As an aside, I did not learn from your stingnato piece. Ran into a very unhappy queenless hive with only jacket and pants. Bees found an opening at my shoe tops and ran all the way up my legs.Two days later and I’m still in recovery mode. While I laughed hysterically at your experience, I ain’t laughing now.
😂 that will teach you. I seriously have to get a new jacket. I hate that thing. My full suit I get stung on the chin because the stupid veil is too close lol. I’ve never had such mean bees this far into the flow.
That was pretty successful. Glad the decided to make the queen cells. I'm going to try that when I can. I was going to on my #2 colony, but they pleasantly surprised/gifted me with one naturally. They definitely are a wonder! BTW.. I sit and watch the girls work just like you do. Very peaceful.

Hi WanderingStar. Yeah, it works pretty good. I've done it a lot this spring. I've had four or five hives not requeen successfully. Not making it back from the mating flights I guess. I had one queen never leave and started laying drones. I booted her out into a Nuc that was failing to see if it was indeed her shooting blanks. Thanks for watching.
I've yet to try notching and I am weary of emergency cells, but I must say, that lower right cell really looked good. Notching paid off on that one.
Hi Mike. Yeah, there were a couple on there that were nice sized. In hindsight, I probably should have taken out that srawny one. My luck that one will be the first out and kill the rest. lol Take care.

The scrawny one size "says" that the egg selected was older & generally will never be a good queen, also will emerge first & kill all others

Hey Brian. Yeah it works pretty good. Be sure you do it on the youngest eggs you can find. They make better queens. You’re making it through all the old videos pretty fast. 👍👍. Take care.
Amazing how elusive those queens can be. 17 hives here and my strongest hive (Double deep and two full supers) is from a dead tree cutout last summer. Very strong, mild temper and zero swarm tendencies this year. I selected her for my donor queen for my grafting. Only downside is her ability to hide....I FINALLY laid eyes on her about 4 weeks ago. Happiest queen marking I've ever done. Haven't seen her since but she's still laying up a storm.

Darren, you did great, you read it as queenless, notched the frame of eggs and so far so good! I hope she emerges and gets mated without any issues. I had just found one queenless a few weeks ago and I paid $50 for a new queen and when I received her she was very very small. I really don’t think she was mated. Needless to say I won’t be buying anymore from them. I did it because I didn’t want to miss the flow with that hive. Because of your video the next time I will definitely try the OTS. Thanks!
Yeah, sometimes I wonder what they are selling. I got some dinky ones from a place in Texas and I don't use them any more. I haven't bought a queen in 4 years now I think. Yeah, keep the population up for the honey production. Otherwise they won't do anything. Take care Don.
Had watched your video on the notching and then found I had a queenless hive. So I added a frame of brood and eggs and notched the eggs... they are drawing beautiful queen cells from those notches and have them almost capped. They left other areas with eggs completely alone!

Hi Melony. Yeah, they pulled some down. Now for phase II for them to mate and make it back in one piece. I've not had such good luck this year with that. Good Job. When you marked the queen I was thinking about my experience today. Got a nuc 10 days ago with an unmarked queen. So today I inspected the hive to see how they are doing. 2nd frame and there was the queen so I got my one handed queen catcher and got her inside. Marked her blue and let her sit to dry. 3-4 minutes later I go to put the queen back in and she is gone. Checked on the ground and all around and no queen. After kicking myself for a bit I went back to check again for the missing queen and found her balled up from an adjacent hive. Next time I will leave the queen catcher on her hive. So after I realized the queen had left I notched several times and hope they draw them down like yours did. Live and learn I guess. Love your

@@JeromeBeeFarm I guess she was a small queen. It was a terrible nuc to start with - wasted $150. I did put in a couple of notches so we will see if I get lucky. I may steal a sealed swarm cell from a different hive and install like you did.
I might have three to sell if they get mated and start laying.

i'am sore! I did a complete brake job on my pickup rollers, pads, and calipers, Plus change the brake fluid too! All with out help! in 3 hours> save about 2k doing it myself, parts was 500 bucks> PLUS I KNOW ITS DONE RITE! I test drove it to ~ PERFECT LIKE NEW! its got all new parts! i did have to buy a 1 person bleeder kit! for 10 bucks he hee i didn't have time to make one. bottle hoses ect for one. On a 2000 Sliverado 1500 3 door> My dads truck I LOVE THAT THING > it just turn 100k miles> Guess i'll keep it until i die. My bees are set on AUTOMATIC> All i got to watch out for is FIRE ANTS ~Thanks for the video
Ditto here on that auto pilot bees and dang fire ants! We are in N Florida and we had the mildest winter I can ever remember so a lot of stuff didn’t get knocked back...like the bad bugs..yellow flies are horrific!! And the fire ants are really bad too thus year!
My dad has a 1970 Chevrolet CST 1/2 ton. It's slightly restored and all original. He's the second owner. He bought from a guy down the street when it was one year old.
I tried this OTS method this spring on 2 hives with success, i pulled the queens off 2 strong hives and started nuc's with them, I then notched a couple frames in both queenless hives and fed them sugar-surp also, i ended the spring doubling my hives..........

Hi Jerome, I have a one handed queen marking tool but I’m not great at getting the queen to go into it. Have your got a tip on how to use the tool? Do you hold it vertical over her or sideways so she can walk in? Shayne👩🏼💫
Hi Shayne. I try to just above eye level with the frame and come down with it about 30 deg in front of her to stop her moving and then move it down around her softly. Then I look into the tube to see where she's at, just in case it's sitting on her, and when I see her, I don't move the slider til I see it's not going to damage her, then close it up. Good luck.
Yep, the bees tend to figure it out. You ever worry about the virgin swarms? I left a few extra in a couple this spring and had 4 virgin swarms because of it. The goofy weather up here has made it really hard for these girls to get mated. Probably going to have to start thinking about combining hives back together.
Yeah, I've had a few virgin swarms. Last year's huge swarm was a virgin swarm, but I'm not so sure it came from my yard. I'm having a worse than normal success on these requeening and mating flights. I agree, it must be the weather. I did my fourth one tonight on hive #14. I used a frame from this #12 hive in this video. Thanks for watching.
With the open queen cell, I consider that it will be the best, as it will be fed a lot more Royal Jelly - being an egg when the frame was placed

Yes, you could do that. The donor frame had quite a bit of brood on it. I’ll see how it goes for awhile.
I thought you were trying to catch her with heavy gloves on and I shuddered. Then I saw you were using my favorite tool. My clumsy meat hooks have damaged a few queens and that was a few too many.
I’d bare hand her, but the other bees are attacking me. lol. My bees are exceptionally pissy this year too for some reason. I can’t walk within 100’ of my hives if I’m upwind from them. They smell me and come after me. lol. I’m about to get tired of it.

Got Mels book and read it over the winter. Did the artificial split on 4 of my hives. At 7 days (per Mels recommendation) I went back in and inspected. All had QCs. Tore down all but 2, as he recommends. When back in on day 28 and none had gotten mated and returned. I recombined the hive splits Will repeat attempt in July since he used to recommend to pinch all queens in July and notch frames but he no longer recommends that. So in July I’ll split again and notch.
I’ve done a variation of that with a double screen board. I’ve heard a lot of folks having issues with queens not making it back. I’ve had quite a few myself. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hi Jay. Funny you ask. It was on my follow up list and I checked it a couple days ago and it failed to requeen. All the swarm cells were open and I also found a set of three supercedure cells that had emerged, so not sure what happened. I did the OTS method on it at the same time. I think I pulled a frame from #2. That was the fourth hive I think that failed requeening. Not sure what's going on. May be the weather.
@@JeromeBeeFarm I had same problem last year called Joe May to buy queens he said he was having same problem had to get Queens from Johnny Thompson in Mississippi.
I hope this one takes. That makes three now with OTS queen cells. My #26 hasn’t requeened either. It had at least six swarm cells left in it. I saw one left that was uncapped prior, so I’ll give it a few more days. It was covered with bees like it had a queen in it.

I am very impressed with OTS. I like the idea we chose the one day old larva or egg. I was surprised you allowed any of the queen cells to live. The upper middle and upper left cells were chosen by the bees. The lower right cell was either a one day one egg or older larva. You state in video, that the larva was to old to make a good queen. We know a one day old larva makes the best queens. Two day old larva make below average queens. Three day old lava makes inferior queens. Three and half day old larva always makes worker bees. I just watched a video by John Schwartz and he gives you credit for his knowledge of OTS. You choose day old eggs and in his video he choose day old larva. Does it make a difference. I like the day old eggs because we know on day one, the larva receives royal jelly. The reason two and three day old larva are inferior is because they don't receive royal jelly from day one. If we allow the bees to chose larva, we have an 66% of inferior queens and we don't find that fact for weeks and months going into the Winter. This information has been known for years by queen breeders.
Hi there Rinahugo. Thanks for the insightful comment. This hive produced a nice virgin queen, but didn't return from mating flight. That was a big problem for me last year. I'm hoping 2021 isn't so difficult. I'll likely order around 6 queens in the spring to get a jump start on getting my strength back closer to 30 hives. Thanks for stopping in.
I just became one of your club members-I purchased your book. I am thinking of buying one and donating it to my bee club here in St. Louis, MO. It is said that bees will kill a inferior queen if they don't like her mating after returning. Many reasons queens don't return.

Yes you are correct Honey Hollow. It's one of my strongest this season and I split it three ways I believe. They were kinda mean after that. lol They are calming down some now though. THanks for watching.

Make some splits from that first 2020 queen! Calm, laying up a storm, storing honey/nectar in the corners. Or put on a queen excluder and notch some frames with eggs up above then pull them when the cells are capped for a split. Then take a frame of that capped brood (minus the bees) and give it to the notched egg hive... boosts the population and assure some young bees coming on once the queen is mated and laying. Feed 'em syrup so they don't have to compete. That's my 2 cents as usual! LOL
Hi Nancy. That's a good idea. In-fact, I did a notch method with one of her frames into #14 tonight. It failed to requeen. That's the fourth hive I think that has failed to requeen with the swarm cells. I need to get me more internal feeder setups for just that. Appreciate your 2 cents. Take care.
@@JeromeBeeFarm Checked on my notches today and have two frames with capped cells. Cut one out for a queenless hives (I run all wax and wire foundation), left one frame with several in the hive and took the other frame and made a mating nuc - plan on cutting out another cell tomorrow since I know there is another hive in need of a cell where a virgin didn't return So I've got three possibility and hope that at least two will take and maybe I'll have a queen or two to sell. I'm also going to start some grafting from my favorite queens and set them up in a cell builder/finisher. Will be another new experience on a larger scale. I've got your skunk problem here this past week or so. Have three traps set but so far no captures. Hives are 18-20 inches up off the ground so you'd think they'd be safer. Doing a real number of the bee populations in the hives.
Wow, that's awesome. Yeah, that's an advantage of the wax foundation. I've never tried to get one of these off of plastic. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work. I hate those darn skunks. After I took down my fence, I found plugs all up and down that row #5-15. I was so ticked. Things had greened up and I figured they had moved on. I'll leave it up longer next year.

bud I only have one size equipment deeps and they work well
I loved having the same equipment throughout. Unfortunately I no longer wear a young man's clothes. I can get by with one deep super but at almost 60, my arm strength won't let me handle that weight up high and I'm too proud to work off a step ladder LOL.
Yeah, those deeps can get over 90 lbs. More than I want to lift. I only put them on to bank some deep honey frames until harvest. I'll open up hone bound hives and put in them a deep on another hive to store. I've seen folks use all mediums and that doesn't work so well in the brood chamber seems like to me. @@DStewart2022 Hi David, I am in my 70s and I bee keep one frame at a time nowadays, I have a cart with a plastic tote that takes 9 frames at a time, and I just switch out old for new, I run two boxes through winter then early spring I add a new box of starter strips and foundation to the bottom of the stack, I then shake out the frames in the top box before adding an excluder before putting it back, this way I rotate all frames and I know that there are no frames older than two years, I dont have wax moth issues and never have disease issues, my belief being that old comb encourages disease.
