  • We adopted our beautiful son, Deaven, from South Korea almost 3 months ago. This video provides an update on him and our family - which includes sleep struggles and signs of post adoption grieving.
We hope our story not only encourages other loving families to adopt (whether international or domestic) but also help them through the process as well.

We adopted in 1988 and 1990 from Korea. I’d read they stopped doing adoptions here. Glad you were able to.

That is amazing! You are correct, Korea is slowly stopping adoption due to low birth rates. We were one of the last groups I believe. Thank you for sharing and would love to know more about you :)

He is soo darling. Prayers that he continues to do well…. We’ve seen two kiddos come home recently that have had scary outcomes… Devon looks so lovable….

What wonderful people, beautiful at heart, you are. Taking responsibility for raising a child is a big thing. Giving love to a child who lacks the warmth of a home is wonderful. Be blessed! Greetings from Germany.

So great to see a new video from you guys and to get an update on your family and sweet Deaven! I wanted to share in regards to the grieving- of course it's different for every child and we have adopted two of our children and even they grieved differently. But one thing they both had in common (and it is ongoing today) is that when they would become ill which is hard on any child they would regress. This would show up in being more needy, clingy, crying easily, even needing the presence of mommy, daddy and siblings just 'more' than lets say our bio child who was securely attached. My suggestion is to try as best as you can and I know it's hard with three kiddos! But just try as best as you can to meet those needs in however Deaven shows you that he is needing. For our older daughter when she was sick she loved increased attention, special meals, lots of hugs (more than she needed or even wanted when she was well) and alot of reassurance that she was loved. Our younger daughter turned inward more and become clingy and seemed to check out. So for her I would co-sleep with her during naptime, carry her as much as possible and just meet that need. Now our daughters are young adults and they can communicate with me that they do feel insecure and grief and feelings of being overwhelmed often arise when they get sick or even if I become ill. You guys are great parents and the sleep deprivation is definitely real! Make time for each other and keep your great sense of humor- in the end what you can laugh about you can survive!

This is really great advice Faith! Deaven showed very similar signs you had mentioned and I 100% agree to meet all those needs. Not covered in video but our girls did get experience a lot of jealous because they saw us providing Deaven a lot more (needed) attention. Did your oldest ever experience any jealousy during those times? Thank you again for sharing so helpful ❤

@@DBWorld_UA-cam He didn't 'show' it when we adopted our first daughter who was closer to his age and they became fast friends but I think looking back he definitely experienced some jealousy. Most of the challenges he had with his sister were due to her crossing boundaries because she had huge attachment challenges. He was 9 years old when we adopted our youngest and he came with us to adopt her and I guess the age difference made things so much easier. I homeschooled our kiddos so I had to make sure to plan special things with our son and also when he had time with his friends over to set boundaries with his younger sisters so they didn't trample all over his time with his friends. They are all adults now and get along well. He is very loving and plans special time with his sisters. If I could go back and change anything I would not have expected him to 'understand' the trauma and changes and issues that an adopted child faces. I would have planned weekly dates with him and left the girls home with daddy for a few hours. He needed that but I just didn't see it at the time because I was overwhelmed and so busy. I hope this helps!

I am wanting to adopt a baby from South Korea in the future... What adoption agency did you use and how much all in all did it cost? Btw, beautiful family! ❤

Love to see your happy family! I do have a question! I have checked since 2020 to adopt on Korea but they have not been accepting new applicants. So im boggled how you were able to?? They recently allowed a few families adopt special needs though. Thank you❤

Hi!! Thank you and great question! Deaven was a "waiting child" - child who has some medical needs as an infant/toddler. There were a few babies that were "in-waiting" due to medical concerns/history. I believe they will accept applicants now unless open to waiting children. However, even waiting children now are a few as I have heard. I hope it all works out.
