- Laurena songs on iTunes: dft.ba/permafrost
In which John defies the so-called Wadsworth Constant, which maintains that the first 30% of all UA-cam videos can safely be skipped, by giving you Halloween pumpkin tips, some quotes from James Joyce's Ulysses, The Fault in Our Stars, his signature, and so on.
My new novel, The Fault in Our Stars, comes out on January 10, 2012. I'm signing the entire first printing. You can preorder your signed copy at your local bookstore dft.ba/-tfiosindie, Barnes and Noble dft.ba/-tfiosbn, or Amazon dft.ba/-tfios
The song is "Fireflies of Montreal" by Laurena Segura. She's an outlandishly talented nerdfighter. Check her out: / lullation13

there's something really soothing about watching john green sign his name while listening to "the Fireflies of Montreal"
Enjoyed the tutorial on how to forge your signature :P
TheFlyinSquid I was thinking the same thing
Watching someone write their signature over and over is strangely hypnotizing, especially to that song.
this video has reaffirmed my confidence in my extremely simple signature. I have no talent and thus will never give autographs, but if I ever did have to give 150,000 autographs my two-swoops-and-a-shwizoop would be pretty easy to sign repeatedly.
the first 30% of this video is arguably skippable, since the rest of the video is arguably unrelated...
I was gonna write a personal story here about someone I lost, but I don't know, I think I'm halfway between mourning and moving on and I don't want to fall back on that. But thanks John for always being inspiring.
That was peaceful and simply relaxing. Just watching John's hand flowing across a slip of paper as that sweet song swept all today's anxieties from inside of me. I think I can finally sleep tonight. Thank you John and the nerdfighter with a beautiful voice.
Revisiting the days when I was a Nerdfighter. I remember ordering one of these books, refinding out about lullation13 about, reading The Catcher in the Rye with John's book club and loving this community, good times.
so here i am, catching up on old vlogbros videos, and in the same night i catch reference to an old they might be giants song and a homestar runner reference. you have no idea how close i am to fanboy status right now.
The song and signing is very soothing, it's nice...
1:21 to start the video
EJSjjh I calculated that 1 minute 16.8 seconds was the wadsworth constant applied. All of the content is skipped with it.
Philip Stout Actually if you hit the 3 it takes you to the 30% mark of the video. So you were close.
Technically since the majority of this video was the song playing in the background the Wadsworth Constant stays in effect. All the facts you've given was unrelated to the video. So your video technically doesn't start until 30% in.
+Ricky Williams One could also argue this only begins a new effect of the "Reverse-Wadsworth" where only the first 30% is useful and the rest is filler.
+Anthean of Gaming I was thinking the exact same thing, except I would call it the something like "Inverse Wadsworth Constant". "Inverse" is more fitting for the "scientific law" vibe the original term has.
SlothsAllTheWay Good point. SCIENCE!
It's funny cause the real part of the video, the one that actually takes majority starts at about 30% in...
This is so calming

1:16-3:32, I cried.
John, your dedication to not only your readers but also to your watchers makes me so happy. I greatly admire you for that.
I AM OBSESSED WITH HER SONGS. I'm so happy they're available.
HE'S USING A GREEN SHARPIE. WHY, WHYYYY, DID I JUST REALIZE THE PUN IN THIS?
No he mentioned it during what I would describe as a Sharpie Paradox
It's always a green pen day
oh gosh, i live in a small town in ohio called wadsworth and i was like AHH WHAT'S HAPPENING but then i realized it was something different, though i'm still okay with this.
how come this comment is 9 years old but has such a.. 2020 feel to it??
The signing part of this video is so calming. I could watch this bit forever.
Watching you sign and listening to Laurena is strangely hypnotic and soothing.
my copy of trios has a green signature inside and i always wonder if he signed it in this video..
Same here!
Alexa Migton well all signatures are slightly different so you could analyze each freeze frame and if you see a match a match it is, if not then it was signed off-camera
Actually, the point of the video was made in the last 70%. The first 30% is useless.
o fuk
Thank you for putting Laurena's music in your video, John. I hadn't heard her before, and am now in love with her music.
I am so excited for TFiOS. Thank you for signing them all.
How many times did he say "Maybe I'll just leave it in" but edited it before he said it?
"Don't tell me pumpkin juice doesn't exist, muggles!" I swear to god right at that momebt my heart stopped for a while because ASDFGHJKL i couldn't ask for a better favorite author :")
Omg! that last part was almost like hypnotism with watching his hand sign over and over again while the song was playing in the background.
This song is absolutly beautiful, thanks Laurena.
While listening to the background song of this video, I heard a kind of popping in the background, and the weird thing about that is, for some reason, the pops seemed to create some kind of feeling in the back of my throat. It's exactly the same kind of feeling as the one I get when I eat ice cream that has those crackling/crispy things in them.
Once I read your comment I felt the exact same thing while listening.... and when I hit pause it goes away
Mason Shepherd it's WEIRD isn't it? How does it work?!?!?!
joeytje50 I'm gonna say it's a psychosomatic thing
Skip to 1:18 for the song.
John, I have so much more appreciation for your dedication to signing after spending forty minutes highlighting bits of a pile of papers at my library yesterday. All I could think was, "I can't imagine doing this for 12 hours a day." You are an inspiration to us all :)
I really like watching you sign. It's calming.
Don't care about the talky bits, so I just skipped past the first third.
Pro tip from a native Montrealer: We say it Mun-treal, not Mont-real ;)
i convinced my brother-in-law to buy me a preorder copy IM SO VERY VERY HAPPY i cant even explain how happy it makes me to know i will get one of your books signed. i almost didnt get it cause of my mom. so happy :3 i love you john. your books change my life
There's something really hypnotic and soothing about watching you sign all those pages.
I found the combination of John signing his name repeatedly and the beautiful music in the background incredibly relaxing
this is just two minutes of John signing books and a catch song and I love it!
The song with the repetitive motion of pages being signed was very therapeutic.....I feel so mellow now. Thank you John & Permafrost!
I can't explain why, but watching John sign these pages with this music playing is oddly calming. I feel very happy right now.
I thought about skipping the last part but there is something hypnotizing about watching John sign his name with a beautiful background song....
Thanks for doing this John! You are (obviously) Awesome! Please do this with your next novel!
This is one of my favorites for some reason.
I think it was so nice of John to sign so many copies of the book, he shows that he really loves nerdfighters!
This is the most calming John video I've ever seen.
What an amazing song. So peaceful...
Someone needs to make a 10 hours loop of just the music + signing. It's oddly hypnotic.
Ordered! So excited for January!
This is the video that introduced me to "Fireflies of Montreal": I'm really glad John used it, because it is an incredibly beautiful song.
OMG!
I’ve never seen this video before and the opening gave me the 1st real laugh of the day!
I feel like this would be a great way to fall asleep. In a good way! So soothing.
My therapist told me last week when I am stressed to draw. Your eyes will follow the pen and you will be using the left side of your brain, causing the right side to slow down. Taking a 5 minute break from my hectic life to watch a Vlogbrothers video is calming, plus watching you sign TFIOS and crazy good music seriously relaxed me :)
it is so calming down... keep calm and watch John sign 1948482&25 TFIOS books
I'm very glad that you left that last people in :D I really enjoyed listening to that song, it gave me goosebumps. I like seeing the community supporting people like this :D
Love her voice! Love you too John!
Why did I find the part watching you sign while listening to her sing so relaxing? DFTBA to you!
Wow, watching you sign while listening to Laurena felt more calming than it probably should be. Although, thoughts of wondering your masterfully avoid paper cuts interrupted my brain from vacationing to SleepLand.
This is really soothing and hypnotic in a way... *contented sigh*
1) John, you should really go for a world record with this!
2) I think I've seen you sign your name so many times that I could definitely replicate it myself.
3) That was my favorite outro :D
That song is so beautiful
Thank you very much for signing my copy, John.
I love her music. agh. so chill.
Watching you sign those books to that song was strangely beautiful and peaceful.
And then you were insane.
Thanks for signing so much. I have now perfected the forgery of your signature.
This song is BEAUTIFUL
:58 Cheat reference!!! Bringing it back old school, like a boss. Love it!
hey John, thanks for mentioning Laurena and her EP, as I was born & raised in Montreal and am happy to discover awesome local music! :) So thank you and ps you should visit our fine city one day, I know you'd love it :)
i find this somehow entertaining. i could watch this all day.
wowza the tfios thermometre shot up! awesome john!
the way you sign your name intrigues me... it's so perfect
this is mesmerizing
Your book comes out on my birthday! Must say it's still at the top of my reasons-why-im-looking-forward-to-my-birthday list :)
it is sooo relaxing to listen to that song and watch u sign :)
I'm glad you left it in.
I see your signature has gotten more consistent in it's shape. Congratulations!
i love your recreation of a slow motion event.

That song made me cry for some reason.
permafrost is my most played song both on spotify and itunes
That was so calming...
This song is AMAZING
The Random Generator brought me here and I am not complaining one bit xD Love you both, Green brothers
Watching John sign and listening to that song is quite therapeutic
Watching John's signing is quite therapeutic.
It is SO nice to see that you really care about nerfighters, few people would spend their time on that, you are really made of awesome.
John, this is beautiful.
In between the informative beginning and the exciting end, this video was full of relaxing, sleepy lovliness :)
It is really very relaxing!
Most relaxing video ever.
this was so hypnotic
This is kind of random, but I feel like I had to share: This week, I started reading Paper Towns for the first time. As an Orlando resident for the past several years, I had never seen or heard of "the asparagus" before... after reading that section of the book, I promptly looked it up and decided I MUST see this at some point soon... well today, Occupy Orlando marched/protested through downtown Orlando - go figure we would walk right past it. Thank you for giving me that moment
I thoroughly enjoy your signature.
Nerdfighterlike story! My guy friend & I had been sitting around, discussing things we loved and things about ourselves. I finally told him I memorized the last words of POTUS. He then asked if I'd ever heard of Looking For Alaska. I then told him I was a nerdfighter & loved John's books, at which point I jokingly said we should get married. He then confessed to having a crush on me, and now he & I are in a wonderful, intellectual relationship. Thanks John & Hank, DFTBA
Dear vlogbrothers,
I think this goes without saying, but you two make my life (and I'm sure many others lives) so much better! Thank you~!
I'm so excite.
I just realized that this year, in fact this tuesday, is the 5 year anniversary of The Fault In Our Stars
The last few minutes are so calming
(1:18)
The graceful swoop of the j-scribble never fails to astound me.
Watching you sign is mesmerizing... :)
oh my google this song is amazingly beautiful, and i'm happy that john is doing so well on signing., and this was arguably the best video ever. i love pumpkin juice (lol, the people that follow the wadsworth constant don't know what i'm talking about, yay,)
