Simon and Gemma, I am a Naval Architect of steel ships and I have been watching your series from the start with interest. I haven't commented on anything so far as there is nothing I have found amiss (other than floors connecting to the keel, but you have rectified that). However, I am concerned about the state of your ballast in bags and the apparent randomness of the weight of each bag and its distribution in the boat. Ballast is required for three reasons: 1) to change centre of gravity (transversely, longitudinally, and vertically) and thus potentially improve the stability of the boat; 2) to make the boat sit at its design draught; and 3) to correct any bow or stern trim or heel, ie so that it is on a level waterine both longitudinally and transversely. Determining the amount of ballast depends upon the hull shape of the boat, the distibution of weight along the boat (ie weight of engines, etc), the longitudinal structural strength of the boat, and the position of the centre of gravity without ballast. Please do not put the ballast back permanently, you need a plan first. On the warships I designed any ballast we used was in the form of a rectangular blocks (each about the size of a brick and easy to handle) and encapsulated in plastic to avoid any corrosion or leaching of metals into the bilge water. I urge you to find a tame qualified Naval Architect locally to you to advise you not only on the requirements of ballast but in all matters relating to strength and stability. Keep up the good work, you are going in the right direction. ps: one more thing, are you going to take the exhaust/fenders off to check the condition of the hull behind?
All of us in the US join with you in mourning the passing of Queen Elizabeth. Sh was a great sovereign, leader and she embodied the UK for so many years. She will be missed by people all over the world. God save the King.
I was reading about you guys on line last night… you own and run a van/camper conversion company full time, are raising two children AND doing this restoration as well!?!?!? I have ONE word; RESPECT. How do you do all that and still remain so likable?
Think the word is ‘neglect’……….poor Simon. All he wanted was wine, women and a boat, I mean where’s the wine? 🤔🤭
Great Video As Always.... God Rest Our Queen, I hope she is back in Prince Phillips arms & they are as one again.
❤
Thanks Gem. pleasure to be here. Simons a power sailor. fluffy white things. You have the facilities Gem, put'm to work even a stove top stew. Simon, leave the gumboots off, you might need'm later workin in the mud. Nice goin m8s, stay vertical Eh!
Really looking good down there in the nether regions of a good old boat. Tough dirty work that almost never gets seen. It's also great that you seem to be generating enough $ to use the best materials. Proud of you guys for getting this far. It's like Simons shirt now, no quitting. Even though I couldn't read the bottom of that shirt and might have missed the punch line. Bilge looks fabulous for an old war hero.
It was something to the effect of: I'm never going to quit but there will be a fair amount of whining. That was the jest anyways.
She would be happy to you two pair doing your duty to save and protect this boat . That had a place in history when Her Majesty was in uniform . .Carry on .You are doing a fine job.
“It’s not long enough - That’s what she said” I was literally 🤣
Just a thought - assuming the ballast is lead like every other boat, why not take a card template exactly like you did with the steel floor frames. And make a form to remedy the lead into an easily to handle shape that fits the boat a lot better? Plus then you can also put in an eyelet bolt (or whatever y’all call them) so that you can lift them in and out a whole lot easier in the future. It’ll come in handy in the future when you are trimming the ballast for weight balance after you’ve finished nearly all the work on the rest of the layout.
Gemma & Simon .. Sarinda is looking sharper in everyway , and young Patrick giving you a hand , he's a good Lad , getting down and dirty will always bring a smile to our faces when a good days work is done.
Thanks for keeping me entertained, great job.
Great piece of work well done
Great to see so much enthusiasm from you both and everyone who lends a hand. Even better is how keen young Patrick is to get stuck in. Life skills and practical skills he can learn and carry with him for the rest of his days. We are just the current custodians of old boats like this, kids like that young man are the future for them ❤️
“It’s got a white floppy thing”. I love that Simon!
Sorry to hear about your queen...
I think the world will miss her greatly.
Great to see that young man, helping you out. What a star, he’ll go far.
Patrick is great x
@@ShipHappensUK he was talking about Simon!

Great job guys!
What a smashing couple, love how you work so well together, keep up the good work you a real inspiration.
Hello and I was so sorry to hear of the Queens passing I sure all there in England is feeling her loss .
I got to say your video editing is getting extremely good 👍 you will be able to get a job on blockbuster films by the end of your refitting of this fantastic boat 👍😊
Thanks Steven, always learning and improving! Xx
Nice work. Very polished. Sorry to hear about the Queen.
Love this channel~ so entertaining ~ well done as usual
Hi Gemma and Simon, it has been very entertaining watching you and your project progress, don't loose heart because of a few trolls, I wish I was a few years younger and start a project like that, but not in the cards! Cheers!
Kerry
Two of you work really hard. You make a good team.
Things are getting rough in England, energy prices and all. I wish the best for your family, and hope it won't stop you from finishing the boat.
Only Death will stop us!!!
The British are at their best when the going gets tough.🇬🇧👍
Looks amazing Gemma and Simon! Soon it's on to the transom and rear birthing
Simon, for your next "WhyTF is it that way video", do one on WhyTF is an engine bearer doing all the way out there, away from the engine!
Looking really good guys, I always enjoy catching up on your doings.
Hats of to you two you are doing a great job don't know how you do it ? I do the hard work, but doing that and filming everything ! don't know how you manage that . BRILLIANT channel.
Its really nice to see you happy with the progress you have made!
Your Right Simon It Has Been A Long Time Coming! Its sure has but take a moment to sit back and take a gander at what you both have done thus far. The front of that boat is looking fantastic and even the outside of the Haul looks incredible and that new roof think about man you've both and your pals have done an amazing amount of work and its starting to show and its looks amazing. When this boat is finished your gonna have a wonderful world war 2 shipping yacht that you will be able to enjoy for the rest of your lives ...I'm green with envy if I didn't have an injured back I'd be doing the exact same thing as you too or something very similar. So sit back my friend and enjoy your journey Simon you will one day look back at these days and wish you could once again do them. I know I sound a bit nuts but its true. bud. its true,...
Love the vid very informative. Keith

And what their doing is saving a large bit of history.pls tell your friends hell tell your enemies.forget 8 k lets get them up over 100 k they deserve it more then most.the govs not giving them any money.all you Americans out here.you know the greatest lady of our times just past away r.i.p. You know you want to do something but what?lets support our little part of England right here either tell 10 friends or send $10 or do 5 n 5. The price of a lunch show the can do spirt.
Please please guys take extra precautions when working with molten tar.
Guard against burns and fire .
Tar burns are horrible and fire from molten tar is easy once it reaches its flash point.
Stay safe 🚑
Sailing Yaba have created ballast tubes from gutter pipes, filled with metal shavings from a metalworker shop. They can lay and pack varying sizes and lengths of tube depending on the shape available. The tubes are capped so a very clean install and removal if necessary. Makes a lot of sense..
Yes if the shavings don't rust and expand . so why change what's worked for so many years?
Lead could be cast into sheet metal gutter pipes. Heavier than steel outings and no corrosion worries. Lead cast into bespoke bricks is better but don't go too big it's heavy stuff.
@@richardford4570 all soaked in oil before sealing
Looking great you guys, crack on! 😁🤘🏻🤘🏻🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉👍👍
Airplanes do not use tar, but materials called leveling compounds. They are used to fill low spots providing positive drainage of fluids.
Super work!! You fokes are saving a part of history.
The engine bearers in Sarinda were not part of the original design. The early boats suffered from excessive flexing at speed and they realized that they needed stiffening longitudinally.
I subscribe to 12 boat channels and yours is by far my favorite. I hope your channel grows greatly.
My name is Zohar. I am from Israel. I just finished watching al the episodes of Ship Happens. After you finish your project, I invite you to visit Israel with your yacht.
Great video thank for sharing keep up the great work both 👍
You guys astound me with your work ethic.
I'm thinking if you want to push the numbers up a bit ,maybe you both do a mud lark .lol
Nice to see the update. Sarinda is looking better with each episode 😀. Also, watching your series helps to forget a bit about my boat problems as well 😁
Well I guess I should have said around the world is feeling her loss she touched so many all over the world may she rest in peace
She will be missed x
Amazing. Well done.
To have the whole bow section done will be quite the accomplishment!
It's starting to look alot better down there now!
Don't know if you're interested but if you really want to see how the old wooden boat was built watch this channel, they have got craftsman redoing this boat and my God back in them days they did not measure the bolts to be the same across or any of that what you need to do is just watch this channel and they will teach you so much Sailing Yabá And please don't get me wrong you guys are doing an excellent job, these are real craftsmen and boatbuilders in a boat yard. I think it may just end up being one of your favorite channels after you see what they do
hey, just wondering if you guys are keeping the current Ballast or if you are changing? found you guys the other day and have binge watched all your episodes. A monumental task and it's looking great well done 😁👌 Love from 🇦🇺
Wahoo!
Looking Good 👍 👌
Ger an old cast iron killer or large t pot with a spout . Easy way to pour tar
Are the engine bearers offset due to propeller rotation? I think some ships are built with the prop shaft offset port / starboard to counter the rotation of the prop.
It’s not long enough! That’s what she said! 😀
Looks great 👍 top work guys 👍👍
Thanks
Thank you so much for your support Leslie xx
Awesome job
Lovely video as usual
Great work you make a good team
I love to watch your channel it has great content! Of course I think one of your paddles is not hitting the water😂😂😂! Oh, seriously terribly sorry over the loss of your Queen she seems to have led an exemplary life and was perhaps the last of the rough and tumble generation that saved your country from a madman (Hitler). Rest In Peace God save the King! And all of that. Very sincerely.
10:58 Have you heard of the name they used to give sailors? Jolly Jack Tar. They were called this because of the method used to restrain their long hair whilst at sea. They would tie up their long hair into a pony tail and then fold it up behind similar to the way a woman does today and then they would take the added measure of preventing it from coming undone by dipping it in tar. Rather than shave all the hair off and run the risk of sun burn.
The steel brackets look like they'll increase the strength a lot, but you have to wonder how they'll fair being exposed to the bilge salt water long term?
I suppose hot dip galvanizing would have been too expensive?
When you talk about bilge. I hope you put a large capacity bilge pump that is run off the engine drive. Those electric pumps can't keep up to a damaged hull.
u guys will know that boat as well as the original builders well done
Tar Baby go!!!
Excellent work on that floor. Do you grind off the mill scale to bare steel? Hot zinc metal spray for corrosion protection would be good.
Have a nice weekend.. Best regaeds from Norway
More progress 👍🏻 she’s looking new
Great work guys, but you really need a pneumatic chisel for that tar, I wish I could send you one but I couldn't afford the postage let alone the tool, hope someone in your area can help maybe, All the very best to you, Al
Of set to allow for the turning props and you will find she turns better one way at high speed than the other "the high speed is relative "
Looking good
Well done you Two
Fine job thanks
It was kind of disturbing hearing that hot tar bubble on a wooden boat, it’s been done for centuries though, nice work you two!
I hope you Don't go blocking your limber holes up with too much tar. It's easily done. I made that mistake on an old fishing boat 20 odd years ago. I Had to get another bilge pump as I couldn't remove enough of the tar lol
I HOPE U GET TO 80K WAY BEFORE WINTER HITS BUD , OR I HATE TO SAY IT SPRING TIME , MIGHT LOOSE YOUR WOBBLIES IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER, I AM NOT YELLING JUST SEEING BETTER, SORRY CAPPS, GOD BLESS ALL BE SAFE , AND STAY WARM LOL
"Paint Your Bilge"... You must have been subconsciously messing with me! I just spend 8 weeks on the hard de-rusting and painting all my bilges of my 41 ft steel ketch. Just finishing the engine room this week and splash next Friday.
Just started following you's about a month ago do you have any plans to lift your boat onto the dry, keep up the great work as you are restoring a piece of history
Hello from Siesta Key Florida
Hello Bill 👋
sorry for the loss of the queen, Long live the king!
I was waiting for the blowlamp to set fire to the old tar! 🙂
Kind of a odd point, are you keeping track of extra Weight your adding or subtracting to boat? Once upon a time I'm sure they had an exact amount of ballast to keep it alligned back in the 30s . But she is now nothing like she was then.is there a way to have that rechecked when done? Recalibrated? I'm odd that way.
good vid thanks lee
Thanks Lee x
The pair of you are certainly very hard workers, however please don't take shortcuts when using a pillar Drill, always clamp the piece down especially when using a larger drill to countersink holes otherwise you could do your fingers a lot of damage if the drill suddenly bites. Keep up the good work.
Long live the king
We should call you the bilge Queen...
Can you describe a bit more about what the “engine bearers” are? Do they run all the way back to the main engines? Or did the have some other mechanical device on them before?
So what is that new bracket supposed to do? It does not look like it would strengthen the opening, because it has nothing at the top across it, to keep the top apart.
Well that would be nice , but how bout a good stew or porridge! 😋
I know you don't eat out of that pot, But I know in India, they smelt led in it, They clean the pot out and then heat their food from it.
I don't think Simon needs to buy you a new pot. Just think of the tar in the pot as a "Teflon coating." There, problem solved.
You're welcome
Bob
🤣
Lekker man lekker 🇿🇦
The sizzling sound is water boiling out.
Question: How precise do you need to be on your ballast? The reason I ask is that I noticed when you were building the floor, you were using a good amount of steel. Seems like that should be counted as some of your ballast weight.
Comment: Also, not sure if you follow Sailing Yuba or not, but they did a very clever thing with their ballast that I can't understand why everyone isn't doing. Thier boat is about the same size as yours give or take.
I'm guessing because Yabas a sailing yacht/boat, she'd need a lot more ballast. Just a thought!
Yes she does. But my comment was more on the way they are deploying it. Their method gets the weight as close to the keel as possible while also taking up far less space than bags of lead.
Painting their nails? - Yes
But
Painting their bilges? - Not too sure about that
12/09/2022 Hello ship. This old girl's bottom likes the tar. This will keep her bilge dry. Sorta like wearing dry socks. It is good to see the young man working today. He really likes to work. That will make hin a great man like simon. You lucky boat! I like the new steel bracing both hign and low. Sometimes old girls need a little help on the bottom! If you listen real hard and be quiet yourself, at high tide when she is floating, you may hear her squeaks and popping as she recovers and stretches her old bones, and wood work into a snug fit. It is like putting on panty hose. A little pull here and a little tug there then letting the breath back in. She is breathing new air and life back into the troubled soul of her. Did you know that she knew that she knew she was becoming destroyed by time and weather. I have mentioned her soul. The men who served onboard all have passes on leaving within her the souls and memories of these things? Great proud lady as should be. She will perform for you guys much more forgiving toslight mistakes running her. Last thought, you should buy the young man a great ocean rod and real to catch the fish for dinner. Feed him well. Hamburgers and fries and a milk shake will do for now, later steak and eggs. Great boat, great job. Good luck and stay safe 3 months ago. Don usa
A Februari mud bath eh? Anyway, good work for this week! 😀
@10:00 gemma, i think that lovely pony tail needs cutting :-( @13:30 take patrick with you as you ships boy. he'll eventually make captain :-)
Thanks Gemma, can we have more crap tips of the day please
Just for you I will do more!!! Xx
Great work as always guys !!
When Simon reminded everyone about his mud challenge.... didn't YOU say that " YOU WOULD DO THE SAME AT 1000 SUBS ?"
I HOPE you didn't forget ... I DIDN'T !!
EVIL CHUCKLE 👹 X
Too late now, but I don't get the tar in the bilges. 2 reasons it's flammable and will probably have oil on top of it? And it could reshape and have voids where you don't want them.
Pls Consider a marine mastic for future work
05:32 - If you think about it, all the glue really does here is glue the grey paint to the black paint - not glue the wood to the steel. So... probably best not to think about it. lol
