want to keep their cake and eat it. In nature, there is no compromise. Past extinctions due to climate changes have wiped out large percentages of living things, but new forms of life evolved over time. Will be the same for the anthropocene.
Glass or Ballotini beads are already used for measuring how much food animal species have eaten. They are particularly used in areas like aquaculture research. Glass beads are also used for sandblasting so it would be preferrable aerated beads sink so as not to damage turbine blades on hydro dams.
Why not starting efforts stopping ice blackening particles emission? Coal industry, diesel combustion, and wildfires. Why is it allowed to keep on burning crops as an ancestrial agriculture method? Why nobody talk about it? We all hear about Amazonia wildfires, even Siberia ones, but what about fires in central Africa?. I would consider this kind of steps to avoid the impacts we do before stepping onto geoengineering because we don´t know what kind of secondary effects they would have. At last I find Albedo taking relevance in a discussion. If we would be able to dramatically cut down fires we will be cutting down CO2 emissions, CO, SO2, black carbon, keeping the natural CO2 sequestering "machines" and avoiding such a huge amount of sourface becoming black/dark. Not to mention how bad it is for the soil structure, humidity...
The governments around the world should be given concrete facts by the scientific community. If we are loosing Arctic Sea Ice within a decade or two, how many years will the Greenland Ice Sheet last after getting an ice-free Arctic in 2030s? Should we expect 5 meters sea level rise as early as 2050s? I am living in the Delta Area of a great river called Indus, and millions of people along with me are within 1 meter reach of the Arabian Sea. Should we start to evacuate?
Regrow multi year ice? Great idea that would possibly work when scaled up. The problem is you will have a ton of resistance from China, Russia, and many other countries that benefit from the shipping they plan for the Arctic Sea. It's going to fall to the same thing that all environmental ideas do, the money being made by the few that benefit from the status quo.
starting to talk openly about geoengineering, using silica glass beads to reflect sunlight back out into space in places where the ice is thinning/gone.......... a sign of desperation AND insanity..... really disturbing to listen to the language she uses where she tries to normalise this and allay concerns (and i speak as a marketing and PR consultant specialising in the use of language to persuade people to buy into agenda/initiatives/products etc...)

Is the answer not to issue greenhouse gasses as a correcive to the ice age that is othwise going to overwhelme us????? SHould these gassses not be conserved and emitted in a controlled way to correct the cooling trend? if that is possible at all???

The bulk of proposed "solutions" do not survive close, detailed and numerical scrutiny. Check out what prof. Timothy Garrett has to say about climate change and our energy use. WASF.
the reflection of sunlight proposed by this Stanford Team wont do anything to help cut existing GHGs and increasing emissions of GHGs in the atmosphere, so I do not see how the Stanford Team can claim that it will "reverse the heating". At most it would reduce by reflection, increasing albedo, by a small percentage but meanwhile orders of magnitude of heating are ongoing and increasing worldwide. Re the arctic rate of heating, 3-4x faster than global avg rates, I would rec Peter W. investigate arctic atmospheric causes such as northerly wind currents [could they effectively import warmer air and then contain there at a higher rate that avg?] and solar radiation [could it be more direct and thus more energy is being added to the Arctic than avg / southerly areas? ].
Apparently, the near-term extinction of most life forms on earth is the greatest threat. Therefore, world cooperation is mandatory if a solution to humankind's dire predicament is to be solved.
so when are you going to ask the PUBLIC --- all the citizens of the world --- whether or not we want to go ahead with these projects? these discussions and decisions should be made by the global community, at a grassroots level.... not happening behind what is, in effect, closed doors

Until Governments get involved, few will acknowledge the seriousness of the BOE. Sadly, life has become extremely precarious.
HBO did an Arctic climate change movie/documentry? wow kudos to that producer at HBO.
A significant degradation of subsea permafrost is expected to be detectable at the beginning of the next millennium. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2011JC007218
Note the next millennium part.
Cheers 🍻
I think it would be more advantageous to find ways to make the best of a warmer earth. Because there's no turning it around. Because as you showed nothing we,ve done has made a difference, and nothing can stop it now

Of course we don't know exactly when one of the many self re inforcing feedback loops triggers the exponential factor or destroys the jet stream.....oh no, wait, isn't that already happening ? Lol
Plants and animals cannot adapt to the extremely accelerated rate of change .
Habitat for life on earth is being threatened and from what the peer reviewed papers say it's not possible to stop it .
@-GinPi Gamma
Well, I dont know physics but it sounds like you do.
Yes Marine Biologists can have a huge impact; cultivate plankton, kelp&bio-engineer methane digesters.

There's more Arctic sea ice now than there was in 1921. That must mean ice forms when the weather is hot?
the reflection of sunlight proposed by this Stanford Team wont do anything to help cut existing GHGs and increasing emissions of GHGs in the atmosphere, so I do not see how the Stanford Team can claim that it will "reverse the heating". ].

Please, rethink to reduce melting ice. Melting ice is cooling the ocean with 334 KJ/kg If you stop melting ice the world will heat up. We need to increase the regrowth of ice in the winter, not prevent melting in summer.
