You describe perfectly how difficult it is to flat hunt in London for rentals. High prices for unsatisfactory apartments. Like you i like unfurnished places and it seems close to impossible.
I agree with the comments Monica, your current place is so much nicer than any other ones you showed today. If I was choosing I would have gone with the last one even tho it was super small but it was the most modern so I don't know, do you want modern and small or big and out dated ? x
haha aww I know everyone loves my current place but I guess I'm very use to these modern buildings that I was looking for something more quaint and traditional 😅 Also I don't think I could have stayed at my current place even if I wanted, the rent was going up 15% 😬
Used to live in LCI too but the neighbourhood was defo not the best! Mad how I didn’t see flats in that price range, usually it’s all 1600+ for studios/one bed in NW 😳
I understand most of the sentiments you described but I do think that your standards for the price range you were looking for were quite high. I would attribute what you found down to luck and vigor. Anyone looking in London should know how competitive places are and how quickly places go so the key thing when looking for rentals here is to build some sort of rapport with agents because they will send you stuff off market a lot of the time...
Wow, prices where much better 9 month ago, I have just rented a tiny little studio in Paddington for 1200 pcm. Would be great if you could mention reliable agencies that you have worked with. I know you tend to use private landlords. Thanks
Thanks Monica. I will be relocated from Frankfurt to London on January and start already looking the flats on rightmove. Most of the one bedroom flat and studios I found on rightmove are over 1500 pcm (or almost 1800) on South London, so I am surprised that the flats you show here are all around 1400 and in good locations. I will have a look on west London :) One question, can we schedule the flat viewing on Saturday? I don't know how much time I will have after work to view these places.
Yes they do! But it varies place to place depending on the agent and tenant availability. For finding listings under 1500, I set my limit to my budget and everyday I would refresh it like 2-3 times a day so that I see all the listings and only those within that price range. I actually didn't expect to get a 1 bed but it came up in my budget!
also on average west London is more expensive than south so just be aware that the prices you are seeing may be adjusted to your international IP address to get more money out of you.
Oh where I talk about why I’m moving is in the next vlog coming out soon! But it’s mainly because the neighbourhood around this building isn’t great and also the rent would be going up since I rented it when it cheaper during lockdown! So didn’t feel like it was worth it anymore 😅
where i live the biggest problem is theres like 5 apts month avalible to rent in a city of 800k ppl, if you are foreigner forget about competing with locals
If you want to live in nottinghill you have to compromise a lot - depends if location is really that important to you - best of luck with your new home... if you did move west, welcome welcome - i've been here for 8 years :)
Yes true. I was lucky and found somewhere with a new landlord who was fairly naive. Managed to get a two bed in central Notting hill with beautiful communal gardens and tennis courts -within budget. A dream
Monica, how did you goabout your long term visas now with the points based immigration system😢 ik that with the youth mobility visa you just need a lot of money lol but what if you intend to stay permanently😢
Beautiful and a nice vid. But let’s be realistic ur current rent and what ya looking for are actually not affordable, if you look into the average to a bit higher salaries in London. I don’t like to share as well.. I guess London needs lots of money haha
As a Canadian considering the move for teaching starting in late August- would you recommend going over to London and getting an Airbnb for a while to tour apartments? I’d rather have the flat set up prior to flying there, but I’m SO nervous to get scammed. I have people in my teaching agency that can go and look at the flats, but I’m still unsure of this. Also, how do you get a damage deposit put down from overseas? Thank you for your help!!
Definitely get an air bnb first. We came over from Vancouver and it was so stressful to try to get a flat. You have to have your NIN set up, a British bank account proof of work, VERY large deposits (if you’re new to the country). To get in to our first flat out deposit was CAD$8000! Because we had none of the above: many places want six months or one year rent in advance. We Air Bnb’ed for about 4 months and then flat shared whilst we waited for all of our paperwork (things do NOT move quickly in England! And are very old fashioned!!!!) and then we finally got our own flat. We then moved 1.5 hours out of London as we can have a huge 5 bedroom beautiful house here by the sea and just commute in.
So although I didn’t do this, I would say it is safer to get an Airbnb first and view when your here. But if you have help from people you know here I would say it’s safe to do so if they’re with a reputable agency. Like Foxton, keatons etc… I’m sure your teaching agency staff should know if it’s a trustworthy agency. It would be really risky with a private landlords. And I did an international bank transfer, just be aware it takes a few days to transfer over. :)
@@MonicaXGuan thank you! Your channel is honestly such a god send :) yes my teaching agency has plenty of current Canadians living in London that would be happy to tour places for me and FaceTime so I’m sure that option would be safe.

Hello Monica! I have a question 🥺, how long does it normally take to move into a flat? I mean, if I have seen a flat that is available inmediatly and I want to move as soon as possible how long does it normally take? How much do I have to wait to move to the flat after I send the paperwork? Hope you see this! 😁😁 Thank you very much!
Hmm I seen it happen as fast as the next day! Usually just depends on their referencing system. How fast they check your documents, how fast the landlord responds and how fast you send the deposit. :p
Thank you so much for your answer! My wife and I are moving on August to London, of course we will start looking around late June, but I wanted to know how fast the approbation comes once we send the paperwork. Thank you very much once again!
Hi Monica! I’m thinking of moving to London from the U.S. for school - with my german shepherd! Do you know if places that allow dogs/large dogs common? Were any of the places you looked at pet friendly?
I wasn't specifically looking for pet friendly but actually at Flat 2 and 3 I saw dog beds. I would say finding listing for dog friendly is a bit tougher but for older buildings, owners tend to not care as much vs newer building.
I’m pretty sure there was actually a new law recently stating owners had to give good reason for rejecting a pet, as opposed to being able to reject them outright. I’d have a look into it because I don’t 100% remember!
