  • Some thoughts about how BTBAM organizes their endless gnarly riffs. Basically, modularity, cyclicality, and expanding return.
For a more in-depth look at these concepts and the rest of the album, check out my masters thesis:

And for some similar ideas in Dream Theater:

I know right I love them Btbam and I would probly crap myself if he did a breakdown on Cygnus... vismund Cygnus 4:17 on. That part screwed with me for a really long time.

Parallax II was my first metal album as well! It's so dense, with so many sections and parts each with tasty riffs!
Thanks so much for giving this attention! :)

Dude, you're amazing! I've been playing for a decade and I'm only just now figuring out arpeggios and triads and how the neck and chords and scales and everything is all connected lol. I've been trying to figure out where to go from here and I feel like this is gonna be a huge help seeing how they come up with this stuff.

In future videos, when you put the notation and tabs up, would it be possible to add in what chords the riff is hinting at?

I've also been into BTBAM since Colors and struggled to wrap my ahead around their approach to writing. This really helped me start to understand their structure better and even take a couple of organizational ideas that I can apply to my own writing. Thanks for this deep dive!

because of you I started listening to The Mars Volta and Gorguts. And re-listening much of BTBAM. As well as getting to know Carbomb better. They confused me too hard when I first saw them unprepared ^^

@@metalmusictheory5401 My every hope and wish for the success of your channel. I just binged all your videos and love your creativity.
I've commented a few times, I would love to see an analysis for the first 2 minutes of Sun of Nothing. There are some really interesting false cadence things going on, and odd seeming resolutions that ultimate distract from the true resolution just before the first acoustic section.
Also, I have been dying to analyze ion dissonance's first album myself, but I never really learned to apply what I learned in school to modern metal as you have so skillfully done.
I'd love to see some "method" videos that discuss how to analyze and transcribe with all the noise and alternate tunings and whatnot so I might try my hand at analyzing some of my favorite music too!
Good luck, and I'm looking forward to watching your channel grow!

@@metalmusictheory5401 The intro to Astral Body seems like a ripe source for more on your auditory parallax analysis. How the lead riff of Paul sets the expectation of time signature, but then the rest of the band joins in with a very eastern sounding rhythmic structure, and the lead voice never seems to properly coincide with the rest of the band until the melodic resolution. It's bonkers! I'd love to hear your analytical take on that too.

@@nanthilrodriguez Thank you so much! Will def do a lot more about BTBAM, and I think Sun of Nothing was the first of their songs I learned to play front to back. And I've actually been thinking about doing a transcription method video! Currently transcribing some more Car Bomb and I think it would be interesting to at least some people to see what that process actually looks like.

@@metalmusictheory5401 Sun of Nothing taught me to play guitar. Before that I was sing-strumming and playing pop-punk and radio rock stuff, and then I bought the colors sound book and that's when my journey on the guitar actually started. It took me a solid 2 or 3 years to learn it front to back, but it introduced me to so many new techniques and ideas on the guitar I never even knew were possible. And that opening riff is just... *italian fingers* juicy
