3D artist with over a decade of experience here. This was my first time using Substance painter and that tutorial of yours was just great and very informative to me! My hour was very well spent. Thank you so much!
Highly beginner-friendly and recommended. All this glorious information explained in a highly detailed manner is just mind-boggling, never picked up something so quickly, the explanation is soooo to the point and impeccable, omg ! This deserves at least 5M views. You sir have done a phenomenal job.
I have been trying to gain a grasp of the SP program for days and have watched multiple tutorials. That said, yours is the only one that has given me the slightest understanding of it. Thank you so much for the common-sense / plain language tutorial. Far too often gurus know what they're talking about so their tuts tend to overlook simple things and include technical specifics that beginners do not comprehend. You didn't do that. You explained things on a base level that made it easier to grasp. My highest compliments and appreciation! Please make more tuts!
To be honest I have watched a lot of sp tutorials here before yours, I got to say that you have the most easy understand and practical tutorial I have ever watched!!! Lot of those people just keep using those terminologies and complicated theories to explain a simple step in a beginner tutorials...I got even more confused after watching them. I followed your tutorial with my own model and I got an incredible result after first try! This is the first time I feel like I can do 3d texture as well! Thank you Mussi! You are the best and you are a good teacher!! I just subscribed your channel right away!!!
Hey, just wanted to say, I really like that you just dove right into it. I'm liking the first 5 minutes of this video more than the whole hour I spent watching another one from some bougie-looking channel that was trying to sell their tutorial packages from the get-go.
i installed substance just yesterday, and i spent few days watching tutos, honestely the best tuto i found for now, simple and easy to get started not complecated with so much informations, i hope you do more tutos about substance thank you a lot
Great job, I paid for tutorials in the past, and this was faster and easier to follow. Thank you for saving my time and getting to the point at a fast pace.
I know you uploaded this a while ago but I wanted to thank you very much for taking the time to share your knowledge with others. This was very useful, easy to understand, clear and practical, so I really appreciate it! I hope you keep growing, you deserve it!
Man, you're the man. I was watching another substance painter tutorial and they were selling the rest of the tutorial for $39, and it was just BAD, too much blablabla, then I came here, you go straight to the point and the learn curve is enormous. I made the soda can taught by you last week and I can say I already feel pretty good with Maya, now the same with substance painter. Thank you JL!!
Thank you so much for this video! I have been "over-modeling" in ZBrush to make up for my lack of expertise in texturing. I have good PhotoShop skills but my models never looks as good as those with real PBR materials. I've been struggling to figure out Substance Painter off and on for over a year and keep giving up on it. Your's is the first video that layed it out in a way I could understand. My brain was just clicking every few minutes watching this - finally I get it! Thank you for being real and not just trying to show everyone how smart you are.
Just getting into this lately and also found it very helpful. I really appreciated the beginning where you went over how each channel affects the maps/ model - that breakdown helped me grasp a few concepts better from an overall perspective. I also watched the 5 part series from Substance with the orange robot but that’s a very specific solution and there’s a lot more general knowledge that was skipped. Thanks a lot.
Model prep, id map use, explanation of materials vs. smart materials, masking, generators, normal map and alpha use in conjunction. Bro I'm going to be watching this one a few times over! Excellent tutorial man! Already shared this with all my friends
For anyone who can't get the edge wear to affect the normal map make sure you don't delete the hi res mesh in the 'High definition meshes' panel and also click on curvature in the mesh maps list and select generate from normal map.
I have been messing around with substance painter for a few years but never found a tutorial that really broke it down and showed me exactly how to use the tools i needed most for what i was doing with my 3d modeling. This video actually allwed me to take the time and understand exactly what it was that i needed to do to get my textures from noob to pro. Thank you very much for such a simple and easy to understand tutorial :)
I've watched a few Substance tutorials and this is by far the best. Others miss steps because they don't know how to teach people who don't know what they know.
I've always had the opposite problem of trying to texture harder to make up the lack of details in my models. Your channel is great on all fronts, keep it up!
Thanks man really appreciate it. I used before 3/4 years back and forgot to use because no use in other next companies so here I came as beginner again and saw your video tutorial and just restart my mind again and really easy to understand the way you explained really thank you for your help and support towards every artist and thanks for sharing your knowledge too. Best wishes for your upcoming projects and tutorials stay blessed always brother. Love from India. 👍❤️🙏😃
i am a blender guy just got substance painter..and starting this tutorial..watched first 2 minutes of that Thanos comparision...Subscribed...maybe your not a substance master yet..But you can be my Sensei
Dude thanks for this....... Wooow I like how you've really explained it. At first I was advised to read the substance painter pbr guide. Thinking that by reading it, I will be able to start my journey.... Boooy was I wrong. All those guys were teaching is physics 😆 That's when you came up and taught me the real Substance painter.... Thanks bro...can't wait for more content like this
This is probably the best tutorial I've seen anywhere for anything. To the point not getting clogged up into the intricate details that start to become overwhelming for beginners and just straight up getting to the goods to provide a good base, which not only has the benefit of showing a small glimpse at what the application in question is capable of, but also leads to excitement/curiosity to learn more since it is showing so much promise already in just the beginners video.
Thanks for this! Tried a couple of other so-called 'beginner' substance tuts before this and ended up being confused/overwhelmed. This however was clear, simple, informative and highly recommendable for substance noobs!
Hi, new sub here. I bought substance painter on steam summer sale but didn't really got to use it until last weekend... navigating was really not an issue having used many sw that deal with 3D (mostly Blender and Maya, but I also include game engines such as Unity and Unreal as there are many similarities) it was pretty straight forward... but the photoshop part of substance did confuse me a lot... I fooled around with materials a bit but got really uncanny results, so I decided to look for tutorials online (spoiler alert: I found very few and some of them were either very specific, high level or just plain boring...) and that's when I got to this channel. the video length didn't felt like that (it felt shorter), in fact you kept my attention 100% of the time and I even went back many times just to make sure I was following correctly, so to me this video totally nailed it + did got me started in substance, so I really want to thank you for this awesome video!
Very good! Now there is the anchor point, so no need to export normal map to reimport and bake everything again to get the influence of bump/normal stamps into the generators.
Fantastic tut. Things were explained very well, you didn't skip steps, and you didn't dive too deep given the target experience level of the video. Thanks!!
I have been using Painter for about 6 months, and already learned something new. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to getting into some of the more advanced concepts.
Great video! A little tip if you’re trying to get the camera straight when you do stamps is that you can snap to different orthographical views with Ctrl + Left Click + Shift
Wow man you really got all the important stuff included to get started, really heps me a lot, also to not feel overwhelmed with another interface. thank you for a free, high quality lesson!
For those who can't get the edge wear to affect the normal map make sure that you delete all other maps from texture set setting/mesh maps and leave only normal map, then after clicking "bake mesh maps" under curvature select Method: generate from Normal map.
I've watched many if your videos and they have honestly helped me elevate my skills. Thanks to this video I have a better understanding of substance. I've used maya for over 10 years and texturing and UV's were always my Achilles heel. I made an imperial version of the bb-8 droid from the new star wars movies and textured it in substance I watched this video and made some adjustments. It came out much better.
Great first impression. even if you are a little bit more advanced. some steps were good to know like the rerendering of the normal map and rebake it which never crossed my mind
I'm 53 seconds in and paused to add a comment. You mentioned an "unhealthy" relationship with 3d modelling because you wanted to avoid texturing. I know EXACTLY your thought process there. So thanks for nailing it right up front. I'll resume the video now! :D

Great tutorial for industry people who just wanna dive in. We already know what alphas are just need to know how to use them! You're great inspiration for generalists who don't need to know every detail of a single program, but instead like dipping between a variety of packages. Keep it up.
Finding this tutorial and your channel was extremely helpful! Currently working on assets for a game I'm making and understanding substance painter better now because of this video is such a huge help! Thanks!
Thank you so much for the tutorial, and for the guides on how to properly create masks without having to always use the smart materials! That was very helpful. The most valuable information I've gotten from this tutorial was the export of the normal maps, then Rebaking the existing maps after importing the export normal maps with height information from the alphas, So that the details/decals would work as they should with the rest of the maps like ambient occlusion and curvature!
