  • Joel Embiid is averaging 2.5 blocks in 25 minutes of play per game. That’s 3.5 blocks a game per 36 minutes. In only 31 games, Jo has blocked 76 shots. Compare that to the players with similar tallies, and it paints a pretty clear picture: Karl-Anthony Towns, the reigning Rookie of the Year, has 78 blocks through 51 games. Marc Gasol, the one-time Defensive Player of the Year, has notched 74 blocks through 50 games. Draymond Green, the two-time DPOY runner-up, has 71 blocks in 48 games. The sky is the limit for Joel once he clears the minutes (and games) restriction, but in the meantime, he has still delivered for the once floundering Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers are now 18-32, that is significantly better than last year’s 10 win season, and a marked improvement from the 2014-15 campaign, where they tallied 18 wins, but needed 72 games to get there. Embiid has played in 13 of Philly’s 18 wins.
In the games since his absence, Philly has managed to pull their win tally up to 21 games by the all-star break. This is their winningest year since 2012-13.
To put in context what The Process has meant to his team, Philly’s defensive rating with Joel on the floor is at 99.1, individually better than Draymond Green, Rudy Gobert, Kevin Durant, Paul Millsap and Anthony Davis. Without JoJo, the Sixers drop all the way to 109.3. The Spurs, Warriors, and Jazz all rank at the top of team defensive rating at 101.3, 101.4, and 101.5 respectively, while Phoenix is 28th in the league at 109.3 (the Lakers and Nuggets are dead-last at 110.3 and 110.6). At this point, I guess if you’re not getting what I’m trying to say, it’s pretty simple: Philly is good with Embiid, and REALLY REALLY NOT GOOD without him.
This video is all about Embiid’s dazzling defense in denying EVERYTHING at the rim, but also his capacity to dart around screens and dance with perimeter players on switches. He doesn’t get beat a whole lot off the bounce because of his ability to move his feet, but when he does, he has the length and strength to block shots anywhere around the paint. He’s got great instincts, and his help side defense has saved the game on more than one occasion. So, trust the process, and enjoy this video.
Also, I’m well-aware that the last two clips are goaltends, but one wasn’t called in the game, so technically, it stands as a block. Regardless, just think of the final two clips as bonus footage.
